Chapter 15
Just Unbelievable
Xavier’s POV
I can’t believe I really told him, I could feel my smile gradually spread across my face. I lightly pulled my hand away from his and buried my face in my hands out of embarrassment. I could feel my face start to burn, I was so bad with these type of confessions. Love confessions made me feel so shy.
We couldn’t just get together though, Sophie is still my girlfriend. I have no idea what I’m going to do, she’s going to be heartbroken. The thing is I don’t know how I’m going to be able to break up with her. I’ve never been with anyone else, so I don’t exactly have the experience. Hopefully she isn’t too upset and we can still remain friends.
There’s also the fact that Zac supposedly has a secret crush on someone, the curiosity is killing me. I know it doesnt have anything to do with us getting together, but it was still something i wanted to know, so badly. I just have to find out who it is, he’s my best friend so surely he will tell me... eventually. Otherwise I will have to set out on an investigation of my own and I'm sure my friends would want to join in and help me out.
I lifted my head from my thoughts and turned to stare at Aiden. I didn’t know how I didn’t realise this earlier, but I guess I was trying to push it all away. I felt like I couldn’t possibly love him since I was in love with Sophie, but now I’m not so sure about her and just want to be with him.
I took in his beautiful delicate features, his luscious hair and deep brown eyes. His light stubble and totally kissable lips. I blushed when I realised he had noticed me checking him out. He gave me a smirk and a cheeky wink. I chuckled at his failed attempt at being sexy and he just fake glared at me.
At that moment, the door opened tentatively with Alex coming in with his hands over his eyes. “There better not be anything happening over a rating of PG in here, or I swear” he demanded, sneaking a peek through the gaps in his fingers.
"Why are you watching us Alex, do you want to join us?" Aiden asked questioning his peeking.I watched him blush then cross him arms and glare at us. He sat down on his desk chair and turned away giving us some privacy.
I pulled Aiden into a hug and whispered to him so that only he could hear, “I really like you”.
“Awww, I knew it!” Amelia shouted as she walked into the room with Zac following close behind.
Aiden turned to her, “How did you even hear that, you were a whole room away” he said, then muttered ninja under his breath. I chuckled at him, laughing quietly on the inside.
“I was listening through the door” she admitted giggling to herself. I gave her a blank look, of course she would do that.
Aiden turned to her glaring and asked “What happened to privacy?”
“Umm…well who wants popcorn?” she asked excitedly. Smooth, she changed the subject. She was a funny one, Alex had a good one.
“Um what has that got to do with anything” I said then laughed, giving in to the temptation.
“Absolutely everything” she stated, grinning back at me.
"Ok then", I concluded laughing a little and shuffled my seat close to Aiden’s. Then smiling sheepishly when he got startled by my sudden presence next to him. I snuck an arm around his waist and cuddled up to him. He was so cute, how could I have been so oblivious to my feelings for him. I felt like somewhat like a baby kitten, ok that was a weird thing to compare myself to.
Aiden’s POV
I couldn’t stop smiling, this was like a dream come true, it was like one minute I was miserable and the next I was on top of the world. It was pretty unrealistic but it felt just like that, I don’t even know how it happened. I didn’t even want to talk to him when he was in here alone with me and then we were holding hands. It was happening so fast that I was having trouble keeping up with it all.
But nevertheless I was happy and that is what mattered. We still hadn’t kissed yet though and I was really tempted to do so, but not in front of my friends. I stroked his cheek, smiling at the soft feeling of his skin. I settled both my arms around his waist and put my head on his shoulder. I looked up at my friends, giving them a thumbs up sign. They winked at me and I blushed slightly. I closed my eyes a little, attempting to make a memory of this special moment.
Even though I was the happiest I could be at that moment, I couldn’t stop my thoughts from straying to the fact that he was still with Sophie. At that thought, I untangled myself and put some space between us, he looked up giving me a slightly hurt look.
I reassured him by taking his hand into mine and whispering to him, “We need to talk”. Before waving a quick goodbye to my friends and pulling him with me outside. It was just pass lunchtime and we had skipped lunch so we decided to go to crystal colours café to get a bite to eat.
“Want to walk there?” I asked him. He nodded still with a worried look on his face.
“Don’t worry Xavier, we can talk there, lighten up” I told him, giving him a cheerful smile. He gave a slight smile that brightened up his face.
Before long we had reached the doors of the café. I chose a table near the back and ushered him into his seat before sitting at my own. I relaxed a little and looked across at Xavier. He still had that look on his face, so I just decided to get to the point. I opened my mouth to do so but was cut off by a voice.
“Xavier!” an excited voice called out loudly from across the café. I grimaced a little at the spotlight it put on our table, I didn’t really like to get this kind of attention. Recognising the voice a second after I couldn’t stop the scowl that appeared on my face, why did she have to be here anyway? But when I saw Xavier look at me I turned it into a smile, but on the inside i was irritated.
“Hi Sophie” Xavier replied, smiling at her as she appeared next to our table. She glanced over at me, noticing me before turning her attention back to him. She sat down on the seat next to him and leaned in to kiss him almost instantly.
I could feel the jealously burn within me. I tried to keep an even look on my face but I failed, frowning at the sight. Why was he kissing her back? Minutes went past and they were still going at it, didn’t they remember I was here as well?
I huffed, growing impatient at them. “Xavier” I said and he didn’t hear me. “Xavier!” I said louder and he still respond in any way. I made a move, touching him on the arm and shook him. He pulled away from her for a second giving me a glance before resuming. They were in a public café for god sakes, why were they doing that here of all places. Especially, why was he kissing her in front of me.
