The day had gone considerably better than I thought it would. For most of the day, I put out of my mind the dream about Dask. He acted like nothing had happened and Derek laid off commenting about my and Dask's friendship. Everything was going great.
We and our families had spent all day together, exploring the island. We took in a large cliff face surrounded by large boulder rocks, full of crevices and hiding places, which included some larger cave like areas. It was awesome. There were nooks and crannies all over the place. We had to be careful we didn't get lost. My mom had a makeshift map that the owner of the manor had provided.
We eventually followed a trail that veered around the perimeter of nearly the whole entire island. The trail led us to a quiet beach inlet, where the water was calm. Soft white sand interspersed with small smooth pebbles lay under our feet. It had taken us about two hours to walk the trail.
We ate a picnic lunch, which had been carried there by Derek, Dask and I. It hadn't been much of a chore, considering the picnic had been loaded into a special backpack carry case and the load was shared between the three of us along the way.
Sitting, eating our lunch, my mom commented, "This is a nice spot."
"Yes, it's lovely," Dask's mom agreed.
"I'm surprised," my dad said and Dask's dad nodded.
Dask and I turned to look at eachother. He smiled at me and there was a twinkle in his eye.
"What do you boys think?" asked my mom.
"It's nice," replied Dask.
I nudged his shoulder. He grinned at me.
"Derek?" my mom asked him.
"Huh? Oh, it's...different," Derek replied.
"Joseph?" my mom prompted me.
I know I probably should have had my answer ready, but I didn't and so the words just fell out of my mouth.
"It's weird. I keep thinking we're going to come across the angry ghosts of those people that were murdered by the crazy rich family who owned the manor."
Everybody stopped eating and was looking at me.
"They wouldn't come out during the day, doofus," said Derek.
Dask laughed.
"Out of all the places we could have gone, why did we come here?" I asked. "We could have gone to one of those tropical islands with heaps of hot girls for me and Dask to look at."
"For me to look at too!" chimed in Derek.
"You have a girlfriend," I said to Derek.
My dad slapped us both on the back of our heads. "Enough of that talk."
Mine and Dask's moms shook their heads. Dask laughed and his dad looked on in amusement.
Eventually my mom answered. "It's something different, Joseph."
"Yes, and we get the whole island to ourselves," Dask's mom added.
"It was cheaper," my dad deadpanned.
Dasks dad laughed, then said, "Not many people want to go to a supposed haunted island for their summer vacation. It brought the price down a bit."
"That means we get to stay here twice as long," my mom said.
"Did I mention that we get the whole island to ourselves?" Dask's mom chimed in.
Dask smiled at his mother. "Yes mom."
"Besides, I heard you say the caves were 'awesome'." My mom said.
"They are," I agreed.
We all finished off our lunch and were relaxing when Derek threw a grape at Dask.
"Hey!" Dask exclaimed.
I threw my sandwich at Derek. The sandwich opened mid-flight and the contents splattered his cheek and nose.
"Oh, it's on!" Derek said, grabbing the ketchup.
My mom slapped his hands away. "That's all the ketchup we have for the whole vacation."
Derek scooped out the contents of his sandwich into his hand instead.
"Ew!" said Dask.
My mom looked stricken. "That's good food!"
"Not anymore," said Derek.
I stood up and ran away from Derek. Not thinking, I headed towards the water. Realizing I still had my clothes on over my swimmers, I ran away from the water and back towards the picnic.
"Get out of here!" my father called out and the other adults shielded the food.
Dask threw me his fruit drink. I caught it and turned to take off again. Too late, Derek threw his sandwich at me, but I ducked and it went over my shoulder. I squirted the juice all over the front of Derek's shirt, surprised to see he didn't move. He was frozen to the spot, looking at something behind me. I turned around, and there, was Dask's dad with his face covered in ketchup and the entire contents of the sandwich Derek had thrown.
"Sorry?" tried Derek.
Dask's dad grimaced. My mom gave him a cloth to wipe his face off.
My dad and Dask's had a silent conversation with their eyes. They swiftly stood up and together, picked up Derek and carried him over to the water and dumped him in.
"I need these clothes to walk back in!" Derek called out.
