The night had taken a hold of the community. Children’s screams were no more. Fighters had taken a seat where they stood. Eyes still remained everywhere. Ears were still open to the sounds that surrounded them. The fighters counted their wounded, the women rushed to gather up medical supplies. The witches community stunned at the sudden attack from werewolves. Families kneeled over their decease as their cry’s rippled in the silent air.
No one was prepared for this attack tonight. Any night for that matter. All the years the two communities have stayed away from each other. The wolves left them alone, they left the wolves alone. Tonight changed everything. The wolves targeted the high ranking community members and the fighters. What little hunters they’ve trained to keep the peace between all supernatural creatures were dead.
A high council member held his brother in his arms as the last breath was taken for his life. The wolf that attacked him knew where to strike. The main organs were targeted on the man. His neck was clawed, his chest ripped open. The council member leaned over his brother and wept.
A loud sudden scream came from the side where the wolves were seen leaving. A man was walking towards them dragging something behind him as he came. Blood laid upon his body, in his hair was dried leaves and twigs. Strapped to his side was a dagger and what looked to be a cloak.
The Highest Priest ran towards the man, and paused. Unbelieving what he was seeing. Kagen was towing a wolf behind him in wire and rope. Acting quickly, he shouted for someone to help Kagen. Calling for a doctor to come quickly, he rushed to Kagen’s side.
“Are you okay?” The Highest Priest shook the rope from Kagen’s shoulder. “Son, talk to me. Are you injured?”
Pulling back his vest, Kagen exposed his gnarly wound. His side was ripped clear to the bone. Kagen went forward towards the ground. The Highest Priest caught him before he was able to hit.
“He needs a doctor now!” Placing his robe upon Kagen’s side, “Son, stay with me. Keep your eyes open.” A doctor ran up behind them. “I seen bone,” he whispered as he moved out of the way.
“Get this wolf in a cage now! Clear the way, Kagen is to be taken to the hospital at once!”
Men rushed to aid the doctor in caring for Kagen. His eyes closed once they began to carry him to everywhere they were going. The Highest Priest was yelling orders to guard the wolf and Kagen. If the pack finds out that he survived and they had the wolf, they might come back. No one was to go inside Kagen’s room unless it was with him.
Lorraine rushed to the Highest Priest side when she heard him screaming, seeing Kagen, she gasped. Even she couldn’t deny the fighting skills he had. To be able to take down a wolf and survive, he must be better than what she originally thought.
The waiting room was cleared free from all bodies. Only the Highest Priest and his guards remained. News on the wolf was he survived the stab wounds and Wolf’s Bane that Kagen had injected into him. He was certainly strapped to a cage waiting out the remainder of the Wolf’s Bane in his system. The doctor had counted eleven stab wounds along with a deep slice down the back. From what anyone could tell, all from Kagen’s daggers.
Kagen’s daggers now sat on the lap of the Highest Priest. The man had earned his right as a member of this community. He shall be shown respect. Checking his watch again, he ordered one of the guards to call about Kagen’s file. Knowing the man has had a hard life, however, it was puzzling to him on as of why. With his knowledge of the supernatural, Kagen is an asset to this community by far.
“Lorraine said it is on the way.”
“Why is Lorraine dealing with coven records?” His eyebrow raised. “Lorraine has no right to be in the record hall. I want a full investigation done immediately.”
“Yes sir,” the guard made the proper phones calls to the others.
The doctor came out full of worry. His clothes clung to him, his hair was sticking out from all directions. There was a part of him that remain still, unsettled.
“Kagen is in critical condition. I don’t know if he will make it.”
“And?” Knowing that wasn’t all of it.
“There is a possibility that Kagen was bitten, bitten deep enough to be a changing mark.”
The Highest Priest wiped his face as he thought of the situation. Kagen a wolf. It was against the rules. Even if he held no magic, the coven would have no choice but to kill him. No witch was allowed to make the change to a different form.
“When’s the full moon?”
“About a month away.” One of the guards answered.
“We shall wait until then, do not speak of this to no one. We do not know if it is a changing mark. Placing everyone in a panic for any reason is not what we want right now. If it turns out to be, we shall handle it. If not, Kagen has a right to live life.”
“Yes sir,” they all were in agreement.
