Later on, Dask stood up and tucked his shirt in while I lazed on my bed, watching him.
"Do you think we should help them with the decorations?" Dask asked.
"Nah, I'm the birthday boy remember?" I grinned and settled deeper into the bed.
"Jo?"
"What?"
"You need to get dressed." He said in hushed tones. What if your mom comes in? What if my mom comes in?" His eyes widened. "What if my dad comes in!" He panicked.
"Calm down, Dask. Why would they?"
Dask picked my jeans up off the floor and placed them on the end of my bed, before taking a seat on the computer chair near my desk. I raised an eyebrow at him.
"You need to get dressed," he repeated quietly before quickly looking away.
"Says who?" Sometimes I just like to stir Dask up.
He sighed. "Jo," he pleaded, his eyes looking anywhere but at me.
The pleading tone in his voice got to me. That and the fact he was too shy to look at me, which was funny after what we'd both done to each other.
I blew out a gust of breath and stood up, grabbed my jeans and pulled them on. Then concentrated on threading my belt through the loops and clasping it into place. "Fine, let's go," I said, looking up.
My eyes caught Dask's watching me. His face pinkened as he lowered his eyes and quickly looked away.
My stomach tightened and all of a sudden I didn't care about the party or presents or anything other than Dask. I just wanted to spend time with my best friend. I'd missed him. I didn't want to leave this room tonight and I didn't want him to either.
I shook my head and cleared my throat, and tried to pull myself together.
He stood up from the computer chair and I walked over to him and wrapped him up in a firm hug. "Thank you for coming over. I know I've been a jerk."
"It's okay Jo," he said softly and lightly wrapped his arms around me while I was hugging him to me tight.
These past months have been difficult without him. I know we're growing up, we're not going to stay little kids forever. We're going to get girlfriends and finish school, go to college, get jobs and have families; like our parents. All of a sudden it just felt like everything was happening too fast.
With everything changing there was one thing I knew. I never wanted to feel like I'd lost him ever again.
After the weekend of my birthday party, Dask and I started hanging out again.
I was still going out with Kelly. She's nice, and we've had some fun times together. She's fun, beautiful and confident. Most the guys liked her. I had no idea why she liked me. Though I was glad she did. It was easy being with her.
No matter who I was with, nothing could stop my eyes from wandering over towards Dask whenever he was around. I found myself leaving Kelly's side more often than not, to hang out with him. Now that he was single and had more time to hang out, I invited him over my place after school more too.
One day, after school, he came over. We put our bags upstairs in my room. I changed out if my uniform and Dask grabbed some of his clothes to change into. I went downstairs to fix us some pizza pockets.
They were still cooking in the microwave when Dask came downstairs to the kitchen. He'd changed out of his uniform too and his hair was sticking up at odd angles, his face a little pink. He looked cute and I smiled to myself.
"What?" Dask asked.
"Nothing."
I opened the fridge and took out some orange juice, then went to the cupboard to get us a couple of cups. Dask leaned his back against the counter and watched me.
I placed his drink on the counter next to him and took a sip from my own. I looked at him over the top of the cup and my eyes caught his as he was drinking. His eyes crinkled at the sides a little and I knew he was smiling at me.
The microwave went off and I placed my cup on the counter and wiped my mouth with the back of my forearm. I carefully scooped the plate out, wearing my mom's hot pink cooking mittens, and placed it on the counter. The pizza pockets were steaming hot.
Dask finished his drink and wiped his mouth with the back of his hand. I watched as his hand moved across his pink lips, and left them a little red. Dask has nice lips. They're full and pouty.
I grabbed my cup and finished it off. "Do you have any homework?" I asked.
"Literacy and math. Both due tomorrow," he answered.
"You reckon it'll take long?"
"Probably not. I finished most of it over the weekend."
I picked up our cups, rinsed them out and placed them upside down on the dish strainer. Before I sat on the stool near the counter, and grabbed a pizza pocket.
Dask sat down next to me and grabbed one too.
"Mmm. I haven't had one of these in ages," he murmured.
I smirked at him. "Only the best for you, Dask."
He laughed.
I knew his mom was going on a health kick and most of his lunches these days consisted of fruit, salad and wholegrain wraps.