Dad shrugged. "You have swimmers on underneath. Put your clothes in the sun to dry off."
Later on, I stripped down to my swimmers, and swam in the clear and surprisingly warm beach water.
I caught Dask watching me a few times. He would smile and look away. I decided to stay in the water when Derek got out.
Dask walked towards the water. I watched him strip off and my eyes were everywhere. His slim muscled arms, his strong shoulders, broadened chest, and beautiful stomach. Not to mention his sexy legs and the swaying of the swimming short material against his groin when he walked towards me. I turned and swam away a bit.
I heard him enter the water and splashes as he approached me. I wanted him close, but I wanted him further away.
"Hey," Dask said, behind me.
I swallowed and took in a deep breath before turning around.
Dask was gorgeous. He was even more attractive, wet. His golden hair was soaked, plastered to the sides of his head and framed his face. His facial features stood out, glistening with water. His golden lashes has darkened, wet and dewy and sticking together in places, drawing attention to his beautiful eyes. His lips were soft and full and water shimmered on parts of them under the sun. They were plump and ripe for kissing. He was tempting. Sexy in the most unimaginable way.
Dask smiled at me.
I felt like my voice had gotten trapped in my throat.
"Hey," I barely managed.
He accidentally brushed up against me and I groaned internally. I moved away from him, treading water and tried to keep a safe distance between us.
I flicked some water at him and he flicked some back. We really got into it, splashing and playing about.
The day wore on and our families decided to head back to the house.
It was late afternoon. The adults were creating a fire to chill out around and Derek was face timing his girlfriend.
Dask and I decided to explore the caves a little, which were not too far away from the manor.
"More girls like me than you." I said, ribbing him during the walk.
Dask shrugged.
"You're the quiet, nice guy," I continued.
"I try to be."
"If only they knew," I joked.
He laughed. "It feels good being nice. Try it some time."
I smirked. "No thanks."
We walked a little further. "You have so many girls interested in you. Why do you only go out with a few girls each year and for so short a time?"
"I don't like getting too serious," Dask replied easily.
"I'd say."
"Not everyone is getting shacked up like you and Kelly."
"We are not getting shacked up! I probably won't even see her next year when she goes away for college."
"Where's she going?"
"Out of state, in Portand," I answered.
"That's a long way away."
I shrugged my shoulders. "She wants to get away from her parents and from our small 'hick town' as she calls it."
Dask laughed. "It's not that bad."
"You reckon you'll get into that college at Dunmouth?" I asked him.
"The vet school?"
"Isn't that what you want?"
"Yes and apparently I have a good chance of getting in."
"Great!" I said, trying to sound enthusiastic. "I'm probably going to do a trade, open a shop up around here and fix cars."
He gave me a considered look. "You'd be good at that."
"Thanks."
"Yeah and then I'd have somewhere to take my car," he joked.
I laughed. "You have to get one first! And your license."
He laughed. "You fix cars, I'll fix animals."
"Sounds good to me," I said, chuckling.
Dunmouth is over two hours away. We would probably hardly see each other. I felt a pain my chest.
"Maybe you can help me study more, and I'll go to college too."
"If you want," he replied.
"You may be the smartest, but I'm still the strongest out of us," I said.
I tripped him over, onto the soft grass and pinned him to the ground on his back, his arm was twisted behind him.
"Fine, we both know you're stronger," Dask said, bored.
"Say 'Jo is the most awesome person in the whole world, he's hella stronger than me and I'm lucky he's my friend'."
He laughed. "No!"
"Do it!"
"Get off!"
"Not until you say it."
"Ow!"
I released him automatically, worried he was hurt. I pulled his arm out from behind him.
He smiled. 'You're so easy."
"You're a pest."
"I am? You are!"
"Nah uh, you are," I said, taking hold of his wrists, pinning his arms above his head, trapping his body with my body weight, my legs pushing his apart.
We gazed at eachother. He watched me while nervously swallowing. I looked at the adam's apple bobbing in his throat. Both of us became aware of each other's bodies. My hips lightly grinded against him. Dask let out a soft moan. His eyes darkened and he bit his lip, looking uncertain. I groaned.
I leaned in and kissed him.
