“Alpha, you wanted to see me?” Will stepped into the dim lit room of the pack house.
“I heard that you and David are going to see Jace and his family.”
“We are, after the Sociality Council meeting. Is this a problem?”
“Personally I don’t think you should go.” The Alpha looked at him with determination in his eyes. Will had vowed to his father, not him. The War wolf was under his father’s command, not his. He had no control over what the Empathy does or where he goes.
“Your father is going with us. He wants to meet Ramsey’s third son and see the boys.”
“My father?”
“Who has this right?” Will grew angry at the tone in his Alpha’s voice. Over the years, he had noticed that this younger Alpha had learned about the division in the pack. Those who followed his father stayed a true follower to him. Those who grew up under his hand followed him. Yet some, like the War wolves stayed between. They listened to his Mate, David when they were seeking advice. Others came to Will for advice on life situations.
“Your father is an old wolf who just wants to remember the good times.” Will step towards the Alpha, “You listen here, your father was the best Alpha that this pack has seen in all its time here on this earth. He has the right to honor an old friend, brother and Beta. It has been years since Ramsey’s boys have been home. Now they have mated and found the third son.
“I have a right to see my son! The very son you wanted to murder because of what again. He changed too early. You were a coward, too stupid to try to fix the situation. You even admit to try to stop us; I will knock your ass back into your mother’s womb. Do I make myself very clear?”
“Don’t you ever” The Alpha began to growl, “Speak to me that way. I am the Alpha of this pack.”
“Who is too blind to see that we are sitting ducks out here living like we do? We hold very little knowledge of the human world when it comes to Savage’s next move. Having members of the pack blending in with others is the smart thing to do. Nevertheless, I would not expect that out of you. You think because you are of your father’s bloodline, you can’t be touched.”
Will struck out his hand, placing in all the emotion that he could. Causing the Alpha to grow weakened and scared with the emotion that ran throughout his body. As the Alpha fell down towards the floor, Will bent over him.
“I can help the Empathy train. Sandra’s son is the strongest Empathy known to man. Remember when the witch came all those years ago. This is, the day you need to realize that the world is much larger than you want it to be. It is in danger of dying out because of Savage.
“Open your eyes little one. You need friends. You need someone who is strong enough to help protect this pack.” Will leaned down to whisper in his ear, “Do not underestimating Savage. Your father made that mistake and has sent years trying to make it right.” Upon releasing him, he patted the Alpha’s cheek. “You are your father, I seen him in the very eyes of your wolf and the man. Do not make the same mistakes as he did. Underestimating Savage could kill off this pack. I will report to you.”
“You are loyal to my father.”
“I am. We have grown together. Little one, do you not see that I am doing this for the pack, for you? You so blind with hatred of the old man, that you how allowed this to cloud your vision of the truth. We have Great War wolves, yet we have weaker mates. Time has not been good to us. We are losing our power. I must get to Langdon he will help protect us. Ramsey’s boys, their bloodline is here.”
The Alpha stood back up, looked Will in the eye. “You hate me?”
“I do not hate you; I think you are still a pup in many ways. Misguided by hatred for the old man is the only thing you know. You have allowed knowledge to slip pass you.”
“You will report….to me?”
“Yes, you are the Alpha in charge.” Will lovely pat his cheek. “I do apologize for out ranking you. I had to get you to feel your pack. They are afraid. They are afraid that we will not survive another war. My mate has trained the wolves well. You must connect with your pack Alpha. Before it is too late to take action. Show them that we are one, that you will stop at nothing to protect them.”
The Alpha called a pack meeting with Will and David standing beside him. The wolves did look scared as they gathered around the earth of the divine circle. The Elders sat on their stone seats. Pups gathered around the fire. Mates curled into arms seeking comfort and protection. The younger Alpha allowed his shoulders to fall for the slightest moment. He was young. His region began a little of twenty years ago. Some of the pack still did not trust him. Others followed him with their hearts.
“Will has requested to travel to the Blackwood pack. He misses his son, Jace. My father is going to the Society Council to speak on our behalf. Will is correct we need to find allies. The alliances we have are losing their packs to Savage. I do not want this faith for you.
“Langdon is Ramsey’s third son. Will has volunteered to help train the young Empathy. David and Will are joining the Blackwood pack after the meeting. They will report to me to give updates on the Empathy’s progress. Once the alliance has been made, they will come home.”
The Alpha stretched out his arm, laid his hand upon Will and squeezed. “Will can bring the young Empathy must knowledge. I trust that he is able to help the pack and bring us home an alliance with Alpha Blackwood. With this, I want the pack to send David, Will and my father off on this journey with much care and support we can give.”
With that, the Alpha fell silent. Torn between following his father’s words and learning on his own. However, Will was correct in his words. He had allowed his hatred for the old man blind him from seeing what truly needs to be done.
Days been spent in silence with the Alpha gone to the meeting of the Society Council. Vera paced the backyard while the pups played around. Her eyes would scan the ground for any signs of wolves that did not belong to the pack. Nathanial’s War wolves were out patrolling the area. Ivan had stayed in human form to help if a War wolf became too closer to the pack. She would see him walk pass very so often. A small smile reached her lips Ivan did this on purpose. He was a master of hiding.
“Vera come and pull a seat with us.” Willow came up behind her. “Pacing isn’t going to help.”
“It’s helping me.” Vera snapped. “I can’t take this much longer! Savage could be out there right now and there’s nothing I can do!”
“You can wait for Nathanial to return home and see what the Society has to say about it.”
Vera growled at Willow, causing her to back up and away. This is exactly why Vera had stayed away from her and the others. They were always trying to get her calm down. Right now, she needed to let off some steam. Not keep it bottled up and contained.
“Willow go away and leave me alone!”
Willow straightened up her back, look Vera directly in the eyes. “Is that an order Alpha?”
Doubling up her fist, Vera locked her jaw tight as she stared down the woman. Her claws dug into the palm of her hand. Blood began to trickle down her fingers to the ground. A deep growl rumbled Vera’s chest as her breathing went shallow. Fangs began to push their way under her lip.
Willow shifted her body to match Vera’s stance. “Come on then. I can take you.”
Vera’s left hand struck out towards the cocky woman. Hitting her directly upon the ear, Willow lost her balance. Tripping over the pups toys on the ground, she smacked the side of the house.
“You bitch!” Willow growled as she pushed herself off the house.
No sooner than Willow was able to get her footing, Vera was there striking her back down. Willow snatched a hold of Vera’s shirt pulling her down on top of her. Snarls and snaps echoed through the house. The pups that were outside went screaming inside for help.
Rushing out, Zero and Josh paused at the sight of their mothers fighting like schoolgirls in the backyard. There was more hair pulling than a teenage drama feast. Seeing that Willow gave Vera a good upper cut to the jaw, they rushed over. Just in time for Vera to slam her fist down on she wolf’s cheek. Shouts zipped through the air as names followed behind the shouts.
Josh was able to grip an arm around Willow’s chest while Zero tucked his arms underneath Vera’s armpits and pulled them apart. Vera kicked herself up, flung around at her son. “Stay out of this! That’s an order!” Lunging herself back at Willow, Willow pushed her son out of the way. Both boys stared at each other for a second before Vera’s body pushed into Zero. Vera used her son to push off from as she flew another fist full of anger back towards her friend and pack sister.
“Get everyone back inside!” Zero snapped at the pack that had gathered in the yard. “Now!”