I crossed my arms, disguising the hurt that was seeping through my body. What happened to the last hour did he already forget what happened? Was I that unimportant to him?
I picked up a few sugar packets and a pepper one, tearing them all open, I collected some in my hand and threw it at them in a huff as I stood up in anger and stalked out of the café. I thought this was the beginning of our happy ending. So then why was he being such a jerk about it?
But before I got too far, I heard running footsteps behind me. I quickened by pace, storming further down the path towards my house. When I reached my front yard I could sense someone right behind me. Suspicious I stopped and turned around and I stumbled backwards onto my back as a familiar body collided with mine. I swept the hair from his face to reveal Xavier. I turned my face away from him, not wanting him to see me this way. Although, I did see the specks of sugar and the occasionally pepper dot in his hair which made me smirk.
“Aiden” he whispered, still on top of me. I made a move to get out from under him but he stopped me in place.
“What?” I asked with a cold tone.
“I’m sorry” he told me. It seemed like he was always apologising to me.
“Do you even know what you just did?” I replied in a criticising tone. I pushed him off of me and stood up.
“I know but…I know there’s no excuse” he said following me.
“Then why did you do it?” I asked, turning to face him, hurt evident in my voice.
“I wanted to see if there was still anything there” he told me, bowing his head in shame.
“Did you end it with her?” I questioned, somewhat hopeful that he did.
“I was going to but I couldn’t” he answered with a guilt written all over his face. Well at least he knew he had to before I had to tell him. It must mean something right?
“Then you can’t be with me, not until you two are officially over” I said in conclusion, walking up the path towards my house.
“Wait! I’ll tell her tomorrow, I promise” he said in quiet voice.
“Don’t make promises you can’t keep” I replied with a sad look and went into my house. Tomorrow was Monday and hopefully everything will be sorted out by then.
Xavier’s POV
I had to do it, I thought, repeating it back to myself as I waited for Zac to arrive at my house. I was nervous but I knew I had to break up with her. It was the right thing to do and I couldn’t string her along any longer than I already have. I still loved her, but after that kiss yesterday, it just didn’t feel like it used to. I had to stop using her, I had been doing that all last week whenever I saw them together. It was over and I knew it.
I heard a beep which interrupted my thoughts, I hurried towards the door and slipped inside. “Hey Zac” I pulled my seatbelt on and he started driving.
“Hey, what’s up?” he replied, keeping his attention on the road.
“I’m going to break up with Sophie” I wanted to be with Aiden so I had to or he probably won’t talk to me until I do.
“Good luck man” he said reassuring me with that familiar smile.
I opened the door and stepped out onto the school ground. I made a 360 turn to try and find Sophie, but it seemed like she hadn’t arrived yet. I walked aimlessly around the grounds, waiting for the bell to ring. Then bell finally rung after what felt like hours when it was probably only a few minutes. I walked with confidence towards my locker whilst really on the inside I felt like I was going to throw up.
I opened my locker and felt arms wrap around me, instantly smiling I turned around. “Hey A…” It was Sophie, “Hi Sophie” I squeaked out, blushing from getting the wrong name. She didn’t seem to notice though and just hugged my body towards hers. I couldn’t do it, how could I break up with her. I tried giving myself the pep talk, but it didn’t work.
She gave me a concerned look, “Is everything ok, Xavier?” she said sliding her hand up my arm. I flinched moving her hand off me.
“I…Its nothing, lets go to class”, stupid! That was the perfect opportunity. I saw Aiden and he just turned away from me with a disappointed look when he saw me holding hands with Sophie. I mouthed sorry to his friends that were next to him. I should have done it, I feel really guilty about it.
I spent the whole day thinking of ways to do it, but I always backed out at the last minute. Aiden and his friends are avoiding me and Zac just gives me this disappointed look. I walked out of my last class towards my lockers, this was my last chance, or I wouldn’t see her until tomorrow. I saw her out of the corner of my eye and I saw Aiden a few steps behind her. He was watching me.
I took a deep breath and closed my eyes for a second, I had to calm down. Sophie bounced over to me and swung her body around to meet mine. She looked so happy and I didn’t want to be the one to ruin her happiness. “Sophie” I said in a serious tone.
“Xavier” she teased in a flirty voice. I faked a smile, remembering that i was doing this for him.
I saw Aiden looking at me with those intense eyes, “Sophie, we’re over” I untangled her from me and walked away. I turned back one last time, to see tears falling down her face. I felt so bad, I had never done this before and I just didn’t want to have to do that again. Breaking up with someone is one of the worst feelings in the world.
I ran out of the school, I didn’t want to see her it would just break me. I didn’t want to have to do that, but I didn’t love her like I loved him anymore. It was clear, we couldn’t be together. I had to do it. When I finally reached my house, I went inside and just collapsed onto my comfortable bed. I kept telling myself it was the right thing to do, but it was just unbelievable. My first love was well and truly over.
Did I make the right choice though?
I unlocked my phone and flicked to the picture Aiden when we were on the ferris wheel together. He wasn’t the only one that got a picture of that moment from Amelia. I smiled as I looked at how couple like we looked in the picture. I hugged my phone to my heart and concluded, I did make the right choice, he’s the only one for me.
“Thank you for choosing me” I said out loud into the universe. I smiled to myself and lifted the phone so I could take one last look before I fell asleep.
