Aiden's P. O. V
I sighed and stared up at my bedroom ceiling, my thoughts preoccupied with the one person who I will never be able to gain forgiveness from, the person who hates me from the bottom of his heart: Nathan.
When he had showed up, I couldn't believe my eyes, but who would have thought he would have changed so much. He went from a small, helplessly cute kid, to some kind of fashion model, even though he's not really a model, he just looks like he could be one, it was shocking really, the difference from then and now.
His personality was colder now too, he seemed more distant, detached from those around him, as if he was a spectator watching life pass by and never hitting the button that will allow him to become an existence in this world.
I still remember when I first saw him again after so long. How could I forget, our reunion was unforgettable. Let's just say it packed quite a punch. I laughed quietly to myself at my inside joke, already feeling the memories of that evening unfolding, before Zack was shot, before everything went to hell...
I yawned tiredly and stretched like a cat, my arms reaching out above my head and rested my cheek against the surface of my cool desk as I waited for the teacher to arrive. He was running late like usual, so it was no surprise to me or anyone in the classroom for that matter when the bell rang for everyone to be in their classes and he was not here to teach us.
Even since the beginning of the school year he's been like this, so to pass the boredom I took out my phone and started texting my friends back and forth. As I did so I could hear the whispering of girls as they gossiped about the latest news, and my ears perked at what I was hearing.
"They say we're having a new transfer student that's supposed to be starting school today," one whispered excitedly.
"Eh, really, is it a boy or a girl? I hope it's a boy," another one wished and I could practically picture the girl with her hands clasped, praying that it was a boy and hid a smirk of amusement from the imagery.
"If it is, I hope he's hot," came a typical response from a third girl that had me rolling my eyes in annoyance and focused on the task of replying to a text that my friend just sent me.
That was usually all girls worried about when it came to these sorts of things, the same thing happened when Zack had transferred over as well. Everyone made a big fuss as to what to expect from the new kid, whether or not he was going to cause trouble, or if he was a total player or something. Now the same thing was happening again.
Speaking of Zack made me think of Kyle. Thankfully he had forgiven me for what I did to him, beating him up that is, or well, being a part of him getting beaten up. I still, to this day, regretted all the pain I put him through just because I was using it as a way to delude myself.
I had made myself believe that I was homophobic and would bully Kyle all the time, when in reality, I was just like him: gay. When I had first found out that I liked guys, I thought I was abnormal, that it was just a mistake, there was no way I could be gay, and so I denied the signs and made myself believe otherwise.
Look how well that turned out, I ended up becoming a total asshole and losing who I really was in all the lies I tried to make myself believe in. Though now I was a changed man, hopefully. I still had my doubts on whether or not I would lapse back into my violent behavior, but I was taking it all one day at a time, which was really all I could do for now.
Anyways, back to my reminiscing. So finally, after twenty minutes of waiting for the teacher to show up he arrived looking like a mess and with words of apology and the same old excuses as to why he was late. He then went on with his prepared lecture and the period began to slowly pass by.
That's when he came in, the new transfer student.
My eyes were immediately drawn to him as he stepped in and I couldn't look away for even a second. He had a pale face, but not the sickly looking kind, that was angled and sharp, pronounced, with flowing black hair that covered one eye but was short all around and hung close. Just from a glance I could tell that if I ran my hands through his hair, it would no doubt feel silky smooth against my skin. His lips, which were the kind that every woman envied: full and red, were currently pulled downwards unhappily. He was also tall, slightly more than me, and lean.
At first I didn't recognize him, actually, it never crossed my mind as to why he felt so familiar to me, so I just shrugged it off as nothing and turned my attention back to the teacher, though with difficulty as he was kind of hard not to look at.
Murmurs broke out as the students assessed him and from the corner of my eye I could see the three girls who had been discussing his arrival earlier fan themselves and give each other excited looks at having their wish of him being hot granted, and yes, I admit, he was a sight to behold.
The guy briefly scanned the classroom before heading to the teacher and began talking to him in low tones and I couldn't help but shiver at the sound of his smooth voice that drifted my way, and again I had this weird feeling as if I knew him from somewhere, but had no idea as to where. When the two were done the guy came to stand at the front of the classroom.
The teacher introduced him as Nathan Fernandez and I thought the name suited him well. "Mr. Fernandez, go ahead and take the empty seat next to Aiden," Mr. Anderson motioned over to me. "Aiden, raise your hand so he knows where you are."
I did so and when Nathan's eyes landed on me they widened with recognition before narrowing with so much hate and rage that I was frozen in shock. I didn't know what to think as he made his way over to the empty table next to me, everyone's eyes following after him, and sat down without a word, making sure to look partly away from me so that I couldn't see his face clearly.