The pack began to walk back into the pack as their eyes lingered over their shoulders for a moment longer. A fight between leaders was never a good thing. Langdon came out, his eyes locked with Zero who shook his head no. This is what they wanted, this is what they were going to get.
Taking a seat on the back porch, the boys let their mothers go at it. Josh would shake his head occasionally when Vera would over power Willow. By now, they figure out that it really was not them fighting. It was more letting off the aggression that had been building up inside everyone for a while. Willow was a strong fighter when it came to Vera. She was able to challenge the female Alpha in ways that allowed Vera to release her aggression.
The fight was starting to slow down as they laid themselves on the ground. Both women were out of breath, and tired from fighting. Willow pushed her friend in the side with a smile.
“It’s been a while since we’ve had a go.”
“Years.” Vera swallowed as she tried to wet her dry throat.
Both women let out a laughter that spoke they were done. Vera sat herself up, pulled her friend over and began to clean out the cuts and scraps made from her claws. Willow pulled at her torn shirt that barely hung from her body. Vera’s pants were missing a leg completely. A long cut started from her knee to her ankle.
Teresa made her way from the safety of the window. As she walked over her friends looked up at her. The frown had already started to form on her small petit lips. Vera stretched up off the ground and pulled Teresa on top of them.
“I hate it when you two fight.”
“Oh but we are so good at it!” Willow smiled.
Teresa wormed her way between them as all three-laid back to the ground. Looking up at the sky, peace filled the air. Each one held each other’s hands. It had been years since the three had just lay down together on the grass and stared up at the sky.
“He’ll come home.” Willow whispered.
“So will Gregory and Daren.”
“That’s right. We will survive this.” Teresa nodded slightly, “We are too stubborn not too.”
Vera looked over at her son who was kind of watching over them. His mate was posing a problem for him now. Langdon’s known for stealing Zero’s attention when Zero became bored with a situation. Lips were the way to go once Zero’s mind wondered.
“They’re cute together.” Willow and Teresa whispered.
“They are.” Vera smiled. All she every wants is her children to be happy with the mate that completes them.
“Once you three are done, we’ll be inside.” Zero pulled his mate along, “Jace stop teasing Jalin. You’ll piss him off again.”
The blonde wolf jumped over the hedge in the backyard. Landed on the ground and leapt over the women on the ground. His paws barely touched the ground as he ran away from the area in came from. Jalin’s wolf covered the distance between the hedge and the open area passed the women. Growling at his mate while the blonde-haired boy ran away from him laughing and teasing him.
“Zero what are you doing?” Langdon asked while Zero picked him up, threw him into a bridal style, and began walking again.
“Taking you upstairs to our room.”
“I can walk.” Langdon tried to hide the smile at the corner of his lips.
Zero winked at him causing a blush to fill the smaller wolf’s face. Ever since Langdon had given himself to him fully, he has been more playful and relaxed during certain personal times. Pleasuring Zero even more, when Langdon only argued enough to make it interesting. Before making it to the door, Zero had claimed the lips of his mate.
“Take inside boys.” Ivan teased as the future Alpha fumbled with the doorknob.
Zero growled as Langdon bit down on his lip then sucked it into his mouth. The hormones rocket the hallway with playful growls. Finally, the doorknob broke off his Zero’s hand. Pushing the door open, he slammed it shut with one hand while the other was too busy ripping into Langdon’s clothes.
“Is this wrong of us?”
“No. My father does not want our lives interrupted with meeting. So for now, we are going to take advantage of that.”
“Okay,” Langdon had no clue what type of meetings Zero will be facing in the future. For now, he will enjoy whatever Zero was willing to dish out.
Ivan gripped a hold of the door; pulled it shut quickly. Between him and Jimmy, they quickly placed up a new doorknob. Zero gave a warning growl towards them. Jimmy just said they were fixing the door before the house sees what he and his mate were doing. The heard Langdon gasp, “My mom!”
“Is outside,” Zero groaned. “Hurry up!”
“Done!” Jimmy chuckled as he slammed the door.
“That was….awkward.” Zero chuckled as he reclaimed Langdon’s lips.
As their heavy breathing filled the room, Zero wondered why they took it upon themselves to fix a doorknob while his mate was loving him. Calling Ivan in the room, Ivan kept to the doorway.
“Sorry Alpha, we know how Langdon is. Your father told us to keep Langdon comfortable. We’ve all felt the emotional roller coaster.”
“I’m getting better!” Langdon snapped.
“You are but…” Ivan rubbed the back of his head. “I’m not saying anything bad Zero. You have not noticed the way Jace as been acting. He is noticing things. Langdon is too. I think they are– – ”
“Blending.” Zero interrupted him. “I think they are blending their energies together.” He looked over at Langdon who looked down at their feet hanging out from under the covers. “You are?”
“We did it one day, thought we could do it again. It’s so easy for us.”
“And?” Zero’s tone was not kind. It held a demanding tone to it.
“And, well, we are sensing something unexplainable in the air. We wanted to get more information before we can to you.”
“Ivan, thank you. Leave us.” Zero shot up in the bed. “Explain!” Ivan shut the door before he felt the Empathy’s fright that formed on his face.
Heading back down the end of the hallway, he noticed that Jimmy’s attention was over the railing of the stairs. Bailey must be below for him to stare like that.
“Happy?”
“I am. I did not think that my heart would beat again after Emma died. Nevertheless, that human is a handful. My beast is just as happy.”
“Good. You don’t mind the smell.”
“Actually, we’ve kind of taken care of that.” Jimmy smiled. “War wolves have healing enzymes in our saliva. Just a little nibbles and licks the scent is no more.”
The information had surprised Ivan. He would have never thought that their enzymes would be able to take the snitch away from a vampire bite. This is something he must remember to tell his son. Amber was walking up the stairs when he looked down. She smiled and waved at them.
“When is daddy coming home?”
“He called a little while ago. They are on their way.”
“Okay.”
“Everything okay Amber?” Jimmy stopped her.
“No, I just…” Amber looked downstairs. “I think…well. I would leave better if he was here, you know?”
“We do. I really don’t like it that the Alpha didn’t take one of us with him.” Ivan growled.
Amber’s curiosity sparked up again. “Could I ask a question?”
“Sure little one.” Jimmy smiled towards her. She had always been nervous around them. Each had tried to use a soft voice however, being a War wolf. A gentle voice was not in their DNA.
“When your sons share their souls with Zero, will they be just as protective of him like you are of daddy?”
“Of course. The time is coming.” Jimmy frowned. “Our sons are becoming angered more. They are beginning to hover around Zero.”
“Meaning?”
“Soon they will bite him and start protecting him. They are getting hard to control. This is why they stay in a separate house right now. One false move can mean big trouble for us all.”
“Daddy will have to step down?”
“Not necessarily. Alpha is going to stay in the leader seat until this war is over or whatever is going on. He does not want the sons to come into leadership during a time like this. Our sons will bed down with Zero. They will protect him and Langdon no matter if he’s is the acting Alpha or not.”
“Bedded down?” Amber thought that did not sound correct.
“After a War wolf shares his soul. We sleep with the Alpha, nothing sexual.” Jimmy swatted at her nose causing a giggle to rise. “It allows us to learn the Alpha’s habits, his sleeping patterns, his breathing. We live to protect the Alphas.”
“I understand that. I just don’t understand the whole divine way of seeing it.”
