Benjamin's P.O.V
I wanted to run. I wanted to get out of here. I was getting overly paranoid. The slightest thing was making me jump. Blake had merely tapped my shoulder and I'd jumped ten feet in the air, flung my test tube up and then watched it come smashing back down, spraying acid everywhere. Thank goodness it was a non toxic burning acid. I was loosing more sleep than usual, sleeping sitting up with my knees pulled to my chest. I never got that letter from Zain. Nor did he actually visit me again. But each night my room would fill with smoke and eerie green light. I'd hear whispering and laughing, but wouldn't see any faces. I'd drift off and feel hands grabbing me and jerk away, only to find I was alone. I was a nervous wreck, my hands shook so that I wouldn't hold a pencil without my writing taking up three extra lines long for one letter. And I was starting to resent it. Getting angry at myself for being afraid, which only put me more on edge. I knew I needed help when mum offered to drop me to Matt's instead of me always walking and I threw a plate across the room and told her to leave me alone. I'd apologised, said it was stress, but mum was now wary of me. Which only made me hate myself even more.
It was like I was trapped in my own body, a body that was living a nightmare, a prisoner. And there was nothing in the world I could do about it. It felt like I wasn't in control. I was planning to change that.
Right now I was breaking into the front office of the school with Matt Garret and Blake. Blake was look out in the hall. Garret was distracting the secretary and Matt as behind me crouching as we slipped past the front desk. I crawled around the corner and we were out of sight. I rose to my feet and so did Matt, then we went down to the student files room. The door was locked, but Matt was a lock picker and we were in in a matter of seconds. We stepped into a dark room that was once the old conference room and now used for storage. All the windows had been painted over blocking the light.
I locked the door behind us so that if someone appeared at the door we'd have warning to hide before they barged in. Then turned the light on. The room was full of shelves with boxes and lids of files in the middle of the room in rows and around the wall on the outside were metal cabinets. The cabinets around the outside were labelled with the alphabet. We went to Z first and flicked through. No Zain.
“Shit,” Matt hissed.
“Now what?” I growled, kicking a cabinet and making a loud bang. Matt and I both flinched and looked to the door and waited; nothing. I sighed and went to the shelves in the centre of the room and grazed my eyes over the labels. They had different numbers and codes. I grabbed a box and pulled it down, resting it against one arm while I used the other to flick through papers inside it. There were photos too. I put the box back up and reached for the next one. I pulled off the lid and immediately saw the face of someone very familiar smiling back at me.
Blake.
I gawked and turned to Matt, who was doing the same as me a few rows back.
“Matt, come look,” I said to him and turned back to the box. I lifted my leg up, resting my foot on a lower shelf and the box on my knee and flicked through the papers. The top ones were records on Blake Bishop. His most recent school photo, copies of his reports and grades, immunisation cards parent signings. Matt appeared at me shoulder.
“I thought those would be in the cabinet files?” Matt wondered. I thought so too. Then I spotted something. It was a police record card. I lifted it out to see it better.
Blake Pedley Bishop
D.O.B: 01051994
Mother: Angela Vail Jackson
Father: Jacob Andrew Bishop
Orientation: S.S
Action: N.N
Outcome: S
I frowned at the card with the police symbol at the top and glanced up at Matt who was also frowning.
“What does S.S and N.N mean?” Matt asked. I shook my head. How should I know?
“I think these are labelled by student number for the Curriculum Counsel. What's yours?” I asked Matt as I put the box back together and back in it's dusty spot.
“377483647,” Matt murmured and went to find his number. He yanked a box off it's shelf a few rows in front and flicked through.
“I have one of those police cards to,” Matt called and then read it aloud. “Matthew Hubert Beresford. Date of birth 30th of the 8th 1994. Mother: Jennifer Jackie Kinney. Father: Harry Kent Beresford. Orientation: M.A. Action: H. Outcome: S.”
“How come yours is different?” I pondered as I walked through another aisle looking for my number. I found it and took down the box. My picture was on top and I flicked through until I found my own card.
“Benjamin Andy Warner. Date of Birth 21st of the 3rd 1994. Mother: Sandra Jean Harper. Father: George Dylan Warner. Orientation: N/A. Action: B.W. Outcome: I.P. What the shit does that mean?” I put the card back and when I lifted the others to put it in the right spot and name flashed up at me.
Zain...