I glanced over at him, then quickly away, a frown working its way onto my face. Did he just look like he wanted to strangle me right then and there? I questioned. No, that can't be right, I must have seen it wrong, there's no way he could hate me already, right? I mean, I've never met the guy until now, so I must have just imagined that look.
Yeah, that's it; I convinced myself of and nodded my head in agreement, though I remained doubtful as Mr. Anderson began his lecturing again. I periodically looked over to Nathan and wondered if I should say hi, and decided to before I lost my nerve, which was rare for me. I wasn't usually this hesitant, but I must have been shaken up some when he gave me that look, if he did.
"Uh, hello there. I know the teacher already said this, but I'm Aiden," I said, turning to face him fully and put on a friendly smile even though I was unnerved by the way his eyes cut towards me sharply as soon as I opened my mouth.
And then, as if everything was just fine and dandy and he hadn't been looking at me earlier as if he was itching to kill me, he gave me a wide smile that left me breathless and sent butterflies fluttering through my stomach and I nearly scowled at the reaction.
What the hell was that? I questioned but didn't have time to dwell over it as Nathan spoke.
"Hello," he said simply and turned back to the front. I waited to see if he would say anything else but when he didn't I faced the front as well with a slight frown on my face and a feeling as if I had done something wrong.
Okay, I thought, not very talkative is he? Maybe he really does hate me, and I felt a pang of pain go through me from the knowledge that that was a possibility and my day seemed to get a whole lot more depressing.
I didn't even know why I cared so much that he might hate me, it's not like I wasn't used to that, a lot of people didn't like me because of my personality, or well, the front I put up of being an asshole to protect myself from prying people. I rather like keeping my weaknesses and worries to myself.
So why was it any different with Nathan?
For the rest of the period my mind was only occupied with trying to answer that one question, but with no luck whatsoever. So by the time the bell rang, and my frustration level was at its peak from continuously digging into my brain for some clues, I decided to confront Nathan about it myself.
So I waited outside the classroom door for Nathan to finish talking with the teacher and come outside. When he did I grabbed his hand in a death like grip and pulled him towards one of the permanently empty classrooms, murmuring the words, "Come with me," along the way.
He yelped in shock at my sudden appearance and stumbled after me, protesting the whole way and trying to pull free from my hand, but I wasn't going to let him get away. I opened the classroom door and hurried us through it before closing the door to enclose us in this private area.
"Let go," he hissed in anger and wrenched his wrist from my grip once we came to a stop inside the empty classroom. "What the hell is your problem?" He asked while rubbing his sore wrist and took a step away from me, putting some distance between us.
"Did I do something to piss you off earlier?" I asked, getting straight to the point.
"What?" He looked completely thrown off guard from my sudden question and took a minute before scowling my way in confused annoyance and answering. "What are you talking about?"
I frowned at his reaction. Perhaps I had misunderstood what I saw and he really hadn't acted that way towards me, but then noticed a flicker of the same anger and hate smoldering in his eyes, thought it was only faint, and continued on with my interrogation.
"Don't play stupid, I can see it in your eyes, you have some sort of grudge or something against me, but how can that be, I've never even met you?" I asked, my frown deepening as my confusion grew.
With that said his mask of feigned innocence crumpled to the ground and all that left in its wake was a turmoil of emotions that left me speechless. So much anger and hate consumed him that I could practically feel it radiating off him in waves, and if I want mistaken I thought I saw a hint of sadness and something else, something unreadable in those eyes of his.
"You really don't know, your not just faking not knowing why you disgust me?" He asked angrily and glared daggers at me.
It took me a few second to find my voice, but when I did even I could hear the tremor in it. "No, I really have no idea why you would hate me already." The more he continued on with this, the more I had a feel as if I really had done something horrible to him, and for some reason I had forgotten all about it.
"I'll give you a hint," Nathan said, "We met four years ago, in middle school, and we used to be on the same football team. Is this ringing any bells yet?" He asked sarcastically.
At first I had no idea as to what he was talking about, but then a spark in my memory flickered and then everything came rushing back to me at full force and I felt sick to my stomach, as if I was going to puke any second now.
"You mean you're that Nathan?" I asked, paling considerably as all those memories of that time and all I did to him invaded my mind and tortured me.
"Oh, so you recognize me now?" He asked, smiling thinly, his eyes narrowed, not at all the picture of happiness at this news.
"Well, you've changed so much, I almost didn't, I mean, just look at you now," I motioned to his appearance and laughed nervously, then looked away, feeling like shit.
It was all my fault that he had changed so much. If I hadn't of done those things to him, then maybe he would have stayed the sweet, innocent kid I had known him to be.
"Well, I'll give you something to remember," he spat, making me quickly look back up at him in confusion, and before I could figure out what he meant by that, he pulled back his arm and punched me square in the face, successfully knocking me out cold.
And that there, was how my reunion with my first love ended. It really did pack quite a punch indeed, literally, don't you agree?