“Because you are a submissive wolf. The only way you will be able to completely understand is if you are taught the way of the Alpha.”
“Which I’m a submissive.” Amber understood that. She never once tried to pretend that she was the strength of her father or her brother. She would need a strong mate to protect her. Strength was not in her body at all. She enjoyed the dominate ways only if they used a gentle hand.
“Nathanial is proud of you, you realize that don’t you?” Ivan bent down to her, “He speaks highly of you all the time.”
Amber’s eyes filled with tears. “He does?”
“Of course. Nathanial is happy that you are his daughter. He tells you all the time, has it not sunk into that mind of yours?”
“But he’s my dad.” Amber sniffled.
“A father who is very proud of his children.” Ivan realized that Amber didn’t actually believe that the Alpha was okay with her unable to have pups. “Hey, Nathanial doesn’t care about grandchildren. Like he’s said, adoption is always welcomed in this pack. Not too many Alpha’s would take in a child and work hard to find them a home.”
“But that’s other children, not his grandchildren.”
“Let me tell you something Amber, your father is one of the greatest Alpha this community has ever had the pleasure in holding. Alpha Blackwood only sees his family. If they are happy he’s happy. Zero is mated to a man.”
“Empathy.”
“So, Langdon makes Zero happy. That’s all Nathanial cares about. Of course he’s excited to have an Empathy in the pack but that’s not why he’s enjoying Langdon’s presence more. Zero’s mate makes him happy.
“Why do you think he scares the other boys away from you?” Ivan made her look at him in the eyes, “It’s because they are not good enough for his little girl. Each boy who is on search for his mate, he becomes nervous when it’s one he doesn’t like fully. He’s afraid that you’ll end up with some dumb dominate who only sees you as the Alpha’s daughter and not care about your needs. No man right now is worth your hand.”
“Or tears.” Jimmy handed her a tissue from the box on the table. “Go ask Zero and Langdon if we are telling the truth. Zero locked you in the room when the one kid was smelling the air.”
“That’s why he locked me in there!” Amber’s eyes widened. “Oh just wait, Zero!” She stormed up the rest of the stairs, knocked on Zero’s door. “Zero, I need to speak with you.”
The door flung open to Zero popping his head, “Amber right now is not a good time. I made Langdon cry.” A wave of emotion hit the door, causing tears to form in Zero’s eyes.
“I’m sorry bubby,”
“Not your fault. I got mad and then well yelled.”
“It gets better right?” Amber worried about Zero. He had a dark edge to him that no one actually liked about him. When the Alpha power began to appear more, so did the dark edge. Maybe having an Empathy for a mate was for more than one reason. Amber wiped the tear that fell from her cheek. “I’ll go.” She backed away from the door as it shut.
“Everything okay with Zero?” Jimmy’s head popped up over the stairs.
“Yeah, he made Langy cry.” Amber thought about all what was going on. Maybe her line of thinking was getting her somewhere. She smiled down at the War wolves. “I’ll be in my room.”
“Okay, we’ll let Vera know.”
As she shut the door, she ran over to the desk against the window. Sat down and pulled out a notebook. Thoughts came faster than she could write. Langdon was an Empathy, her brother did have a dark edge to him. Remembering that her mother once said that she worried about Zero’s temper. It was more than a Alpha’s known to have. The pen hit the paper as her mind took her away deep in thought.
“Come Daniel, we have more ground to cover before night fall.” The wolf threw a bag over his shoulder as he headed for the van.
Daniel shifted his feet as he looked over the rocky terrain. They had been traveling for days now. Not one Alpha would take him into their pack. It wasn’t their fault, they had been living in the wilderness for so long, city life was a mystery to them. Luckily another Canada pack agreed to help them during this time.
Flipping his blonde hair away from his blue eyes, he took one final look over the land. Nine packs had shown them out the door. He so badly wanted to be mad at his Alpha. But didn’t have the heart. Following the wolf to the van, he climbed in without a word to anyone. The van was filled with five other wolves. One more from his pack and the rest from the (– – – – ) pack. They were bigger in massive muscle size, they were built like dominates should be.
Morgan his life long time friend had agreed to travel with him no matter how long it took. His mate understood that this needed to be done. There was no males to take him as a mate. The pack was Mated out. Not a single wolf belonged to the Canadian packs. All had been mated to females. Being the only submissive male was a tough enough. Not having a chance to be mated took a blow to his self-esteem.
His Alpha came to him telling him that he was sending him to the State packs. He had gotten word that a few of them had mated males. Which surprised Daniel even more. He thought that he was freak of nature. A mistake. His Alpha grew angry with him for thinking this way. Not once had the pack ever looked down upon him for being gay. It was his own mind planting cruel thoughts into him.
The Alpha was correct, he had been the most supportive in helping to find his mate. Before he had left, the Alpha called a full member pack meeting. A large feast was prepared in his honor. Blessing were given by the woman of the pack. Children put on a show about the time he fought to protect a few of the pregnant woman in the pack. A submissive fighting like a dominate was none heard of. He truly didn’t fight like they said, he used his mind to out smart the dominates when they attacked. None of the women said otherwise. The women had sure the Alpha knew it was him that protected them. The Alpha took him into his lodge and gave him the brand that scared his wrist. Tracing the fang marking and the arrow brand, Daniel’s eyes grew heavy.
His home was days away, packs shut their doors in their faces. This wasn’t worth the time or the energy that it took to find a pack that would take him in. So lost in this thoughts, he hadn’t noticed that the van came to a complete stop outside a building that read ‘Highway Motel’.
“Where are we?”
“Somewhere in South Dakota. My eyes are so heavy I think I made a wrong turn. Come Daniel, we’ll get some rest then head out in the morning.”
“Where?” Daniel threw out his hands. “This isn’t worth it. We are not going to find someone who will take me in! They hate us. We are not like them. We live in lodges built out of trees! Caves. During the summer I don’t even think we live indoors!”
“We live like the old waves.” The wolf snapped back. “Daniel I promised your Alpha to see you inside another pack. He wants you to be mated.”
“How many dominates are bigger than a 6’4 submissive, huh?”
“Plenty,” another wolf growled. “Just because are packs are tall doesn’t mean the state packs are shorter.”
Daniel growled as he jerked up the bag on the floor. “I just don’t see the point in searching. My mate doesn’t exist.”
“Daniel come on man. Don’t give up.” Morgan stopped him from moving. “I know it’s hard. But you’re not alone. Two packs are supporting you. I’m not leaving until you have your guy.”
Daniel’s head fell, “Morgan I don’t know if I can keep doing this.”
“I can and I’m not stopping until we find your mate.” Morgan patted the back of his head. “Now let’s get some sleep.”
“Okay,” Daniel agreed with this. Sleep did sound good.
By morning, the group of werewolves had found out that sleeping on the beds was uncomfortable. They were use to the leather cots the women made for the men. The animal skins, the cool breeze than blew over the lodges. All of them ended up naked and stretched out on the floor with the heater off.
“These city wolves are crazy.” Morgan grumbled as he stumbled into the bathroom. “But then again, I do like the shower!”
All the wolves laughed once they heard the water turn on. Daniel pushed passed the dominates beating them into the bathroom. Luckily they came to agreement during the first overnight stop. Just don’t look out of the shower before asking.
“City wolves aren’t so bad.” Darrell winked at him as he walked out of the bathroom.