We finished off our pizza pockets, Dask went upstairs to rinse his hands off in the bathroom while I rinsed the dishes. I put them in the dish strainer, next to the cups we'd used. I washed up in the bathroom, before going back to my bedroom.
Dask had pulled out his homework and was sitting at the computer desk, completing it. I sighed and grabbed my own home work out and spread it over my bed.
Dask turned around in the chair to face me. "Do you want to switch places?"
I shook my head. "Nah."
After a while, I'd completed half my homework and I was growing bored.
I looked over towards Dask and saw that he'd finished his homework and had gone onto the computer. Probably chatting to Clara over facebook. I gritted my teeth in annoyance.
I must have made a small noise, because Dask turned the computer chair round to face me. I kept silent and tried to concentrate hard on my work, which wasn't easy with the splitting headache I was beginning to get and feeling Dask's eyes on me. I looked up at him. "What?"
"You want some help?" he asked gently.
"No," I snapped.
Dask sighed. "Fine." Then he turned back around. I felt a little bad for snapping at him.
I moved the books and worksheets from my homework folder, into a pile on the side table, next to my bed.
I set up the xbox in my room. Dask turned to see what I was doing and switched the computer off. I patted the space beside me on the small couch and he walked over and joined me. I put a control into his hand, then scrolled through the settings and put a saved game of ours on.
After a few games, I heard my mom's car pull up. I went outside and Dask followed. It turned out she had some groceries.
"Hello boys," my mom said warmly.
"Hello Mrs Carter." Dask smiled.
"Hi mom," I replied. We took the groceries inside for her.
"Have you boys done your homework?" she asked after we'd finished.
"We were just finishing up when you got home," I explained.
"Good. Dask will you be staying for dinner?"
"I'm not sure." Dask looked over at me. I nodded my head.
"l'll call your mom and let her know," my mom said cheerfully, before turning to gather ingredients for dinner.
We went to my room and I dug out my homework again. Dask went back to the computer.
I looked at his back, straight against the chair. Golden hair feathered onto the back of his neck. The shirt he wore stretched across his shoulders, outlining every curve and muscle as it pulled when he moved. It rode up a little every now and then and I'd catch a flash of flesh just above his jeans.
I looked at the few math problems I had left and decided to finish them up tomorrow. I stood up and walked over behind Dask. I noticed I'd been right, he'd been having a conversation with Clara over facebook. I forcefully expelled a breath.
Dask turned to look up at me. "Jo?" His eyes were wide.
I shook my head and walked to the couch and picked up the xbox controller again. Dask joined me, and we played in silence.
"Sleep over," I said.
"It's a week night."
"Not like you've never done it before."
"Okay," he relented, caving easily.
We had dinner, took our showers and laid in bed, next to eachother.
My fingers played with the golden curls at the back of his neck, his skin a peach glow.
I heard him swallow. "Should we be doing this anymore?" he said in a quiet husky voice.
I groaned and flopped onto my back. "I don't know."
Dask's eyes darted to mine. "You're my best friend."
"Yeah well. It seems like Clara has overtaken my role."
"No one could ever take your place, Jo," he said softly.
"Good," I said lowly.
Our eyes connected. I reached out and touched the neckline of his shirt with the back of my hand and held my breath as my fingers travelled a path up the creamy skin of his throat. Dask swallowed and I felt the slight bump of his adam's apple bob up and down a little, underneath my fingers.
Dask's soft blue eyes watched me as I moved my hand to the back of his neck and the tips of my fingers teased the golden tendrils there.
My eyes were drawn to Dask licking his full pink lips. Catching them between his teeth, before he let them go and they fleshed out again. Dask's lips were full and pouty. He played with them a little at times. Sometimes, like now, I can't help but remember how good they feel around me. I wondered what it would feel like to have those soft lips under mine. To taste Dask's mouth. Would he let me?
I bit my lip, cleared my throat and let his hair go. Shaking those thoughts from my head. I rolled over to my back and looked up once again at the ceiling.
Dask rolled onto his back too. "Jo?"
"Hmm."
"Night," he said quietly.
I turned to my side to face him and he followed suit. "Night Dask."
We laid looking at each other as our eyes grew heavy and we fell asleep.
