Chapter 17: sixteen

On Thursday I sat into my math class, taking out my notebook and starting to sketch little leaves on the side as usual. Ella still hadn't come in, making me think that maybe she wouldn't have come to school at all that day. I wondered why was she skipping so many days, it was unlikely of her.

I was that caught up in my thoughts that I didn't notice the chair next to me had been moved. I looked up all of sudden when I recognised the smell of a cologne, that at that point was almost soaking the walls of my studio at home.

I gave Harry a weird look before nonchalantly looking at the desk he usually sat on. Niall wasn't there. I turned to look at Harry again, feeling like asking him why he was sitting next to me.

He gave me a side-glance before ignoring me, as if he hadn't done something weird at all.

"Are you gonna say nothing about this as well?" I asked him after a while.

"You said you don't want to have sex with me" he said, earning an even more confused look from me.

"I'm not sure where this conversation is going at this point" I mumbled, giving up and looking away.

"She does."

I looked at him again. "What?" I asked.

He gave me no reply, but he pointedly looked in the direction of his desk. I followed his look, discovering that a blonde haired girl had sat on Niall's chair. I'd never noticed Janette was in my same maths class. But she looked like the kind of person that would've sat at the very back of the class, so I wasn't that much surprised at all.

"Running away from your girlfriend, are you?" I muttered, resorting to drawing the leaves on my notebook, my senses heightened by Harry's closeness. We'd never been that close to each other for a prolonged period of time, and I found it hard to concentrate on anything else that wasn't him.

The teacher started his lesson and I tried my best to take notes, ignoring Harry's presence next to me. I automatically glanced at the desk where he usually sat, its emptiness reminding where he currently was. I went back to trying to pay attention, just to be distracted again by the sound of paper being ripped next to me. I subtly looked at what he was doing, not turning my head not to attract his attention.

His fingers crumbled up a paper sheet, not fast enough for me not to see that words were written on there - not numbers. He pushed the small ball on the corner of the desk farther away from me slowly. He took the pen and went back to writing. It didn't take me long to realise that he definitely wasn't taking notes. He was writing something else. All of sudden he turned the page and looked at the front of the class. Had he noticed that I was looking at him, maybe? I wondered what he was doing. I'd never seen him quite as restless before. I openly looked at him, but he ignored me completely.

"What are you doing?" I asked quietly, intrigued by his actions.

He barely glanced at me, but gave no reply.

"Aren't you gonna answer?" I pushed when I realised he had every intention of pretending I hadn't opened my mouth at all.

"It's not relevant anyway" he hissed back, his sudden hostile tone letting me know he had no intention of answering.

"If I didn't care about the answer I wouldn't have asked" I muttered and quietly resumed my business, sneaking quick glances in his direction every once in a while.

He tapped against the surface of the desk, staring at the opposite side of the class, apparently not paying attention to the lesson. As soon as the class ended he fled out of the room.

I watched as Janette made her way out of the room soon after.

I sighed, gathering my books and exiting as well. It didn't matter how hard I tried, it just seemed like I couldn't understand him at all.

"Sierra! Wait!"

I turned my head as soon as I heard my name being called, seeing Aiden walk towards me.

"The last drawing was great!" He said. "I would've told you last week, but I totally forgot. You draw people so well, literally."

"Thank you" I said. "Just a lot of exercise, honestly" I added, trying to lessen the compliment.

"Nah, that's more like, pure talent."

"Thanks" I replied awkwardly, not really understanding why he kept complimenting my drawing skills.

"Anyway, I'm glad you decided to drop Harry for a while to hang out together" Aiden said, and I gave him a weird look.

"I guess." I replied quietly, looking around to find a reason to leave. Something about him always managed to make me somewhat uneasy. I was already dreading the idea of spending time with him. Why was I always so accommodating?

"So I get that you've finished the drawing due tomorrow?" He asked and I nodded.

"I'll finish shading it later, but yeah." I awkwardly rearranged my books in my arms. "How are you doing with yours?"

"Done as well. Haley, my model, is super easy to work with."

I smiled. "That sounds great."

"It is! Anyway I'll let you go now, I have class" he said before going away.

I took the folder of my drawings, deciding to go out for my free period. I exited the building and sat down on the steps, taking out my drawing and charcoals to finish shading it.

I stared at it for a while before starting. It certainly wasn't one of my favourites, but it wasn't bad at all. The words written behind it making it a little more special. It was almost done, Harry's shirt being the last thing left completely white.

I sat more comfortably and lowered the tip of the charcoal on the paper. I didn't even manage to touch it before feeling a sudden wetness on my hands. I automatically stood up, my brain barely registering what had happened, shaking the drawing to try to get rid of the water before it ruined it. The book I'd put on my knees fell loudly on the ground and as I looked at it I noticed that my shirt was wet as well.

"You gotta be kidding me" I hissed under my breath, a fast glance at the drawing proving me that it was ruined.

All of sudden I noticed a presence a few feet in front of me and I looked up to glare at the culprit, just to be completely shocked by who was standing there.

"Seriously?" I snapped, annoyed by the fact that he'd ruined my project.

He said nothing, his green eyes studying me, the bottle in his hand still open.

"Why would you do that?! I thought you liked it?" I hissed at him, way more harshly than I truly intended it to be.

"I did" he replied quietly, the shadow of a smile on his lips.

"Then why-" I stopped myself, deeming it not worth of knowing the answer. "It's due tomorrow! How am I gonna redo it now? There's no time!" I hissed, taking my bag and walking down the stairs. I had no idea of what I would've done. It was a disaster. "You know what?" I said, turning around. "I don't understand why you dislike me so much! I've never done anything to you. You're putting me in trouble!" I reached the road and started walking away, glaring at the pavement. "Maybe it would've been better to change model" I whispered to myself, my mind working fast to try to find a solution to the damage he'd done. I could only think of one thing. I stopped all of sudden, turning around and giving him a suspicious glance.

He was still on the stairs, but he'd closed the water bottle and was glancing at me.

I walked back towards him, stopping right in front of him. "I refuse to believe you'd do such a thing" I told him.

"I just slipped" he said, opening the bottle and taking a sip out of it.

I sighed. "Harry. My drawing is due tomorrow. Can you come to mine this afternoon?"

He didn't look the littlest bit surprised by my request. "I thought you had plans?" He said, playing with the cap of the bottle.

I thought of Aiden. I was supposed to go out with him, even though I was nowhere near excited about that. The thing was, Harry had just given me the perfect reason to back out of it. And something told me he hadn't done it unintentionally. "I had to replan" I replied.

"Sure" he said before pushing himself off the short wall and entering the building.

I took the remains of the drawing off the floor and followed him inside, part of me refusing to believe what had just happened. I rushed to reach him, adapting my step to his when I did. "Thank you" I muttered to him.

If he heard me, he didn't show it.

I would've never thought I would've thanked someone for ruining a drawing of mine, but that's exactly what I did.