“Yeah, I can handle the change. It’s just…what if he doesn’t exist?” Daniel felt the pang of sorrow hit his chest.
“Oh he doesn’t exist because you’re not existing.” Cody threw a shirt over his head. “Remember what we are taught Daniel. Your mate only exist because of you. Once living creature can not survive without the other. He’s out there, and you will find him. I promise.”
Daniel nodded. He couldn’t deny the admiration for these guys. They had been nothing but supportive of him. Each had their own way of picking on him. None of it was harmful. It was like they thought of him as a little brother.
A light tap came from the door, causing each wolf to freeze. Darrell moved towards the window, pulled back the curtain and peeked outside. A woman stood with a bag of groceries in her hand.
“Oh come on, I know you’re in there. Now open the damn door.”
“Who the hell is that?” Daniel growled. He was not liking her demanding tone.
Darrell popped open the door to see what the woman wanted. Her eyes filled with amusement as her lips turned into a smile. Pushing the bag into his hands, she winked. She had darker skin than him, brown eyes and somewhat curly hair.
“My Alpha told me to give that to you.”
“Huh? Thanks?” Darrell straightened up. “Who are you?”
“No need with names. We won’t see each other again. You want to go towards the south. There are a few packs down south that have mated males. I would start with Wilde pack. They know who has more unmated males than anyone. If they can’t help you, they’ll know who can. Inside the bag is directions.”
“Who is your Alpha?”
“Oh that doesn’t matter all that matter is, you are going to get where you are going.” She winkled at him and walked away. “Be careful too, there’s a war going on. Stay away from a man name Savage. You see him, run the other way. He’ll kill the gay wolf.”
“What? Why?” Daniel stuck out his head, “What did I do?”
“You exist. You’re unnatural to him.”
“Just freaking perfect! Like this isn’t hard enough. Now I have to worry about wolves killing me because I’m gay? Gee, thanks so much.” Daniel snatched the bag from Darrell and poured the containments out on the bed.
“The world just can’t leave me alone can it?”
“Not today, today you look so cute when you pout.” Trent winked at him.
“Don’t start. Just because I’m gay doesn’t mean I’m attracted to straight guys. And no, I’m not going to tell you if you’re hot or not. Plus!” Daniel threw a muffin at Trent, “you are just as nasty as the next guy who wants a bi-curiosity kiss or feel.”
“Whoa, who’s trying to kiss my best bud?” Morgan came out of the bathroom. “Cody it was you wasn’t?”
Laughter boomed inside the small motel room. Cody winked at Daniel causing his cheeks to go red. Daniel felt a ball of guilt when it came to Cody. The wolf lost his mate moments after finding her. A weak human shell, the wolf was too strong for her to exist with. Leaving the wolf too weak.
Cody said that he’s okay with it. There wasn’t much time to bond with his mate. No connection was truly made. The man was free to choice his mate. Except one little problem, he was asexual. Cody loved the intelligence of the beast and human. No matter if they were man or woman. He had confess that being with a man wasn’t off the block. If the right person came along and stole his heart, anything was possible.
“Well let’s go. The she-wolf said we should head South.”
South it was. Daniel swallowed nervously. “Who’s Savage?”
“I have no idea,” Darrell answered. “I’m pretty sure we will find out.”
Daniel seriously didn’t like that answer. He was now officially okay with going back home and not finding a mate. War? No thank you, he’ll hang out with Morgan and chase the other subs.
“Hey, don’t worry. We’ll be there to protect you.” Cody’s breathe fell over his ear. Goosebumps filled his arms and neck. The vibrations from the dominates chuckle against his back felt good.
“Stop flirting with the sub and come alone. We have some traveling to do.” Trent pushed Cody in the shoulder.
Turning around, Daniel realized that Cody was a couple of inches taller than him. Which is exactly what he wanted in a guy. Someone taller than him. Hiding his smile, Cody rubbed his back making the hormones rocket. All the wolves stopped and looked over at them.
“Should we head home and let the Alpha’s know you’ve claimed the boy?” Darrell asked.
“No, Daniel has a right to find his mate. If he doesn’t then I will.”
“What?” Daniel was surprised to hear this. Flirting was one thing, claiming was a complete different ball game.
“You haven’t noticed that Cody has a thing for you?” Morgan laughed at him.
Throwing a bottle of milk at his head, Morgan rolled his eyes. “Bring it on sub, I think I can handle your temper.”
“I do not have a temper, I have a tenancy to make my point known.”
“It’s okay, I like it.” Cody whispered heavily into his ear. “It’s hot.”
“Hmm?” Daniel showed his confusion.
“I find people hot, beautiful. Just a sexual relationship is out of the question. I’ve tried. It doesn’t nothing for me or my beast. We enjoy the relationship of the person. I’m able to hold a romantic relationship.”
Daniel nodded. He knew what asexual was, it was just a little confusing. A mate that wouldn’t enjoy the fun of being a wolf. Could he really do that? Maybe but right now, they were leaving to find his mate.
Grumbling and cussing his way down the highway, Kagen hated the fact that the old woman was still barking orders from the damn grave. Liz had her fingers playing in everyone’s life more than he liked to admit. Between her and Tibitha he was sick of women. Those two could drive anyone insane just by opening their mouths. If he heard the whine of Tibitha’s ‘Kagen please’ he was going to go on a killing spree.
Is it possible to leave a man alone? Allow his heart to stop aching for the next blow comes along? Apparently not, apparently these two women keep thrusting the knife deeper and deeper into his chest without mercy.
Having no idea why is was actually doing what they were wanting him to do. He hit the accelerator in anger. There was no telling how this will play out. Adjusting the his butt in the seat, the pain in his ribs wasn’t letting up today. Maybe he shouldn’t have taken his anger out on the local area. Burning down his house was a low blow. He could picture it, Lorraine smiling that wicked smile of hers as she lit the match that started the fire. The coven knew of him murdering the council members but so far couldn’t prove a damn thing. Just to add salt to his wound, Lorraine sent word that he killed wolves. Now hunted by two different communities was giving on his nerves.
Here he is going to drop off information to a pack full of werewolves. How smart was this plan? In his book, one of the dumbest. The Alpha would have no choice but to send him packing to the Council Society. Where he would probably find his death waiting on him. The Elders don’t take too kindly to those who break the rules. Especially when someone kills more than one member of two communities.
Stopping off at the edge of the town, Kagen allowed his head to drop to the steering wheel. This was it, he was here to deliver the message. The bag on the seat was for the Alpha. His heart cringed at the very thought of him being there with his wolf mate. Time wasn’t known to be kind or healing. All it did was remind him that he was alone. That those around him were meant to do greater things. He was left alone once again. His family spat at him or damned him for existing.
A growl vibrated his chest. The beast was growing stronger inside of him. Kagen could feel him more and more each day. The full moon was growing closer. Shifting for the first time didn’t scare him at all. What scared him was the fact that he would be a rogue through and through. He felt the anger of the beast, it’s destructive nature. A dark orb loomed over the light within. The beast was strong, determined, dangerous. Noticing the change within him, he kept his mouth shut more. Finally the old man picked up on it. Angus told him to run never to return. Tibitha sent a care package for him and that damn son of hers.
“Why me?” Kagen straightened up. “Why me? Why can’t the world just leave me the hell alone?”
