THIRD PERSON

"Wait, what?" Hermione asked Harry.

"Did I hear you correctly?" Ron added.

Harry rolled his eyes at his friends, and nodded. "Yes, you heard correctly. I said that I'm friends with Malfoy, or Draco as I now call him, starting today. You guys don't have to be friends with him too, but you can't change my mind."

"How did you guys suddenly become friends?" Hermione questioned, her eyebrows furrowed.

Ron nodded to that question.

"Draco and I had a talk earlier, and we both agreed that it would be much easier to be friends than enemies," Harry explained.

Ron stayed silent, still pretty shocked. Hermione replied, "Well, I must say that I agree with you and Draco. It's much easier to just be friends. I would like to be friends with him too, or at least acquaintances, if he'd allow it."

Harry smiled, "I'm sure he would, you're a wonderful friend Hermione."

Hermione smiled and blushed slightly.

Then they both looked at Ron expectantly. He looked between the two of them and sighed. "I will try to get along with Mal... Draco I mean, but I'm not promising friendship. Maybe in the future, but not right away can I be his friend."

Harry nodded, "Okay, I can accept that."

Later that day the Golden Trio talked to Draco, who agreed to also be friends with Hermione, and to be acquaintances with Ron.

•Fourth Year•

Draco was part of Harry, Hermione, and Ron's friend group now. He had been since late second year when Ron finally agreed to friendship with the the boy. They were all really close friends now, and sometimes Draco hung out with his friends from Slytherin, but he hung out with the three Gryffindors the most.

"Draco?" Harry asked him, one day when they were alone.

"Hmm?"

"There are rumours going around and I thought I should get them confirmed from you, since you're the one they're about."

Draco sighed, and nodded. "Yes, it's true. I'm gay."

"Don't worry, I fully support you Dray. Hermione and Ron will too, I'm sure."

That's not what Draco had been worried about though.

•Fifth Year•

"Tell me why you've been distant!" Harry yelled at Draco who started to walk away when he spotted Harry. "You haven't been talking to me at all lately, and every time you see me you leave if you can! You only talk to Hermione and Ron, and not barely even then!"

Draco turned around to face Harry, and tears were brimming his eyes.

When Harry saw this, he frowned. "Dray?" He said tentatively, stepping closer. "Are you okay?"

Draco shook his head, and wiped away a tear as he felt his heart breaking.

"I can't Harry, I just c-can't," Draco's voice broke and the tears started spilling.

Harry took another step closer, and he hated seeing Draco like this. "What, Dray? What is it you can't do?"

"I can't be friends with you," Draco said quietly, and sunk to the ground. He buried his face in his knees and sobbed harder.

Harry's heart broke seeing Draco so broken and sad. He knelt down next to Draco, but didn't touch him. "Can you tell me why?"

Draco stayed quiet as he continued to sob into his knees.

"Dray, please. Tell me why you can't be friends with me. I'll fix it, okay?"

Draco lifted his head and shook it. "You can't fix this, Harry. You can't force yourself to love someone you don't."

Now Harry was downright confused. "What are you talking about?"

"I can't be friends with you because I want to be more! In fourth year I realized I was gay, and I developed a crush on you! Now it's fifth year, and I'm in love with you Harry! Being around you everyday and knowing that you're straight and will never love me back hurts me! It hurts so fucking much and every time I see you with a girl, laughing and smiling, it breaks my heart! Every time we're near each other I just want to tell you how much I love you and I just want to kiss you! It hurts me that I can't kiss you, and I can't make you happy in a relationship, that you will never love me as more than a friend, that I can never go on a date with you, or marry you, or grow old with you! It hurts me that you'll always see me as Draco Malfoy, your friend! I want you to see me as Draco Malfoy, your boyfriend, the one you love! But it will never be that way, and that's why I can't be your friend! That's why I've been avoiding you! Being your friend breaks my heart!"

Harry was stunned into silence as he took in all this information. Draco took this silence as a bad sign, and stood up. He wiped away his tear stained cheeks, but the tears kept coming. He turned to walk away once again.

Suddenly Harry stood up and grabbed Draco's wrist. "Wait, p-please!"

Draco froze when he realized that Harry was crying, and turned to look at him. His heart broke all over again, seeing his love with tears on his face.

"Please don't go, Dray. You don't understand the feelings from my side okay?"

Draco shook his head, "No Harry I do, you're straight and-"

"No!" Harry cut him off. "I'm not straight. I'm gay too, alright? I didn't figure it out until the beginning of this school year, when... well, when I started having feelings for you, Dray."

"You're just saying that."

"No I'm not, Dray. I mean it! I love you, and it's been hard for me this year too! I knew you were gay like me, but I thought you just liked me as a friend so I never said anything."

"Can we kiss?" Draco asked, wiping away the last of his tears.

Harry nodded, and they both smiled, leaning in.

•Seventh Year (before Battle)•

Harry and Draco were happy this year. They had been dating since two years ago, and they loved each other dearly. Hermione and Ron were surprised at first, but they grew to happily support 'Drarry'.

Harry and Draco had been happy, but then they came out to the school as a couple. Things then changed.

"Harry?" Draco spoke quietly, as he entered Harry's dorm. The Gryffindor was sitting in there alone, facing the window. His face was wet with tears.

"Not now, Draco, okay?" He replied, and wiped away his recent tears. They were soon replaced with fresh ones.

