A//N As for all the errors in this book, I will edit the book when I am finished. The main character's name is pronouced like a Venn diagram, but with a long A sound at the end. Vena.

__________

This has to be one of the most important days of my college years. They are just beginning.

Classes start in a week and half from now and I'm freaking out. I'm choosing my new flatmate today, not because I want one, but because I need one. Who knew rent money didn't grow on trees? I want to live on my own in my new apartment just like I had been for the whole summer.

But here I am, waiting for my next applicant that is, in fact late.

I sit at the island in the middle of my kitchen while drinking my tea, thinking to myself whether or not I really do need a roommate. I've interviewed three applicants who have applied to be my flatmate. I'm starting college here in New York soon and I won't have time to work like I did in the summer.

I seriously didn't want a flatmate but the owner of my apartment thought it would be a fantastic idea to raise my rent from $2000.00 to $3000.00, a month before school starts. It's not like I have choice in the matter. I am so screwed unless I get someone to pitch in. I need someone to help pay at least half of the rent.

I have interviewed three people; two girls and one boy. The first person I interviewed was a girl whose name is Lanelly. I know it's a very weird name. She is very weird, I must say. As soon as she stepped through the door I sensed it was not going to end very well, and I was right because she was the weirdest person I had ever met. She tried to take my socks and she licked my counters, telling me it tasted like cheese... If that dosen't say weird then I don't know what does. She's definitely a no.

Next was a boy whose name was West. By the sound of his name you would think he would be a laid back kind of guy, but that's the exact opposite of what he really is. You know those people who are terrified of germs? Yeah. He was is one of those people. I keep my apartment clean, and I hate mess so it's never messy, but apparently that wasn't good enough for him because he actually picked up a wash cloth out of the drawer (I have absolutely no idea how he knew where they were, but he did. Creepy much?) and washed my counter tops.

Yeah, let that sink in. He is a creep and and germ freak. He is definitely another no.

The last person I had recently interviewed was a girl whose name is Laya. She was one of those girls who belongs in a sorority, but beside that fact, she is quite nice and seems like a person I could live with. I would definitely consider her.

At this moment in time I'm waiting for my last applicant whose name is James. I've never met him, but he seems nice according to his e-mails.

I look over at my phone and there is a message from Zeke sitting on the screen.

"Please call me, Vena. I miss you."

Zeke.

That name has stayed in my head since the day of graduation.

The day he broke my heart.

Zeke Camber is the name of my first love.

It was the day of graduation that he broke up with me. He had told me that day that he didn't want to have a long distance relationship, but I knew that wasn't the truth. Just one week before graduation I caught him making out with my good friend, Talia. It was heart-breaking because a month after he broke up with me and I found out that he went and dated Talia. Just the fact that he cheated on me tore me apart.

I love him.

No.

I loved him.

It has been 25 minutes past the meeting time I had set. Wow, I guess that says how much he wants this spot.

Suddenly there is a loud knock on the door. I get up off my comfy chair and go to answer the door. This better be him or else I am going to blow a gasket.

I open the door to find a tall muscular boy with bright baby blue eyes. He's wearing a brown leather jacket and black jeans. His hair is short and dark brown. He leans against the door frame and his eyes meet mine. He looked like a Calvin Klein model. He certainly looked attractive.

I recognize those blue eyes, but I can't quite make out how I recognize them.

"Hi, are you James?" I ask

"Yup, that's what my mom named me!" He says excitingly and stands up straighter.

I laugh. "Would you like to come in?" I ask motioning towards the living room.

He nods quickly, "Yes I most certainly would."

I step out of his way and he walks in.

"Nice place you got here." He comments while examining my apartment.

"Yeah, I guess so." I say awkwardly.

He comes to a halt, "Lead the way."

I step around him and walk into the kitchen and sit at the island. He walks up and sits in the tall chair across me like it was no problem. I mean, I'm not short. I'm the average height for a 19 year old woman. Still, I have trouble getting up onto these chairs.

"Coffee or tea?" I ask getting up off the chair.