Seizing the opportunity he stepped out of the car and headed towards the woods. Hiding between the trees, his allowed his body to feel the release of being inside a car for hours without stopping. Lying his arm against the tree once his pants was zipped up, Kagen thought about turning around and leaving. There was nothing truly keeping him from going to the pack and handing over what Liz wanted him to.
Snarls and snaps off in a distance caused him to flip around. Cocking his head to the side he listened. There was heavy footfalls coming beyond the trees. A human scream lit the air. Kagen took off running towards the direction of the scream. His arm pumped as his feet carried him faster. A wolf was thrown over the brushes and passed his side. Dodging the light grey wolf, he thought twice about going through the trees. Another scream lit the air, sending him directly back to running full force. It was a woman screaming, maybe a wolf maybe not. He couldn’t risk a human getting hurt by a supernatural creature. Breaking through the barrier, Kagen seen a massive dark brown wolf baring down on a grey small wolf. She was whimpering and baby her arm.
Charging ahead he drew out his blade. The wolf turned around to meet the on coming human. Swinging, he planted the blade into the wolf’s neck, twisted and ripped down. From the corner of his eye, he saw a small light grey wolf attend to the wolf on the ground.
“Run!” the female voice
The two wolves on the ground froze at the sight of another wolf running towards them. Kagen blocked the view from the wolves. Preparing his blades, he heard the wolves whimper away. From the side another grey wolf charged towards the wolf coming towards him. The wolf was smaller, probably a female by the size. Ramming her head into the side of the wolf, she was able to knock him off balance enough he had to stop. Kagen charged.
“Go!” He slammed down the blade into the wolf’s shoulder. “Now!” The wolf reared up his head, knocking Kagen backwards. Kicking his boot, the blade shot out. Kicking up towards the wolf, the wolf dodged his leg in a snarl. The littler wolf took off. Catching the sight of blood running down the wolf’s side. She was injured, probably protecting the others.
Flipping himself up, he prepared for another fight with a wolf. Hiding the pain that bolted up through his ribs, his face remained stone cold hard. The wolf snarled and growled. Kagen flipped out a small vile of Wolf’s Bane. Behind his back he poured it over the blade.
“Daddy!” Amber ran into the pack house. Snatching a towel off the counter has she went. “DADDY!” As she ran towards the Alpha, wolves moved out of her way. “Daddy!”
“Amber?” Alpha Blackwood came running out of the room. Blood hit his nose.
“Daddy, come with me. May and June are hurt. There’s this guy fighting a wolf. PLEASE!” Tears washed down her face. Pulling on his hand, the Alpha followed her to the backyard. She threw down the towel and shifted. She ran ahead of the Alpha.
Shifting, his Beta’s and the boys were right behind him. Followed up by Jalin and Dalson. They were going to keep an eye on their little brother who was seeking out with them. When it came to May and June, Langdon still felt guilty about not being able to do more. Vera followed them out the door to gather up the torn clothing. She worried more now, Amber was injured and their precious little ones.
A loud scream hit the air then a whine. The Alpha around the trees in time to see the dark hair man thrust the blade into the wolf’s neck and rip it out. Both man and beast went to the ground. Blood lit the air. Snarls echoed; causing the man to look up. Amber came through the other side shifted and block the human on the ground.
“Daddy he saved us!” She turned around to attend to the man’s wounds. He pushed her away. Her gasped as his hand burned.
“Wolf’s Bane,” he chocked out.
“Daddy he’s hands are covered in Wolf’s Bane.”
Langdon saw who it was and rushed over. Shifting, he went down to Kagen, pulled at his shirt and smell. Ripping it off he began to wrapped his hands inside the shirt. Reaching over, he began licking the wounds.
“Langdon!” Zero yelled.
“This is Kagen!” Langdon yelled back. “Tatom’s ex.”
Dalson growled and snapped his teeth towards the human.
“Knock it off, he saved Amber and the girls!” Langdon screamed at him. “Where’s your car?” From the many stories Tatom had told and what he felt when they were at the motel. He learned very quickly that Kagen loves his car.
“The road.”
“I need help, he’s car is on the road.” Langdon pulled him up. Amber took a hold of one arm, draped it around her shoulders.
“Like hell,” Zero snatched Kagen’s arm away from Langdon and draped it around his shoulders. “He has Wolf’s Bane on his hands. Get back Amber.” Zero began walking with Kagen.
Running ahead, Langdon went to search for his car. Couldn’t be too far, the road was just up ahead. Seeing the black slick body, Langdon hurried to the edge of the woods. Peering out, he saw no one was at least in sight. Hurrying over he ran around to the drivers side. Luckily the driver door was left unlocked. Zero came out of the woods with a hissing Kagen. Moving all the bags around to make room for Kagen and Amber in the backseat. Instinctively he knew Zero wouldn’t let him seat in the backseat with Kagen and Amber. Amber ran ahead and jumped into the backseat. Sliding a very sore injured man into the backseat. Langdon jumped into the passenger side. Zero hurried over and jumped into the driver seat while his mate fished out the keys from Kagen’s pocket.
“Alpha, May and June are fine. They are already healing.”
“And Kagen?” Alpha Blackwood cleared his throat.
“Won’t let me touch him. Tatom talked him into cleaning up in the bathroom. I think Zero took him to his room.”
“Amber,”
“Yes daddy, I’m here.” She hurried over, stood up on her tip toes and kissed his cheek. “Sorry daddy, I was scared for May and June. I knew where they were.”
“Why were you in the woods to begin with?”
“We weren’t. We were walking on the sidewalk.” Amber was a little nervous about what her father would do. She proceed when she saw that he was waiting. “We were going over to Lacy’s house when this wolf came up behind us. I had no choice but to shift, he took a hold of June. May tried calling but…her mate.” Amber blew out a breath, “Our stuff should be at the edge of 3rd street.”
“I’ll send Ivan.”
“I heard. Mind if I nose around?”
“With pleasure.” The Alpha growled.
His little girl was hurt, injured by these fools thinking they could get away from him. This was his territory and no one was going to think for one minute attacking his daughter would not receive any type of repercussions. Toping his anger was going after May and June. Those two are little trouble marker but only in fun. They would do whatever they could do for this pack. No man nor woman should ever lay a harmful hand upon them. Or his daughter. Picking up his daughter, he swung her around on his back. Amber giggled, she hadn’t had a piggy back ride in a few years. Squeezing her arms around his neck, she kissed his cheek.
“You’re the best daddy.”
“Langdon,” Zero slapped the thumb away from Langdon’s mouth. He had gnawing on it since Dalson and Kagen had a few words earlier.
“I can’t help it. Dalson didn’t have a right to snap at Kagen that way.”
“He growled at Tatom.”
“Would you want Shelby around if she broke your heart and stood with her mate?”
Pulling Langdon over to his lap, he kissed his sweet lips. “Point made. And before you start, the man did save my daughter.”
“May and June too.” Langdon smiled. “I wonder why he’s here though? His car was packed full of stuff.”
“Good question.”
A knock came from the door, Zero yelled come in. Jalin popped his head in with a teasing smile. “Hey guys, Alpha wants to see Kagen.”
“Tell him I’ll be right there.” Kagen came out of the bathroom freshly showered and bandaged up. Throwing on his shirt, he snatched up the bag Langdon grabbed for him. “I need to get something from the car before I see him though. It’s a package that I was asked to deliver.”
“Need any help?” Langdon asked.