Tibitha walked the hallway after a nice long shower and helping Vera fix breakfast for the pack that was waiting for Tatom. She listened to the voice coming from the closed door. Dalson was back to being human again. This was a very good sign.
Tapping on the door, she popped it open with no worries. Dalson and her spoke before the tying of the souls. He was not to mate with Tatom until the tying had taken affect for a few days. There was a good possibility that Tatom could relapse back into pain with the emotions from the wolf. They were apart of her son now, just like he was a part of them.
“Good morning, are you hungry?”
Tatom held dark circles around his pale face. By the look of him he was still very much weakened. Dalson growled a bit as she approached the bed. Tibitha smiled a mother’s smile before setting the tray on the bed.
“I thought you two could use some breakfast. Plenty more if you want more. I believe Vera is so use to feeding an army, that she doesn’t know how to cook for a smaller group.”
Lighting a candle, she held it out. “I have to look at him Dalson. Make sure he’s good.”
Dalson growled as he nodded for her to continue.
Holding the candle close to him, Tatom hissed as he covered his eyes. Dalson let a growl ripple through the air. Laying a gentle finger on his arm, he hissed in discomfort. Dalson shifted his body.
“Okay,” Tibitha held out her hand. “You knew I was going to touch him. I thought we talked about this Dalson. I have to make sure he took to the tying of the souls. If not, we’ll have to do it all over. Do you really want that?”
A mixture of grumbling and growling came from the large wolf on the bed. Tibitha continued with her examination. Each time Tatom reacted with a hiss or groan. Letting her know that he was still sore or tender from the tying. Checking out the knot on his head, Dalson grumbled even more. When he woke this morning, his wolf showed him what he had done. Wrapped with guilt, he made sure that Tatom was taken care of even more.
“He’ll be fine. I’m not sure how long the pain will last. I figure a couple of days. This allows the wolf to learn how to deal with his mate a part of him now. The un-comfortableness you are feeling is your wolf. He has a part of Tatom in there and is not sure how to deal.”
“I feel fine, my wolf knows who’s in there with us. He’s purring in pleasure.” Gathering up a glass for his mate.
Tibitha blinked slowly upon hearing this. “Really?”
“Yes, he’s proud to have a part of Tatom’s soul in us.” Dalson lifted up the glass, allowing Tatom to drink slowly.
“I thought that the wolf would be uncomfortable. Well that’s what I at least read.”
“Not all wolves are the same.” Dalson was slightly irritated at her for comparing him to other wolves.
Tibitha was at lost for words. She didn’t know if this was right or not. Dalson’s wolf couldn’t be completely comfortable with Tatom this soon. No wolf jumps directly into the willing of the tying. Something wasn’t right.
Patting the bed, she smiled and left the room. Finding out if he had heard of this would put her mind at ease. The wolves were waiting for word on how things were going. Tatom and Dalson were doing just fine. A bit more than what she was expecting. Tatom’s pain was decreasing with time. His mate was back into human form.
“I need to make a phone call, excuse me.”
“Is everything alright?” Vera knew a mother’s worry. Tibitha had it written all over her face.
“Not sure, Dalson says that his wolf in already comfortable with Tatom being tied to their soul. What I’ve read is that the wolf needs time to understand what is going on. Just seems odd, I want to make sure that there are not any surprises getting ready to hit us.”
Picking up the phone she dialed the one person she knew who would know the answer. The phone rang all the way through to voice mail. Leaving a message, explaining that she just needed to make sure everything was alright. Hating to bother him more with the issues, but he was the only one she knew that would speak of the truth.
Tapping the phone against her palm, Tibitha stared off in space for a moment. Something wasn’t right, something has happened to Kagen. Even if he was mad at her, Kagen would have picked up the phone and hung up on her. Calling a friend to go and check up on him would put her mind at ease.
“Mary this is Tibitha, how are you?”
“Not good, wolves attacked us.”
“What?” Tibitha screamed, her eyes widened in fear. “When did this happen?”
“Hours ago, the whole community is in an up roar. The Highest Priest is at the hospital waiting on word from all the wound. We are in a state of mourning. They killed council members, fighters, citizens. Oh Tibitha, what are we going to do.”
“Calm down, does anyone know who’s pack attacked? Or if they gave warning?”
