Chapter 29: Okay

I'd been in a mood all day. Not helped by lack of sleep last night, the detention this afternoon and my worrying about failing.

I was so glad Dask came over to help me with my assignment. He was probably the only person patient enough to get through to me. When the assignment was finally finished I was exhausted. But mostly relieved as I packed my books away.

We settled down next to each other on the small couch in front of the tv in my room. I felt myself relax as I leaned my head on his shoulder, and he ran his fingers through my hair.

He was flicking through the channels while my mind wandered. I asked him, "How did you know for sure you was gay?"

He seemed taken aback. "What?"

"How did you know you was gay?" I sat up straight and turned to look at him.

He looked surprised. "Why?"

I shrugged, hearing the Spongebob Squarepants theme music in the background on the tv. "I just want to know."

Dask was quiet for a moment before he answered. "I don't like girls the same way I like guys."

That caught my attention. "Guys? There's more than one you like?"

"Not at the moment," he replied.

I wondered if that meant there was one guy in particular he liked right now.

"So it's just one guy you're attracted to, not all guys?"

"I've noticed some other guys before who I thought were cute."

That was news to me. "Really?"

He nodded.

Well that was something to get my head around. I'd never noticed any guy other than him. "What sort of guys do you like?"

He just smiled and shrugged, looking at the tv. But I suspected he wasn't really watching it.

Something occurred to me. I asked, "Are you going to tell your parents?"

"Not yet. I'm not sure how they will take it," he said.

"I think they'll be good about it. Your parents are really nice."

"So are yours," he said.

I blinked. I wasn't sure if I was gay. I might not have anything to tell my parents just yet.

He looked at me and our eyes held for a moment. My heart sped up and my hands felt clammy. My whole body blushed with heat. I quickly looked away and said, "But it doesn't mean we are gay."

"We?" It was only one word, but I knew what he was asking.

"I don't know if I'm gay, Dask," I said.

"But you think you might be?"

I felt nervous."I don't know. I might be. How do you know for sure if you are? How do you know it's not just a passing phase and that you're not just horny?"

"Because."

"Because what?"

Dask was quiet a moment or two before he responded quietly. "I like someone."

I was frustrated with his answer that didn't actually answer anything. "We all like people, Dask."

"No. I mean....I really like someone," he said.

"You like someone. That's how you know?"

"It's how I know. Because I've never felt about any girl the way I do about this one guy."

"So there is a guy you like."

He looked down and I barely heard his answer, "Yeah." He didn't elaborate any further.

I was annoyed. Who was the guy that was so great that Dask liked him? My curiosity was getting the better of me. "Who is it?" I asked.

This time a longer silence stretched between us. I waited it out because I wanted to know who this guy was and what was so special about him. For reasons I couldn't understand, I needed to know.

Finally, Dask mumbled something. But it was too quiet for me to hear.

"What?" I asked, moving closer to him so I could hear.

"Jo."

"What?"

"You."

I frowned, confused. "What about me?"

He looked up and his blue eyes met mine. They had an intensity that made it clear that what he was trying to say was important.

I knew I needed to give him my full attention. My eyes trained on his lips and my ears strained to hear his next words.

He spoke softly

"It's you, Jo."

He watched me, a gentle look in his eyes. They were soft and warm and welcoming. I knew I could get lost in them forever.

All the air in my lungs felt like it was sucked right out of me. I felt frozen, like I couldn't breathe. My throat dried up and my jaw hung slack. I couldn't talk. I couldn't move.

I noticed how dry mouth felt. I moistened my lips. I tried to take in some air. My heart was thumping in my chest. My throat felt dry and scratchy when I tried to speak. "Me?"

He nodded.

I couldn't believe it. "That's how you knew you was gay?"

His cheeks were pink as he nodded again.

I couldn't have heard him right. He hadn't just said that. "Me?" I asked again.

Dask smiled, his eyes bright and beautiful. "Yes."

"Why?"

"I just do." His eyelashes shuttered his eyes as he looked away.

I felt honored, privileged that he liked me. I felt a smile touch my lips. "Come 'ere," I said.

He shuffled towards me so there was barely any distance between us. But he still wasn't looking at me.

I lightly rested my finger underneath his chin and gently turned his face towards me.

He shyly looked at me, and it felt like my heart stopped. He was amazing. There was no one else I cared about as much as I did him. He was courageous and honest and inspiring. I couldn't believe he liked me. His eyes captured mine in their soft, warm depths. Then, he smiled.

At that moment, I realised I liked him too. I liked every little thing about him. The realisation was enough to knock the wind right out of me.

He must have seen my hesitation. His voice was uncertain. "Jo?"

I could barely speak. But his concerned eyes drew me out of myself. I needed him to know how I felt about him. "I think I like you too, Dask."

Dasks eyes opened wide. "Really?"

"Yeah."

"What now?" he asked, and my heart beat furiously as he trailed his fingers up the side of my face.

"Will you be my boyfriend?" I asked.

A huge smile stretched across his face. "Yes."

I smiled too. "Okay," I said.

We sat there, smiling at each other for a few moments.

Then a thought came to me. "Can we keep it just between us right now?"

"Yes," he said.

I was unsure what to do next.

Then Dask spoke. "Jo?"

"Yeah?"

"Will you kiss me?" he asked softly.

"Okay," I said.

Then I did.
