(Kellin's POV)
I scarf down half my omelet, then jump up to get outside to get to the bus stop. I slam the door and turn around to stop dead in my tracks, Vic was actually outdoors. He was wearing black shorts and a black tee shirt, no shoes. His dark hair messy and curly, hands stuck in his pockets as he leaned against the doorframe of his house.
He pulled his thin hand out of his pocket and waved a little, which I returned slowly. I gulped and walked closer to the bus stop since I could hear the bus coming. The gravel crunching beneath my feet was the loudest noise between us. I could hear my pulse in my ear, and I wasn't sure why I was so worked up about this. Maybe it was because he never came out of the house.
Vic looked in his mailbox and I ran my eyes down his frame. He shifted his weight to one foot and looked through the envelopes. Then he spins around and furrows his eyebrows, and then I heard the voice of Vic Fuentes for the first time.
"Do you know if your mom took my mail? I'm supposed to be getting something." He says. I feel my cheeks submerge in heat at the sound, it's lower with a smooth tone that makes my stomach turn. "Uh," I sputter out. "No, uh, I don't know. I haven't though." He nods, "I know." I look towards the bus, it's almost here. Vic looks back at his house, then steps back so he's not in the road anymore.
Without another word to me, he walks inside and I hear he door lock from my spot. I gulp again and can't help but smile. Somehow, just with those words, Vic Fuentes has made my day. Now, the idea of going to school and being a part of my stupid group of friends while I do stupid work doesn't seem so stupid because of that voice. That voice broke the silence that I was so accustomed to in the mornings.
_______
I learned then that Vic Fuentes wasn't such a good part of my life. Well, he wasn't really in my life but he was a large portion of my thought process. Because I was day daydreaming about that voice, like I had been for most of the day, I leave late and miss the bus. Scolding myself internally the whole time, I walk home hurriedly. I'll be home late and I know Mom will make a big deal out of nothing.
My shoulders slump in a sigh and I shake my head a little, glancing both ways before I cross the street. My bag is heavy and my feet feel like lead but I know I need to hurry before my mother gets home. I cannot deal with her playing hero mom again. Then that got me thinking, she never really was a mom to me. Sure, she cooked for me. She would clean my room and force me to study. But she never showed that motherly instinct, to keep me from harm or teach me about how to treat others.
And she couldn't play the I Keep A Roof Over Your Head card because Dad paid the bills at home. I frown at the thought of my mom, about how she's thinking she's doing all this good when really she's ruining my life. When I arrived home, Vic wasn't outside like I'd wished. I was hoping we could talk again, he could take my mind off things. But he was apparently inside and the curtains were drawn on all the rooms. Did his family talk bad about mine as well? What did his parents say about me?
I push the door open and check the clock on the oven. 4:59, it read in green numbers. I wipe the sweat from my forehead and go up the steps to my room. I drop my bag and head to the bathroom right away, extremely ready for a shower. I sung Aerosmith while I rinsed my hair, small smile on my lips. The hot water running down my skin made some of the stress go away, which I was thankful for.
Then I started thinking about this morning, how Vic's voice changed my whole day. How Kelly's stories about Jenna hardly even phased me or how Alan's jokes about my skinny little legs faded into the background of my mind. I hardly took any notes in class, actually, I didn't even pull my binder and pencil out, I just sat there.
I blushed and rinsed off the soap running down my chest, then shut the water off. I got out and reached for a towel. After securing it around my waist, I stepped into my room, heading right to my closet as a part of this routine I had formed. After dressing, I grabbed my bag to start homework when I noticed the drapes to Vic's room were open across the street. Immediately, my attention switches and I'm heading to my window after dropping my bag back on the bed.
What had caused this to happen, me and Vic suddenly paying attention to one another? He's already at the window when I get there, small smile on his lips. Seeing it made me think about his voice. He mouths a hello and I wave a little, gulping and leaning on my window frame. Suddenly, Vic pushes his window open and leans out just enough to speak. I lift my window and furrow my eyebrows. "Come outside." He says. Before I can object, before I can remind him how much trouble I would be if I was caught talking to him, he slams his window and shuts the curtains and his silhouette is gone from my sight.
I purse my lips and run my fingers through my wet hair, deciding that it'll be quick. They'll never know, I tell myself. I run my palms over my black jeans and straighten my red tee shirt, then take a deep breath and head for the door. I bite my lip the whole time down the stairs, making sure no one was home yet as a safety precaution before I open the door.
Vic is waiting for me on his porch. I gulp and cross the street over the Fuentes house for the first time in my life. He smiles a little and stands, as if he didn't expect me to cross. "I'm not supposed-" I begin. "I know, and I'm not either. But I'm...curious. About what goes on at your place, what they say and shit. C'mon, I have a place." He says, and leads me to the back yard before I know how to answer. This was bizarre to me, listening to someone that hates my family and vice versa. Well, I didn't hate his. They'd never done wrong to me so I didn't have any reasons.