“Thanks but I got it.” Kagen gave a half of a smile.
Zero caught onto something that no one else had picked up on. There was a hidden admiration between Langdon and Kagen. Telling them to go on, he had to see about something before him and Langdon went down. Kagen nodded towards the wolves on the bed. Turning to Jalin, he smiled.
“What?”
“Nothing.” Jalin laughed. “Sorry, in a mood I guess.”
“Whatever,” Kagen pushed passed the wolf.
“Hey?” Langdon was confused.
“Dalson actually likes the guy.” Jalin stepped in quickly shut the door and began to laugh. “He’s hated him because of Tatom, now that his met him. Dalson likes the guy.” Zero joined Jalin in the laughter. Langdon tried to be polite and allow just a smile but the two men in the room with him made it very hard not to laugh.
Once Jalin had left the room, Zero rubbed Langdon’s back. Blowing out a breath, he made his mate look at him. Langdon knew something was up by the tense look in his favorite blue’s.
“Why are you fond of Kagen?”
Tensing up his muscles, Langdon dropped his head. This wasn’t what he was expecting to come out of Zero’s mouth. Refusing to go against the promise he made, he shook his head.
“Don’t make me. I promised. Don’t make me break the promise I had made. Please Zero?”
“You know Kagen?”
“Somewhat. He hates that he’s here. Could you just give him a break? Having Tatom close to him only hurt him more.”
“I can see it in his eyes.” Zero’s voice softened. “I’ll drop it for now. You can’t keep secrets from me.”
“I made a promise. If I didn’t promise, I would tell you. I’ll ask if I can just at least tell you in confidence that you will keep the secret.” Langdon sent pleading eyes towards his mate.
“Okay, okay. Don’t look at me like that.” Zero rolled his eyes.
Downstairs the Damned One had approached Kagen who was engrossed in fingering his fur. Words like ‘amazing’, ‘so beautiful’ ‘this is crazy’, would come out with a excited breath. If no one knew better Cornelius was holding a amusing expression upon his face. He allowed Kagen full excess to the markings under his fur.
“He likes you,” Jace giggled.
“Cornelius is not a dog, do not speak of him like that.” Kagen’s voice was firm.
“I didn’t mean it like that.” Jace realized how his words sounded. “I’m sorry Cornelius. I was just trying to tell him that you enjoyed his company.”
“I am perfectly aware that he finds me amusing.” Kagen smiled up at the wolf. “There are scars over the markings. It will take more time to discover what they actually are. But I’m up for the challenge if you are.”
Cornelius nodded his massive head. Entering the room Alpha Blackwood told everyone to take a seat. Before Kagen could walk away from anyone, Main gripped a hold of his arm. Pulled him back to his chest and took a long hard breath in. Kagen’s shoulders fell, there went that plan. Ivan came in carrying the girls belongings. Seeing what Main was doing, he walked straight over.
“Main?”
“Enough!” Kagen jerked his body away from the wolves. Turning around looked at both of them, “Kill me now or leave me alone.”
Confusion fell over Main as his statement sunk in.
“I’m of magical bloodline. It’s against the rules. Kill me now or leave me alone.”
“Leave him alone.” Ivan stated. “I think the Alpha would agree. He saved Amber.”
Being the last ones in the door, Ivan apologized to the Alpha. Kagen was answering a question for them. Nathanial looked over to see the expression upon the War wolves faces. They were hiding something, not from him from the pack. Kagen stood slightly away from everyone allowing space between the wolves and him.
“What’s wrong human? Scared?” Dalson smiled in a teasing voice.
“Why would I be scared? All I see our little puppies.” Kagen shot right back.
“I’ll show you puppy.”
“I got some balls you can play with.” Kagen countered.
“Would you two knock it off?” Tatom snapped.
Jalin’s laughter was heard. Tell Dalson that he knew what was up between the two. Both hated each other because of Tatom, upon meeting, they found out they liked each other.
“Kagen a pleasure.” Will spoke up to help ease the somewhat tension in the room.
“Oh hell, you’re in the wrong pack. Why so far away from home?”
“I missed my son.” Will rubbed Jace’s back.
“David,” Kagen took three steps and held out his hand towards David. David stood up and shook it. Next Will stood up.
“How’s it been?”
“Could be better.” Kagen answered honestly. “The coven is starting to look into what happened before. I had the bag out in the car. Was going to drop it by, but seeing that you are here.”
“More than willing.” David answered.
“What happened?” Jace and Tatom both asked together.
Kagen nodded and went back to where he was standing before. David and Will took their seats again. Seeing that the question was going to go unanswered by the three men. No one pushed the issue as of right now.
“First I would like to thank you for saving my daughter and the girls. All three girls are treasured among this pack. Please take a seat.” Alpha Blackwood held out his hand towards the empty chair in the room.
All of a sudden June ran up to him and threw her arms round his chest. Kagen hissed and cursed at the pain at that rippled through out his chest. Ivan and Main jumped into action. Ripping June off of Kagen as a massive growl thundered from deep within his chest. His fist struck down, hitting Main directly in the back. Pushing off his with feet swayed Ivan back a little. The Alpha jumped up to help, wolves moved out of the way as Kagen fought the pain. Langdon hurried over, placed a hand upon Kagen’s arm and sent peaceful relaxing vibes through his body. The pain went away almost immediately. Inhaling a deep breath, he relaxed against Ivan and the Alpha. His chest heavy in deep rugged breaths.
“Shhh….it”
“Let Langdon take the pain away.”
“Loosen up the grip will ya?” Ivan and the Alpha both relaxed their arms.
The room remained silent allowing all to settle down. Kagen nodded towards Langdon once he was alright and had his bearings back. Langdon let go but remained close to him. Alpha Blackwood ordered his wolves to let go of the not so human any more. Kagen straightened up, wiped his face.
“Thanks, sorry.”
“We heard you were injured by a wolf.” The Alpha stated. “Tibitha was here when it happened.”
He nodded.
“That wasn’t a human growl. It was a changing bite, wasn’t it?”
Wiping his face again, he looked the Alpha in the eyes. “A rogue.”
Daren slipped out a couple of cusses.
“Natural or is there control?” The Alpha gripped him lightly around the midsection. Inhaled deep breaths at his neck and shoulder.
“Natural. I feel the dark edge.” Kagen swallowed, “I think it might have been a old War wolf. Not for sure though.”
“Ivan, I need you to sense him.”
Ivan stepped forward, bent down towards the wound. Smelling through the shirt wasn’t good enough. Pushing up the shirt, he sliced the bandage with a claw like fingernail. As the bandage fell passed the injury gasp was heard. Tatom’s voice chocked out, “Kagen!” Stitching was still heavily in place. The skin was deeply black and blue, even after all this time it should have lightened up a bit.
“Damn,” Ivan paused. “You survived?”
“I’m stubborn that way.”
“How far does it go?”
“My bone was sticking out, goes around to my back.”
The Alpha’s head dropped down. “Ivan smell.” He bent down and began smelling his midsection. With a good sense of what wolf now inhabited the human, they straightened up.
“Well it was once a War wolf that went rogue. Sorry man.” Ivan clapped his shoulder. “But not all rogues are wild and dangerous.”
“Unfortunately I think this one might be.” Kagen frowned. Straightening out his shirt he turned towards the Alpha. “Rules state that you have to do what you have to do.”