"Coffee please." He says sweetly.

I start to make the coffee as he talks.

"So Vena, what questions do you need to ask me before you let me move into your gorgeous home?" He asks.

"Just hold on a second," I shift to the fridge, "What do you take with your coffee?"

"Just plain, please" He says politely.

"You just made my life a lot easier." I tell him sarcastically, shutting the fridge door.

I set his coffee in front and sit down in my chair.

"Oh, this is good." He smiles at the cup of coffee as if he's never had it before.

"Now let's get down to business." I say.

He sets his hands on his lap, "Okay!"

"Why do you want to live here?" I ask. This sure does feel like déjà vu.

"Because it is close to the college and I need a place to live since I got kicked out out my dorm a week ago." He states.

"Okay then. How did you get kicked out of your dorm?" I ask.

"Lets just say that the Dean does not like when you smoke in your dorm." He says.

"You smoke?" I ask surprised.

"Oh, god no. It was my roommate and he got kicked out as well, but because I couldn't prove who was smoking, we both got kicked out." He shrugs.

"Okay good, because I will not tolerate smoking in this apartment." I say sternly.

"That is a-okay with me." He says.

"Good, now lets continue," I say. At that moment my phone starts to ring, "hold on a second."

"Okay" He says, a grin spreads across his lips as I answer the phone.

"Hello?" I say.

"Hey, its Laya." I hear a her say.

"Oh, hey Laya. What's up?" I ask.

I glance at James and see him giving me a cheeky smile. I smile back.

"I just wanted to let you know that I can't move into the apartment. Sorry. I just got accepted into a sorority house this morning." She says happily.

I should have bet money on it.

"Okay, thanks. Talk to you later." I say and hang up.

I groan internally and look at James sitting there with a grin on his face.

"Say I was to let you live here, what would be 5 rules you would have?" I ask.

He thinks for a moment.

"To keep this place clean from top to bottom." He says.

"Wait, before you continue, are you a clean freak?" I ask.

"No. Not at all. I just like to have things clean. I'm not a messy person, and by the looks of this apartment, neither are you." He says, and he's right.

"Next is that you have to let me cook all meals." He continues.

I nod. "I am very okay with that."

"Next, you have to let me have a lock on my door." He says.

I nod slowly.

"I'll do all the dishes if you wash both of our clothes." He says, looking me in the eye.

I do very much hate doing the dishes, so yeah, I think I could handle doing his laundry. "Alright."

"Last is that you must inform me if you are inviting someone over." He states.

"Okay, sure" I respond.

"Now you list your rules." He says, motioning to me.

"Okay, well you pretty summed it up, except I have one more rule." I say crossing my arms.

"Okay, hit me." he says.

I hit his muscular shoulder with a bit of pressure, but not enough to hurt him.

"It wasn't literal, Vena!" He says playfully shouting. He rubs his shoulder as if I actually hurt him.

"Okay, my last rule is no going through my stuff." I say.

"Fine, okay." He laughs, "So does this mean I can move in?"

I slightly nibble on my bottom lip. After a few minutes of thinking, I finally hold out my hand for a handshake.

He takes it, his grin big. Actually now that I think about it, I don't think he stopped smiling the whole time he's been here.

"Rent is $1500.00 a month. You can move in tonight if you wish." I say, pulling my hand out of his grasp.

"Tonight would be great." He says and starts to walk towards the door. He suddenly turns to me with a desperate expression plastered on his face.

"Vena, would you be a dear and come with me to my mom's house to help gather my things?" He asks nicely.

"Actually, I'm more of a gazelle. Graceful, prancing around," I do a fake prance. He just looks at me pleadingly.

I groan. "Fine..."

He opens the door for me.

"I am not a nice person. I hope you know that." I say, stopping in the doorway and looking at him.

"I would like to beg to differ." He says.

"I'm sure you would." I respond.

He shakes his head. "Thank you so much. I couldn't do it all on myself."

"Yeah, it's no problem, but you do owe me." I tell him.

His smile fades a bit, "I'm sure I do, Vena."