"I don't think you should be alone right now," Draco said.

"I want to be alone," Harry answered, his voice cold and harsh.

"I know this has been hard for you Harry, but you have to understand that I'm going through the same thing."

"No you aren't. You've been out as gay, since fourth year. People are used to it and support you. I just came out as gay two days ago when we came out as a couple. I'm not being supported, like you. I only have Hermione and Ron."

Draco shook his head. "Harry, you have me too!"

Harry was unresponsive as he looked out the window. Draco stepped closer and looked at his face. Harry was no longer crying, but he was looking out the window with a guarded look. He was hiding his emotions. Draco didn't like it, because Harry had never done that around him.

"Harry?" Draco said softly, tears now brimming in his own eyes.

"You know how in second year we said it would be easier to be friends than enemies?" Harry suddenly asked, his voice showing no emotion.

"Yeah."

"Well, now I think it would be easier for us to break up, and keep our distance."

Now Draco really was crying.

"No Harry, you can't! Please don't end this, just because of all the hate you and I are receiving!"

Harry glanced at Draco and he didn't even react to Draco's tears. His voice was harsh when he replied, "I already did. Now please leave my dorm. You no longer have permission to be in it."

Draco sobbed as he ran out of the Gryffindor Tower, and what he didn't know was that as soon as he was out of earshot, Harry broke down and cried too.

•Two Years Later•

Harry and Draco were both nineteen now, almost twenty. They hadn't seen each other since finishing their 'eighth year' at Hogwarts. They had avoided each other the whole time, and now hadn't seen each other in over a year.

Draco still loved Harry, as much as it hurt him, and hadn't dated anyone since. He didn't want to either. He thought Harry hated him, but the truth was, Harry had never stopped loving him. Harry hadn't dated anyone else either, but he went on a few dates and occasionally hooked up with guys, unlike Draco. None of those guys would ever make him as happy as Draco had though.

Hermione and Ron were both still friends with both Draco and Harry, but they just hung out with each guy separately. Lately, they had had enough of Harry and Draco both being mopey and sad all the time. They decided they would bring the two together.

"Here's the new baby room we wanted to show you, Harry!" Hermione exclaimed.

Harry nodded, and said yes when Ron asked if he wanted to see it. Suddenly they opened the door, shoved him inside, and then closed the door. Hermione placed a charm on the door so that it couldn't be opened from the inside no matter what.

Inside the room was Harry and Draco, though they couldn't see each other because the light was off and there was no windows.

Draco didn't know who was now in the room with him, and Harry wasn't aware that someone else was there.

Harry fumbled along the wall to find a light switch, seeming as he didn't have his wand with him, and neither did Draco.

Finally, he found it and the lights switched on. A gasp came from behind him, and he turned to see Draco Malfoy.

"Harry?"

"Draco?"

They were both surprised at each other's terrible appearance. Both of them had messy hair, bags under their eyes, thin frames from lack of food, dull and pale skin, and they both felt really tired and sad.

Draco stayed sitting on the floor at the far end of the room, and Harry backed away to lean on the door.

"Hermione and Ron probably want us to make up," Harry said, more to himself than to Draco.

"Well," Draco started, "you're the one who pushed me away in seventh year, I didn't do anything. You can apologize."

Harry sighed, "I'm not as cold and heartless as you think. I had a good reason to break up with you, believe it or not."

"Well you never shared that 'good reason' with me, because the one I got was terrible," Draco replied, trying to hold back his tears.

Harry slid down to the floor, and looked at Draco. "I never gave you an actual reason, but if you'd like to hear the one I had, I'll tell you."

Draco nodded, too scared to say anything because he might start crying.

"The reason I broke up with you had nothing to do with us coming out and getting hate, if that's what you think. Before that, I had planned on breaking up with you, but I just couldn't find a way to do it. The real reason I broke up with you was because the Battle was coming up, and I knew that either Voldemort or me was going to die. I didn't know what was going to happen and I didn't want to die in that battle and leave you alone with a broken heart. So I decided to break up with you before the battle came, so that if I did die, it might hurt less. I knew either way that I would be hurting you, but I figured my way would be less painful. I seemed harsh and cold when I broke it off, but I was just doing that because it was easier not to cry when I was being rude. You wouldn't have believed me that I wanted to end it if I was bawling like a baby. After the Battle was over and I was still alive, and you too, I stayed away from you. I did that because I didn't think you'd ever be able to forgive me. I've been alone and heartbroken since we ended, and as bad as it sounds, I hope you've been alone too. The thought of you dating someone else, as much as you deserve to anyway, makes me want to die. I don't expect you to forgive me, but now you know the real reason. I still love you more than anyone or anything else in the world."

Once his speech was over, Harry couldn't hold it in any longer and he burst into tears. Draco, who was also crying, walked to Harry and sat down next to him.

"I can't forgive you quite yet, but maybe in the future. For now though, maybe we could start off as friends? I've been heartbroken and lonely since we ended too, and I can't even imagine dating anyone else. I hope that in the future we can be together again, because I love you too Harry James Potter."

Harry and Draco did become friends, and after a few months, started dating again. Two years after that, they were engaged, and six months after that, they were married. They had four kids together, three boys and one girl.

Yes, they went from enemies, to friends, to lovers, to distant, and to lovers again. In the end, lovers they shall stay.