“Seeing that you saved my daughter and two more members of my pack. We are in your debt. No one is to touch this man right here. He is free to leave the territory unharmed.”
The pack sounded, “Yes Alpha.”
“What? Why?” Langdon was confused. “Tatom?”
“I’m of magical bloodline. The coven doesn’t care less that I hold no magic.”
Once June apologized and Kagen accepted with a soft smile. Seats were taken again. The Alpha asked why he was in the territory to begin with. Throwing of a small bag of books and items, Kagen began to speak.
“Tibitha and Liz, that’s why I’m here.”
“My mom? I can’t get a hold of her.”
“Calm down,” Kagen spoke to him but never looked over. “Tibitha is fine. Angus and Malorqy are with her.”
“Angus? High Priest Angus?”
“No longer High Priest, he’s been over thrown.” Wiping his face, a glass of clear liquid entered his vision. Langdon smiled down, seizing the glass Kagen took a drink. “Thanks man.”
“Welcome.” Langdon rejoined Zero who wasn’t looking too happy.
“Jes…..us.” Kagen groaned. “Liz had left Tibitha a list of things to do. Dropping off that information to you was one of them. There is a book of old stories, legends written by wolves in that bag. She is hoping that the knowledge can help you in this time of War. Tibitha had sent Tatom more herb and roots, in hopes this will help keep him stocked.
“The war is spilling over into the covens. The first attack wasn’t on the coven directly. It was on Langdon. By taking him set everything in motion. While they had Langdon, it allowed the coven to breech other members. Whisper that those who believe war is coming shall be punished.
“Tibitha was imprisoned for a short time. Angus was over thrown. Malory is from an old ancient coven that went their separate ways years ago. He is trying to help. Apparently this war was written hundreds of years ago. A witch had seen it, however, that information was lost.
“I translated what I could in the time I had. The coven has been compromised. Savage made a deal with Lorraine. She is working with the new High Priest. Whatever his name is. And no I don’t care to know.
“Once we figured out that it was a changing bite, I basically ran. Angus, Malory and Tibitha is still gathering up people who believe we are in a war. Don’t be too surprised if those three witches appear on your doorstep. Tibitha is wanted. Really don’t know her crime. Some BS they made up. They are using Tatom just to add to the list they already have.
“Malory is trying to gather up any information there is on Langdon. Apparently when he was little, witches would speak to him out on the streets. Wrote crap down. I stole what I could. It’s in the bag. Any more and I will send it your way.”
The Alpha pulled out an old leather bound book. The pages had turned yellow, some were torn. The book spoke of aging. Years of being read and written in.
“Honestly I can’t make some of this out.”
“Kagen can.” Tatom offered.
“The hell I can.”
“Kagen, I know you hate me. I’m sorry. But we need you. You are the only one who can figure out the old werewolf language. Some of the wolves has never heard of it before. Years have passed since it was used. If you just can stay around for a little bit, it would pack. Help the Alpha. I can’t read that for him. If he can’t make it out, we’re screwed.”
“You don’t get it!” Kagen growled, Main placed a hand on his shoulder. “I can’t stay. The coven is hunting me. Savage is hunting me. By me staying here I’m putting this pack at more risk.”
“I can fight the coven, Savage is hunting us all.” Tatom shot right back.
“You don’t get it! Alpha Blackwood should kill me now! He has very right to!” Main squeezed his shoulder to keep him planted in his seat. The tension rose quickly out of the changing human-wolf.
“His entering the last stage Alpha.”
“I sense that.” Nathanial knew they needed help. He had read the werewolf language years ago, but this was old old language. It would take him longer. “Why don’t you at least stay until the shifting is complete. Then Main and Ivan will see you away safely.”
“I can’t.”
“Yes you can!” Tatom screamed, “Don’t be an ass because you’re pissed off at me.”
“I killed wolves! I killed the council!” Kagen shot up out of his seat and lunged at Tatom. Dalson growled as he blocked the man from his mate. The Alpha locked his arms around Kagen and held on.
“Calm!”
Kagen growled at the Alpha. Ivan jumped over with Jimmy and Main. As Kagen fought the anger running through his body. Jalin snapped towards the other wolves. Jace and Langdon quickly began working with each other. Slipping passed the wolves, Langdon tried to touch Kagen again. He wasn’t allowing it. One wrong step of the foot sent the men towards the floor. Knocking the wind out of the changing human. Giving Langdon the chance to calm down the pack on the floor. Jace had squeezed himself to his mate’s chest in hopes Jalin wouldn’t throw him away.
“Tatom you can’t be aggressive towards him right now. Having Dalson’s defensive go up and Jalin’s it’s only going to make matters worse.” Zero used the firm Alpha voice. “Jalin, Dalson calm down!” The Alpha power poured out of him. The room felt the urge to become afraid. Zero was pulling rank in more than one way. “This is what can happen when a human is changed. Kagen is the worse case scenario. His beast is a rogue of natural means. Meaning dangerous.”
Cornelius came in growling and pushing his way up to Kagen who laid on the floor under and top of wolves. He nipped at Kagen’s shoulder causing the man to look up. Butting heads with him, he wormed in way into the pack. Laying his head on Kagen’s chest, he fell silent.
“Maybe Cornelius is correct. Kagen beast is coming in fully. He’s able to connect with the human. Cornelius will you stay with him?” Nathanial asked. Receiving a nod, he began ordering each wolf to back off slowly. No sudden movements, it might set Kagen off again. The Alpha was the last to let go. Standing up, Cornelius slid his body down further allowing Kagen to sit up.
“Sorry, I didn’t mean to take my anger out on you.” He glanced up at Tatom who sat eyed wide and slightly disturbed.
“I would if I was in your shoes.”
The pack turned to look at Dalson who had calmed down. The smoke hovered above his head as it disappeared.
“Don’t look at me like that. You don’t understand what’s it’s like. Having a beast inside of you raging with power and whatever else it wants. You are the last human emotion, the hatred he feels is the beast harboring it. Using it, powering it. War wolves and Rogues are not that far apart from each other. The only difference is we can share our souls with an Alpha. He won’t be able to. Meaning the beast can take over and keep control.
“Kagen has a long way before he will be straightened out. If he ever will be. The bite mark does more than change a person, it chances the soul. Tears at it. Gnaws at it. Shifts it. Jalin and I know a bit more about it than the normal War wolves. Ours are more like Kagen than what people think. We can feel it better because how close we are to his beast. Ivan, Jimmy, Main.” Dalson wiped his face, “Cornelius. His beast is using what happened between you two more than Kagen is. The man has somewhat moved on, the beast is using what he turned into hatred.”
Dalson shifted in his seat, “Babe, I can see how much he loved you. He hasn’t looked at you but once. I can’t damn the man for being human. Living among the humans has taught me a lot. Don’t like the ways I’m a wolf through and through. However, all the crap Kagen’s been dealing with and coming here. It’s his beast using anything he can get.
“Maybe you staying here isn’t such a bad idea. I mean, until you’re under control. I feel him, he’s brutally dangerous. Maybe too dangerous.”
“Why are you helping?” Kagen snapped towards him.
“I’m not heartless. I hate that Tatom loved you, but he’s mine now. You need help. Changing on your own isn’t a good thing. Especially since you’re a Rogue. We can help you. Jace is a spirit wolf, he can help teach you to control him. Even Jalin and I can help. Like I said, we’re closer to you than Ivan or the others.”
“We’ll see.” Kagen blew out a breath.