“No, no one is talking. Lorraine is running around here like a bat on a broom stick. The council are shut up in the chambers. Fighters are everywhere. We’ve had to check in to see if anyone of us has been bitten.”
“Mary, I just tried calling Kagen.”
“Oh sweetie, they don’t know if he’ll make it.” Mary’s voice dropped to a whisper. “He fought the wolves, took one captive. The council has him in a cage somewhere.”
Tears fell from her eyes, “Ka– gen, was he….hmm…will he turn?”
“We do not know of that right now. George was close to where Kagen brought the wolf back. Oh Tibitha I’ve never seen so much blood on a man before. His side was ripped to shreds. George said the High Priest saw bone sticking out. The man was still walking! I can’t believe it.”
“You call me the first word on how he’s doing, do you hear me? Soon as I’m done here, I will be home.”
“I will sweetie, don’t worry.” Mary paused to listen to someone in the background. “I have to go, the fighters are here to search the house again. They think wolves are still around.”
“Okay, let me know.”
“I will.” The line went dead.
Tibitha allowed her knees to buckle. Falling into a chair beside her, tears fell from her eyes. Vera kneeled down in front of her. Placed a supportive hand on hers.
“Tibitha, talk to me.”
“A pack of wolves attacked the community. Kagen is in the hospital, they don’t know if he’ll make it.” Covering up her mouth, Tibitha broke down in full blown cries. Vera wrapped two strong supportive arms around her.
“I’m so sorry, I’m so sorry.” Vera cooed as she rocked.
Alpha Blackwood stood in the back with a hard cord expression. The wolf pack who attacked a witch’s community caused the werewolf community a lot of trouble at the moment. They’ll send out fighters to search every community, including this one.
“Run the boarder, Zero get your Betas. I want a full detail of anything that is found or not. I’ll get Gregory and Daren to back you up. Ivan get the wolves out there. Stay away from Zero and our Betas. Jalin, run with Zero. I want all eyes and ears open.”
“Yes, Alpha.” Each wolf left the room to shift outside.
“Langdon, you and Jace start making phone calls. I want every wolf accounted for. If they do not pick up, go and find them. Get Cherry and Courtney over here now.”
Two hours had passed when Aaron yelled into the house, asking the Alpha to come outside. Nathanial walked swiftly towards the back door. The smell of blood hit his nose before exiting the back room. On the ground in Daren’s arms was a young woman ripped to shreds. Blood poured out of her body. She shook as the pain ran through her dying soul. Gregory and Zero were working on healing her body as he rushed over.
“We found her just on this side of the boarder. She hid some smaller wolves. They are over there.” Daren pointed to a small pack of wolves cowering among themselves. “She was protecting them.”
“Who did this?”
“We’ve tried to ask, but she really can’t speak.”
The woman’s jaw was chattering with fear and pain. Her arms were stiff, locked in pain.
“Who did this?” Alpha Blackwood kneeled down to hear her. “Tell me, who did this?”
Her head shook.
“Do you know?”
The young woman’s eyes spoke that she knew, just couldn’t speak it the words.
“Was it Savage’s pack?”
Her eyes shifted then she blinked. Giving the Alpha a true answer.
“P– – ups.” Her word came with a gurgling
“I will make sure they are taken care of.”
Shaking her head no. “P– – ups, w– w– w– oo”
“Pups in the woods?”
She blinked.
“Josh, Aaron go find the pups. There are children left in the woods!”
Aaron had never shifted so fast before. Running beside Josh, they began in the direction that they found the woman.
Quickly she grabbed the Alpha’s arm with a firm grip. Her eyes filled with tears. “I tried, they wouldn’t listen. I’m sorry.” With that the woman took her last breath.
Alpha Blackwood watched as the light grew dim in her eyes. Her chest fell and didn’t left back up. Her heart slowly stopped it’s fighting rhythm. Zero growled and snapped in his teeth in defeat. They couldn’t save her.
Closing the woman’s eyes for the last time. Daren held on for a moment longer before placing her gently on the ground. Nathanial walked to the back door. Pulling off the curtain that hung, he placed it over her body. The air remained silent except for the whimpers and whines that came from the small pack.