But he had plenty of reasons to hate mine and that alone made me nervous. I glance at him and he's already looking at me. He takes me to sit under this big tree in his yard, what kind, I wasn't sure but it was pretty. Maybe it was a weeping willow, but before I could question the matter more, he's fired off questions.
"What do they say about us?" He asks immediately.
"To be honest, it's pretty bad. Just always talking about how stupid you guys are and how we're so much better. Makes me mad." I shake my head and wrap my arms around my knees. I twist my fingers together in front of my shins as I wait for him to reply. "Makes you mad?" He says, hugging his knees as well. I nod, "I don't know, you guys have never done bad to me so I don't see the point in doing that to you." I say with a small blush on my cheeks, mostly embarrassment. The other reason was because of realization that Vic was better looking up close.
Sure his brown eyes were nice from the window or today across the road, but up close they were so much better, warmer and gold flecked around the middle. They were beautiful. His hair looked softer and his smile was brighter, seeming to make the whole day better with just one grin. "You aren't like your folks." He tells me with a slight chuckle that makes my heart flip. "You either," I say. He smiles a little and leans back against the tree.
The silence around us isn't as awkward as I pictured, but it was new. It was the kind of silence when you first meet someone and run out of things to say because you don't know your boundaries yet, which is exactly what this is. "What music do you like?" He asks with his eyes still closed. I blush whilst looking at him, his long lashes fluttering, mouth twitching in a smile. "Don't stare, I'm self conscious." He tells me when I don't answer. "Oh, uh," My cheeks heat up. He grins because he notices my uneasy voice.
"I'm just nervous, I'm not even supposed to be like-" I stop myself. "Anyway, I like rock. Well, everything but rock is my favorite. Foo Fighters and ACDC, little bit of Nirvana. But anything is alright." I smile slightly. He raises a brow and sits up, finally opening his pretty eyes. I think of Kelly and push the thoughts away, feeling a little guilty that I'd think like this while I'm with her, or even in general. "What about Pantera?" He asks quietly. I smile and nod, crossing my legs in front of me.
The grass tickles my bare feet and the wind picks up a little. Vic twirls one of the long limbs of leaves of the tree in his fingers, smiling and occasionally glancing at me. "I like them a lot. One of my favorites. Hobbies?" He asks.
I tap my chin. I don't have any, I think. My life is a fucking routine. Never ending cycle of constant habits and stupid rules. "Music is about it actually. I don't do much, to he honest. None of us do." I mutter. Vic turns to me, "Why not?" I sigh and pick at the grass, suddenly uncomfortable. Why did he have to ask? His voice doesn't soothe me anymore or make me weak at the knees, it now makes my skin crawl. "They're always busy with the office, so we do the same thing every day. I have a morning routine and then I go to school and then come home, I do homework and eat and shower and sleep, then do it all over."
Might as well be honest, I think. "Wow," He says as if I'm a species of alien, the most interesting thing he's come across. "I've never heard of that. I couldn't do it." I shake my head and release my grip on the grass. "Worst part is, I don't have siblings. No one to talk to. A stupid girlfriend and stupid friends that I don't even like." My friends and I don't even talk outside of school, I wanted to add. I felt like a little bitch for telling him all this, but then again, he asked. Vic pushes his hair out of his face and pulls at the sleeves of his grey jumper when the wind blows again.
I hear one of his dogs bark from the yard but he pays it no mind. "Why the girlfriend?" I blush and run my fingers through my hair, feeling vulnerable. He made me feel like I could say anything, like there were no boundaries and it was a little scary for me, seeing as no one had ever done that for me. The earlier silence was down the drain now. "Because she thinks I have a thing for her and I don't know how to tell her I don't. She annoys me terribly." I sigh, pulling at a loose piece of fabric on my black jeans.
Vic chuckles, "Well, you can talk to me." I purse my lips and furrow my eyebrows, gulping down the blush that wanted to make its way onto my face. I lower my eyes to his full lips, then up again. He's got a nose piercing, I take notice. How cute. Then I quickly met his brown eyes again and smiled a little as if to thank him. "Yeah, but how?" He grins slightly and pulls his phone out and wiggles it a little in the air.
So we swap numbers as I deny myself the urge to blush yet again. Jesus, what is wrong with me today? I hear my mother pull into the driveway and I jump up, gasping a little. "Bye, my mom is home!" I dart from under the tree, I thought I heard him starting to say something, but there is no time. I run into the yard, panting a little. "Kellin? What are you doing?" Mom puts her bag in her shoulder and starts jingling the keys in the door. "Just," I scratch the back of my neck. "Going for a run."
"Without shoes?" She asks. I purse my lips and start walking in. "Well, I didn't want to get them sweaty." And she fell for it. Later that night, it makes me think.
How much could I really get away with?