“Could I ask what you meant by killing the council?” Tatom swallowed. “That’s if you’re up to talking about it.”
His eyes went directly towards Langdon, who whimpered. Zero tucked his arm around his mate to protect. “I didn’t say anything, I promised. I wouldn’t even tell Zero.” The words came out in whines.
“It’s okay, I opened my big mouth.” Shifting his body on the floor, Cornelius moved with him, allowing only inches between them. “Tibitha told me about the coven taking Langdon, she begged me for help. I told her no but I couldn’t allow the Empathy to die. I’m the only who found and freed Langdon. They had it scheduled to kill Langdon that night. I killed Savage’s wolves and three members of the council. I called some guy named Max the spoke to Zero. They don’t have solid evidence that I kill the council or the wolves. They know it was me, but can’t prove it. I’m wanted by the witches council and Savage.
“When Tibitha was imprisoned, I freed her. We met up with Angus and Malory. We have been trying to do what we can. The war is spreading, it’s hit over the big pond. Savage is taken this across the globe. No one can figure out why.
“Just yesterday I heard from a witch who is on our side that Canada packs are down here for something. They are searching packs. A group of five I believe. Everyone that is involved can not figure out what Savage’s plan is.
“So I guess do what you must. I think I need a good nights rest, I’m tired of fighting for a moment. My body is doing nothing but aching. My mind is so full I can sleep because of it. So if you need to kill me, just do it quickly.”
For once since they first seen Kagen, he truly looked defeated. The bags under his eyes had shown clearly for a change. His face was pale, his skin looked weakened along with his humanity.
“We’ll talk. For now rest.” Nathanial knew he could justify in killing the changing yet Tibitha and Tatom both said he was a good asset to have. Having a rogue might not be such a bad thing either. With a little guidance and help, they could help keep his beast under control. Plus, he saved Langdon. His son’s mate, the Empathy. That couldn’t be overlooked.
Dinner was served, the pack stayed away from the War wolves and Kagen. Langdon had given him a hug in a thank you for coming and putting up with the pack. Zero shook his hand in a thank you for saving his mate. Cornelius stayed very close to the guess in protecting him and the pack. Once in a while, Kagen’s hand would swipe across a marking. All could tell this was his new train of thought. No one said anything, the man needed a new distraction.
The pack sat around listening to all the information that was being shared by the guess and the wolves. Nathanial and his Beta’s thumbed through the books that was given to him. Until Daren asked a simple question that sent Kagen deep into thought. Ripping the book away from the man he studied the scripture.
His head fell down, his shoulders sagged. Wiping a hand through his hair he looked over towards Tatom. “The legend of the ancients.”
“The ancient wolves?” Tatom jumped up and looked over his arm at the scripture. “I always like that story.” Dalson pulled him back over when he heard Kagen growl. Quickly Tatom apologized to both men.
Closing his eyes, this is what he had been missing the whole time. It was right before him and he over looked the obvious.
“You’re not getting it Tatom, look at the wolves in this room.”
Tatom studied each wolf that was in the room. Will and David moved closer to get a good eye view. Catching his eye, Tatom looked at Will. Studied him. Flinging his head around to Dalson who was studying his actions. Realization hit him hard. Jumping away from Dalson, Dalson growled and gripped a hold of his mate.
“Tatom what the hell?” Questioning the fright upon his face.
“Tatom answer him,” the Alpha growled. “What is going on?”
Swallowing Kagen answered, “Years ago a legend was written about a small pack of wolves. The Ancients. They were to believed to be the first of your kind, our kind.” Kagen had to get use to saying it. “They held the most power. Feared by many, witches, vampires, shape-shifters, and human. Some worshiped them, some never believe they existed.
“A war broke out so grand, it killed off thousands of humans. Wiped out half the covens. Almost killed off the werewolf community altogether. The legends stays that when they return the war is happening again. A war so grand that the world can be destroyed. Not only will the werewolves suffer, the human population as well.” He took a breather, Amber spoke up in a nervous tone.
“What does that have to do with us?”
Kagen looked over, the she-wolf was almost healed fully. “The Ancients were known to be the most powerful of their kind. Three ultimate fighting wolves. Two to help keep them at bay; only one of them was truly strong enough to control the other four.” Stepping towards the Alpha, he handed the book back to him. Pointing as he spoke. “They’ve gathered in your pack for a reason Alpha. You are missing one wolf. “Fire.” He pointed at the symbol that stood for Fire. “Spirit,” pointing at the Spirit symbol. “Rage,” again pointing at the Rage symbol. “The Empathy.” Pointing to the center one. “Each surround the Empathy for he is truly the strongest out of all five. Only he can control the others. The Spirit wolf helps yet the Spirit wolf is a War wolf himself. You are missing the three piece that completes the fighters. Destruction.
“The three ultimate wolves. Rage, Fire, and Destruction are known to tear through packs. Kill anything in their path. The Spirit wolf helps the energy, stays connected to the Empathy. Think of a vassal, the Spirit wolf acts as a channeling vassal for the Empathy. The Empathy can push emotion through the Spirit wolf to help control the others. Yet the Spirit wolf is a fighter himself. A weaker one, but a fighter.
“What it states is you take out the Empathy you unleash the control of the others. They began killing anything and everything in their path.” Pointing at the Alpha, “You have four of those wolves in your pack right now.” Pointing to the wolves off to the side. “They choice a pack, and for whatever reason they chose this pack. There is something that brought them here.”
“What?” The Alpha knew of the story of the ancients but didn’t understand what Kagen was now saying.
“The Ancients have never had a human body before. This is their first time as humans. Something about those humans drew them in. Allowing them to choice them as the human.” Kagen shook his head, “I can’t explain everything, I don’t have all my stuff.”
The Alpha looked over at the wolves sitting as proud as can be. His son was studying his mate, who stared right back with a hidden expression. “Is it true?” Zero whispered. Yet the pack was silent enough to hear.
“Got me, my beast is silent.” Langdon whispered back. “He knows something but won’t tell me.” Looking at his brothers, they all three shrugged their shoulders.
Before silence could take over the room, Alpha Blackwood asked how they could find out about the five wolf. If his story was true.
“I have no idea.” Kagen sat down on the floor. “Honestly it’s a legend, but something tells me the old bat handed that book of mine over for a reason.” He gave a light growl.
“That’s where it went? Liz had it?” Tatom laughed into Dalson arm. “You searched for that for months.”
Kagen flipped out his hands and rolled his eyes. “Tell me about it.”
The Alpha studied the wolves beside his son. Langdon had told Zero that his beast was keeping a secret and wouldn’t share. Maybe this is what the beast is hiding from the human.
“Any suggestions on finding him?”
“You have Langdon. He’s called them for them to gather here in the pack.”
Before questions were asked, Langdon stated he didn’t know. Tatom jerked up in his seat with his eyes wide and a smile. “You said Liz sent you?”
“And that damn mother of yours.” Kagen was too busy studying Cornelius’s markings to be paying attention to the conversation now.
“Alpha, I believe I know how to find the fifth wolf. Liz might be crazy but she knows her stuff. Not only did she send information, she sent you the very person who can help find out information.” Tatom stared right down at Kagen who had completely checked out of the conversation. He had engrossed himself in working on Cornelius’s markings. Unaware that faith had brought him into the pack not as a guess as a full member. (If you are here, Book 2 is up.)
