Our wedding was fast approaching as days turned into weeks and the weeks turned into months. It had been a couple weeks since I saw my mother. I still hadn't heard anything from her. I'll admit that it bothered me, but I didn't outwardly show it. I acted nonchalant about the whole thing, though I think Sean could see right through that. If he did he kept it to himself though. I don't think he wanted to upset me by talking about her. Besides, the wedding plans were a good enough distraction. Sean and I hardly did anything every evening after work aside from going over all the details and such. It was a little stressful because the holidays were coming up. Thanksgiving was next week, and then after that was our wedding and then Christmas. Sean and I weren't wasting any time. Having known each other for so long, I didn't see the need to be engaged for forever.
"Jake our invitations are here!" Sean said excitedly from the kitchen. I jumped up from the couch, setting my laptop on it and headed into the other room.
"How do they look?" I asked happily. He held one up, his eyes shining with delight.
"They're perfect," he replied, handing it to me. I carressed the invite gingerly, as if it was going to slip from my fingers. On the front was a picture of Sean and I, we were sitting in a pile of bright orange leaves, my back against his chest and his arms around me. It was adorable. Our names were written in a beautiful font. I flipped it over. The other side featured three different pictures of the two of us, from holdling hands, kissing and surrounded by the most gorgeous orange and yellow sunset, and smiling at the camera while we were standing close together. This side also contained the wedding date and time, as well as where it was at. December 14th. I drew in a deep breath and looked back up at Sean.
"They're amazing!" I said, reaching over to grab his hand. He came around the counter and hugged me. I wrapped my arms around his back and held him tightly to me. When we pulled apart I wiped at my eyes quickly, as happy tears had began to form.
"Aww," Sean cooed, brushing his fingertips along my cheek, wiping at the skin. "Baby."
"I can't wait Sean. I really can't wait," I whispered, hugging him again.
"I'm so excited too babe," he said into my hair as he kissed my head. "It'll be here before we know it. We gotta get these all mailed first," he reminded me. I grabbed the box of envelopes and took a seat at the bar.
"Well they aren't going to mail themselves," I told him, smirking. He laughed.
"No they aren't. You know, you look so beautiful in these photos. I'm a lucky guy," Sean said, looking at me sincerely. My heart melted into a giant puddle on the floor just then. It was like being under a spell. A wonderful spell from an absolutely stunning man. I was rendered competely speechless, so I did what you always do in moments like this. I reached over, grabbed his neck and pushed his lips into mine. We kissed deeply and desperately, my tongue entering his mouth to deepen the kiss. He tasted so incredibly good as he always does. Sean pulled away and leaned his forehead against mine, both of us needing air.
"We need to finish this as quick as we can," he muttered. I chuckled at his urgency.
"We will," I said, wiggling my eyebrows. Just then there was a knock at the door. Sean kissed my forehead before getting up to answer the door. His mother burst through as soon as he opened it.
"Oh my god are those the invitations!?" She asked loudly, crossing the room towards me. I quickly closed the box and covered the one in my hand.
"Yes, but you have to wait," I teased her. She crossed her arms.
"Young man don't pester me," she said playfully, stamping her foot like a child.
"It's a surprise mom!" Sean said. "We'll mail them soon and then you can squeal all about it then." We both laughed, leaving Kristen to frown at us.
"I don't squeal," she said. Sean and I exchanged a knowing look.
"Riiight," Sean said slowly and dramatically.
"Oh fine. I'm just so excited for you two. You're so cute together!"
"Thanks mom. I'm glad you're happy for us. It means a lot," Sean told her, hooking his arm around my waist after I got to my feet.
"Would you like anything to drink?" I asked my future mother-in-law. She smiled warmly at me.
"No thanks Jake. But I did come to tell you guys about the cake. I've got it all taken care of!" She said smiling widely.
"Thanks mom. It's a huge help. We both didn't have any idea who to go with," Sean explained.
"Thanks Kristen," I thanked her. "We couldn't possibly have planned all this by ourselves. We know nothing about weddings," I said.
"I'm just glad I could help! This means that we've got the cake, the location, and now the invites done! I'm taking both of you individually to get your suits, I already have a place picked out to get them from." Kristen rambled on. Sean's face turned a slight shade of pink.
"Mom you don't have to take us-" Sean started, but Kristen cut him off.
"Of course you can't go together! Don't be ridiculous!" She said loudly.
"Well it's not like there's a girl that the groom can't see the dress beforehand," Sean countered. Kristen just shrugged.
"Just because you're both boys doesn't mean you get to see what the other is wearing. I want it to be a surprise. You're both going to be so handsome," She winked at me. I just smiled and shook my head at her antics. I really didn't mind one way or another, but I thought it was cute of her to think of such little details. "By the way, the location is absolutely beautiful Jake. That's actually why I stopped by, I was hoping I could show you both where it is today," She said.
"I'd love to see it!" I replied giddily. I was hoping it would be the perfect spot, It was one thing that I had been worrying about because I wanted it to be perfect.
"Good then let's head out as soon as possible. We want to get there before it gets dark," She explained.
"How long will it take to get there?" Sean asked.
"About 45 minutes. It's up in the mountains after all," she replied. We all scrambed to get our coats and shoes and such, and left the apartment. We piled into Kristen's car. Sean sat in the front next to his mother while I sat in the back. I was feeling pretty anxious about this. Seeing the place where Sean and I were going to get married. I hoped I liked it, because it was already scheduled and on the invites. I couldn't change it now, but I trusted Kristen.
Soon we were following a road that was winding up into the mountains and it was gorgeous up here. The leaves had already lost most of their leaves up this high and the views were stunning. We kept going for a while and we were surrounded by nothing but forest. I was loving the sights. Kristen made a right turn onto a small paved road that was pretty narrow. We pulled up to a large wooden lodge. It was beautiful and it had many windows.
"We're here!" Kristen chirped happily before parking and turning off the engine. I gasped as I stepped out onto the ground. The view was incredible and more than I could've ever imagined.
"Wow," Sean said from beside me. My eyes were wide and I couldn't take them off the amazing sight. We were basically on top of the world or so it felt like. You could see everything from here.
"You guys like it?" Kristen asked. I turned to her.
"Like it? No I love it! It's better than I could've ever thought. Wow," I replied. She smiled at our expressions.
"Wait until you see inside the lodge where the reception is going to be!" Kristen said, smiling ear to ear. Sean grabbed my hand and we followed after Kristen hurriedly.
* * * *
"Dad it's amazing!" I said into my phone as we rode back to the apartment after exploring a little bit.
"Jake I'm so glad! It'll be even more beautiful with snow I'm sure," He replied.
"Yeah it probably will." I said.
"So did you get the invitations yet?" He asked.
"Yeah we're hopefully mailing them tomorrow. I'm so happy with the way they turned out!" I told him. He chuckled.
"What?" I asked curiously.
"I just love hearing how happy you are. It's in your voice," He stated.
"Thanks dad. I've never been happier. I mean, I wish Collin was here to see it," I said.
"I know Jake, but he's here. He knows," dad replied. "Oh I almost forgot, I need to talk to you about Thanksgiving." I tensed up a little at that.
"Maybe we can grab lunch tomorrow?" I offered.
"Sure that'd be great."
"Okay let's plan on that then," I said.
"Alright, I'll talk to you then Jake. Love you kiddo," He said.
"Love you too, bye." I ended the call. I settled back in the seat as we neared the apartment. I wonder how Thanksgiving was going to go this year. I mean Sean was definitely going to be with me...and I wanted to have Kristen come too, but I didn't really know what was going to happen with my mother. I guess I would find out tomorrow.