A howl lit up the air as Josh ran towards the pack. Zero was in the process of shifting to let his father know that Aaron was carrying to small wolf pups in his arms. Nathanial headed out into the woods after Aaron. In a distance, Aaron held to babies. They were barely old enough to sit up by themselves. Picking up his pace, he ran ahead to help.
“Alpha,” Aaron showed his neck. Something had scared him.
“Aaron?”
A lonely tear ran from the corner of his eye. “I can’t.”
“Can’t what?”
Josh whined at the question. He too had seen the massacre. They had missed the fight that had held to the woman’s death. Maybe by minutes. Fresh blood held the air with gusto.
“Don’t make me,” Aaron’s jaw shook as he fought the emotion.
“Okay Aaron, let me have the pups.”
Stiffly Aaron handed over the pups to the Alpha then began walking straight pass him and Josh. His fist was clinched tight, his footsteps were heavy. Josh barked and whined towards his friend. Out of them, Aaron had went to get the children. In doing so, he found the others. They too will find them once one of them were able to speak of what their eyes had witnessed.
Walking past the wolves, Aaron went straight into the house. Langdon met him at the door. As Langdon stared into the eyes of his friend, Aaron broke down. Somewhat forced by the Empathy. As his knees hit the ground, Langdon threw a blanket over him. Engulfing his friend in his arm, Langdon unleashed calming vibes. Understanding what his eyes had witness.
Daren rushed over to his son, snatched him up and carried him inside. Josh had told them what was left in the woods for them. They would not make the sons gather the bodies or bury them. Their eyes had already seen too much. Courtney went straight for her mate as Daren sat down on the floor. At this point they could only imagine what his eyes truly saw back in the dark part of the woods.
Nathanial came in with the pups in his arms, passed them off to Vera and Willow. Going straight for his Beta, he took a seat on the floor beside them. Pulling Daren close, the Alpha held both his Beta and his Beta’s son close to his chest. Before coming in he shifted with Josh. Allowing the images of what Josh had witness was enough to understand how Aaron felt. No words to come at a time like this. Seeing the first head of a child made his beast howl in pain at the mere sight. Unable to imagine what Aaron had seen beyond the brush.
Surrounding their friend and pack members. Zero gathered up Courtney who knew nothing at the moment and moved them somewhat underneath Daren and Aaron. Langdon placed himself around Courtney. Allowing him to touch, Zero and Aaron. Thinking of peaceful thoughts, he sent out vibes to calm Aaron down. Stroking the leg of the broken wolf, he wanted to take away all pain. Erase the imagines that fill his dispirited mind.
Taking Aaron to the Alpha’s home, never once did anyone speak a teasing thought or a rude come back. Langdon popped open the door allowing Zero to carry in the asleep wolf. Courtney was close behind, she now understood what his eyes had saw. The pack didn’t realize that Aaron was very sensitive and emotional. With a mate’s vow she promised to keep this between them. However, Langdon knew. He knew each emotion that swept through their bodies. With that Zero probably knew. His words had never been hurtful or discouraging towards him or Josh. Aaron was his Beta through and through. No wolf could ever replace him. Except the up coming fight.
The challenge was put off due to resent events. Aaron could lose his position here very soon. Scott King had challenged for the Beta position. It was to take place before the spirit gathering. Which also never happened. Courtney now worried about what this would do when the challenge was to take place. Scott had approached Zero a day ago about it. Zero actually had completely forgot but recovered nicely. The alpha in Zero couldn’t refuse his Beta showing up a pack member. The friend in him, worried that Aaron would doubt himself causing him to lose the ranking.
Undressing, Zero laid down with his Beta in his arms. Courtney snuggled down beside her mate. While Langdon covered them up. He had to go help with the new members. Kissing his mate on the cheek, Zero snatched a hold of his hand.
“Do not be too long, right now you do not want me to come after you.”
Langdon nodded and hurried out the door. Courtney whimpered softly. She had been worried about Zero’s temper. It seems to be on the rise again. His words had been coming short with everyone including his mate. Her eyes bounced at the clock on the table. If it got too late and Zero grew restless, she would volunteer to go after Langdon. In hopes of calming him down.
The sky had grown dark as his eyes peeled open for the first time in hours. Aaron let out a yawn. Electric shocks danced over his body as his mate curled closer to him. The arm around his chest let him know that Zero had not felt him alone. By the peaceful atmosphere Langdon was curled into Zero.