Before I could do anything though there was banging on the door and someone was shaking the handle. I could hear shouting from the other side. I quickly shoved the box back and raced to the window at the back of the room where Matt was waiting, trying to pry the dusty lock. It creaked open and we both through ourselves out, landing in the bushes that surrounded it. We both got to our feet and ran for our lives. We decided not to stay in school and headed straight for the diner Blake worked at. Inside we slumped onto stools and I put my head down on the cool counter. An Elvis song was playing from the Jukebox in the corner of the diner and Matt began tapping his foot to it.
“What was with those cards?” I asked, still puffed. I turned my head sideways, my forehead still on the counter to, to see Matt shrug.

I was lying awake in bed again. I'd hoped to find something in the student files, answers I mean, not more questions. I'd seen Zain's name, but I hadn't had time to explore it any further. Now it was eating away at my patience. I sat up in frustration and ripped the sheets off of me. I stood and froze. A glowing figure was walking through my bedroom door into my room. It was taller than me, and broader, and I wasn't entirely sure it was human either. All I knew was it wasn't Zain, and I was completely shit scared. The figure was grinning, and human shaped, sort of. It was distorted and it moved, no, it glided towards me, stopping just before me. It looked like mist was rising off of it like steam.
“You,” it spoke, and I couldn't make out a single voice. It was like seventy people of all different shapes, sizes, gender and age were talking at the same time, the same words.
“M-me?” I whispered, to scared to make much of a sound. The room felt cold, chilling and I was shivering.
“We've been watching you Benjamin Warner. We see things. We know who you are. We know why you are. We don't like it,” the dark ominous figure hissed. I shuddered.
“I don't understand,” I croaked, my voice catching in my throat. The figure opened it's mouth to speak, showing big thick talon like teeth in it's mouth. But no sound came out. It began to shake quickly, becoming blurry as it did, like it was having a seizure. I stepped back and my legs his the edge of my bed and I fell back, sitting on it. The figure's hands reached out and tried to grab me, I shied away, fear rising inside me, taking control of me. Adrenaline was pumping through my veins, my heart pounding in my ears like raging drums. The ghost took a step forward and a wave of shuddering ran through it, throwing it's footing off. It fell forward, coming down on top of me. I pulled my hands up over my face to protect myself and closed my eyes tightly. A wave of air brushed over me, like in slow motion. I felt it run right through me. The feeling was darker, emptier than cold. It was like... nothing, and something at the same time. I fell back onto the bed as goosebumps crept across my skin and I let out a low and slow breath out and then in.
“Hey!” a voice said and I jumped, falling off my bed and landing on my stomach on the floor. I coughed at the dust from under my bed and rolled over onto my back and looked up. Zain was standing there, his hands on his hips, grinning at me. I sighed.
“Hi,” I said and picked myself up off the floor. I crawled onto my bed and Zain sat down beside me, bouncing a little.
“I'm sorry about before. I don't know what my nightmares were doing coming in here like that. They usually stay in my wardrobe or under my bed, or in the basement,” Zain said sadly. I was watching his face as he spoke and the way it was so sad disturbed me.
“It's okay,” I muttered, even though it wasn't. Zain scratched the back of his neck.
“They were blocking me out from you for a while. I was really scared actually,” Zain laughed nervously at the end. I chuckled sympathetically. The truth was, though I didn't want to admit it, I'd missed Zain popping into my life in the night. And the kiss, it couldn't get it out of my head. And I hadn't even felt it... physically anyway.
“Blocking you from me? I don't understand,” I frowned at him. He locked eyes with me and shrugged.
“I don't really understand it either,” he said.
“Hey,” I said, snapping my head up. “You never sent me that letter.” I accused him. Then paused, why did I care? I didn't! I did! I did but I didn't. Ugh!
“Oh yeah, sorry, I forgot,” Zain laughed, making his shoulders shake. I rolled my eyes, pretending I didn't feel a little sad that I wasn't that important to him for him to remember. Maybe he didn't like me anymore anyway.
Not that I cared, because I didn't.
“I'll do it tomorrow I promise,” Zain smiled sweetly and I felt guilty.
“Dude, but what if you're the real one, and I'm living the dream? What if I don't get the letter?” I wondered aloud. Zain raised his hand as if to place it on my shoulder but stopped halfway, realising he couldn't touch me.
“Only one way to find out...” Zain shrugged.