Wiggling his way out of the holds on him, Aaron got up and walked towards the bathroom. His mind was stuck on empty. His body ached in mourning. Was Savage such a man who knew nothing about the way of the wolf? Wolves treasure their young. Respect all members of the pack. This man was the complete opposite. Almost like something was wrong with him. Like his mind couldn’t comprehend on what wolf life was truly about.
Stepping into the shower, he allowed his mind to vanish with the time. He couldn’t afford to doubt himself now. Caring for those children was apart of being Beta. If he couldn’t handle the draw backs, he surely couldn’t handle the perks.
“Aaron?” Courtney whispered as she came in the door. “Are you okay?”
“No,” leaning against the shower wall, the water cascaded down his back.
“How can I help?”
From the corner of his eye he seen her delicate little hand against the shower door. What a mate she was. Courtney saw passed all his faults, kissed away any pain that formed. Cradled against him nightly. Whispered all the encouraging words a mate could wish for. She truly was sent by the angels above. At times he thought that she was too good for him. Just won’t say it aloud, in fear she will see it’s true.
“I don’t know.”
The shower door opened to her coming in behind him. Her fragile little arms formed a tight barrier around his waist. The gently breeze from her breath tinkled his back. Like a melody so sweet, her heart drummed against him. Cupping her hand, he squeezed. Courtney was his, his alone. Pulling her around to his chest. Aaron cradled her delicate frame inside his muscled arms. Completely safe and trusting, she leaned against him more.
Knowing what he needed, Courtney fell still. Her beast relaxed. Aaron was dominate however he held a soft spot. A large soft spot. The man enjoyed babying those around him, those closest to him. Especially her. Closing her eyes, she felt the gentle touch of the wash cloth. It left behind a small trial of soap down her back.
‘This is what he needs,’ she thought. ‘We shall be the best mate to him. He is our lifeline.’
Her beast purred in pleasure as his lips fell against her neck. His teeth lightly scrapped the soft spot on her shoulder. Making the mate mark burn for him. Her body began to swell in the heat of his passion. Gently two hands snaked around her waist and lifted her up. Wrapping her legs around him, he was ready to love her. Aaron wasn’t a man who enjoyed the hard core screaming, he liked whispers of heated passion on his skin. His deep erotic passionate thrust captivated her in submission. Opening her eyes, his beast was present. The love of a beast. Normally a man would be rough or dirty. Not her wolf, he wanted the deep light that fires their passion for one and another.
“Aaron,” he captured her lips.
“Shh, silence.”
Giving a smile, she allowed her breath against his heated skin speak of the pleasure he gave.
In the bedroom where Aaron and Courtney had left the future Alpha and his mate. Zero was receiving his own passion from a very loving mate today. Since Langdon had fully committed himself to Zero and the pack, there had been a change within him. His fear was gone and Zero was liking the repercussions of the out come.
Laying down on his mate, Langdon caught his breath. The shower had turned off. Zero winked at him as he threw the blanket back over their bodies. Blankets were okay for passion, however, Langdon doesn’t like to be tied down. Including under the blanket.
The door popped open to a better looking Aaron coming in with his mate towing beside him. A smile was placed where the frown once was. Aaron paused for a moment, usually Langdon would move or cower away from the moment if someone else was around. Kissing and holding hands was the farthest they’ve seen. Zero gave a smile, Courtney giggled. This was a huge improvement for Langdon.
Aaron walked over to Zero’s closet and threw back the doors. Zero never cared about his clothes when it came to him or Josh. They pretty much wore the same size in pants and shirts. However, Zero was packing on more Alpha muscle lately. He wondered if he was doing the same.
“I had Courtney put some pants in there for you. Sorry bro, but unfortunately we no longer wear the same size.”
Aaron groaned. This isn’t what he wanted to hear. From what he was able to tell, his body really hasn’t changed much. Yeah, more muscle here and there. Josh seemed like he was getting larger than him.
“What’s up?”
Behind him the bed creaked as Zero got up. Courtney quickly threw on a shirt before their Alpha walked up behind him.
“I know,” Zero motioned for Courtney to leave the closet and them. “I know what’s been going on.” Aaron gave a sideways glance. “Are you forgetting that I know my Betas? You’ll beat Scott and remain as my Beta.”
“Scott is my size.” Aaron whispered. “You’ve gotten larger.”
“So have you, Courtney replaced your pants before you ripped out of them like I did. She seen that they were getting tight on you.”
Aaron threw his head out of the closet, “Really? And you didn’t tell me?”
“Sorry,” Courtney giggled, “Aaron that’s what this is about?”
“Have you seen the other wolves? I’m the smallest out of Josh and Zero.”
“No you’re not.” Langdon laughed from the bed. “You haven’t noticed the height difference when you two stand beside each other?”
Zero chuckled, “Aaron you’re larger than Josh.”
“I am?” A dumbfounded look fell over him. “Really?”
“Really, now stop worrying. Get your mind focused on the challenge. After Tatom can move, we’re heading to the cabin. We all need to spirit gathering. Especially after yesterday.”
Aaron was in disbelief for a moment. Seeing how the three was acting, it lifted up his spirits. His beast was cheering up with the emotion pulling off of the Alpha. This might not be so bad after all. Then again, they weren’t the ones who was challenged. Taking a deep breath he finished getting dressed.
“How’s Tatom?” Langdon asked once they arrived back at the house.
“I’m good,”
Flipping around, Tatom was leaning against Dalson in the doorway. Color was returning to his cheeks and lips. Strength was entering his body once again.
“How’s the pain?”
“I’m uncomfortable now. I think the werewolf blood in starting to take effect. I can feel the difference.”
“Cool,” Langdon smiled.
“What’s up with you Mr. Bright Eyes?”
“Nothing, I guess. I just feel…I don’t know. Trying to find happiness right now.” Langdon swallowed, “How’s Kagen?”
Tatom swallowed, his ex was fighting for his life at the moment. The coven was in disarray. His mother was bouncing with wanting to stay and then leave to help out the coven.
“Last Tibitha heard was there was no change.” Dalson answered for Tatom. This has been a touchy subject.
“Dalson I didn’t mean– ”
“I know. Everyone dances around this damn subject like I’m going to wolf out on everyone. The thing is, Tatom can’t love him now. He’s one hundred percent mine.”
There it was the jealousy that wolves were known to have. Dalson still wasn’t too happy about the relationship that he was minding about. Kagen held a spot in Tibitha were he was earning to have. Tatom was with Kagen before him. The pack girls had voiced their opinions on how sexy Kagen was and how masculine he was. He had heard the silent whispers around him about Kagen.
“Calm down, I told you.” Tatom squeezed. “He’s a memory now. I feel nothing but a friendship.”
After some grumbling from the large wolf, Aaron broke up the party by asking where Jalin was. Dalson threw his thumb over his shoulder to the back yard. Saying thanks, he headed out. Jalin was basking in the sunlight from the chair.
“Hey man,”
“Have you noticed that we are having unusual weather for winter. I mean, Christmas is coming and no snow or really cold weather?” Jalin asked while he looked up at the sky.
Aaron paused, everyone had noticed this. It was unseasonably warm.
“I have a favor to ask.”
“Okay, shoot.” Jalin looked over at him with curious eyes.
Not too long ago, they were at each others throats almost on a daily bases. Now they were buds. Jalin had become a great friend to have watching his back.
“Scott challenged me. And I was wondering if you could be my sparring partner?”
“Why not Josh? I mean, he’s well Beta as well.”
“I know, but I need someone who won’t hold back. Someone who’s been in battle.”
Jalin looked passed him for a moment as he thought about the request. This wolf beside him has no idea what he would be getting himself into. Telling him to stand up, Jalin stood up with him. Before Aaron could blink, Jalin cold cocked him square in the jaw. Aaron flew to the ground before he realized that he had lost his footing. His eyes went out of focus as his head fall backwards. Jalin stood waiting for the smaller wolf to get a hold of himself.
“Sure you want me as a sparring partner?”
Aaron laid down and hold, “Hell yes.”
Shrugging his shoulders, Jalin held out a hand. “Alright man, let’s toughen you up.”
Aaron took a hold of the hand before him. A wicked smile fell upon the young War wolf. This Beta has no idea what he was getting himself into.
