Chapter 26: What?

After freaking out a little in the bathroom, wondering what Dask could possibly have to say, I got myself together and returned to my bedroom. I'd left the door open when I'd left the room a little earlier, so when I walked in I didn't make much noise.

Dask didn't hear me enter anyway too busy lost in his thoughts. I seen him side-on, sitting in my desk chair. He'd backed it away from the desk a little, and moved it at an angle so that he could look out the window. He was holding his hands tightly together in his lap and biting his lips, then he lifted one hand and ran it through his hair, before placing it back in his lap. A sigh left his lips.

I shut the door and he turned towards me, at the sound of it closing. His eyes searched mine. For what, I don't know. I wished he wasn't so nervous.

Whatever he had to say, it was stressing him out.

Trying to be unaffected by his nervous silence, I walked over and sat down on my bed, and faced myself towards him. Hoping to sound casual, I asked, "What's up?"

I didn't want him to tell me that he liked Clara again, and that he wanted me to call her for him, like he had two years ago.

Dask cleared his throat. "I uhm..." He hesitated. His eyes looked more worried than ever. "I think ..." He hesitated again.

I braced myself to hear what he had to say. He was going to tell me that he didn't want to kiss me anymore, and he was going to ask out Clara again.

When I felt as ready as I thought I'd ever be, I asked, "What is it, Dask?"

He swallowed and I watched his throat move. "I...uhm..I..." Dask took a deep breath.

Here came the big reveal.

"I...uh.. I think...I think..." He looked so cute as he stumbled over his words. If only I'd made my move quicker, I might have gotten in one last kiss, before he ditched me for Clara.

"I think...No. I know...," he said.

I quietly watched him as he gathered his thoughts. The afternoon sun shone on his face. It looked like he was trying to take in some strength from it. If he kept this up, I might just kiss him anyway, before he could say anything more. He looked so vulnerable as he tried to gather some courage for his next words.

"I...I..." He stopped and looked out the window again.

I was trying to be patient, because I didn't want to rush him. But, it was becoming difficult for me, waiting for him to tell me what was on his mind. I needed him to tell me already. Gently, I tried to encourage him. "Dask?"

"Jo." His soft blue eyes met mine.

"What are you trying to say?"

A flash of determination sparked from behind his beautiful eyes. "I think I...I might...I might..." He stopped. "I know actually...I think I know...I mean, I know...I know. I...I'm..." Then he stopped and looked away again.

My patience was officially gone. I urged him on. "What?"

Then he finally said it.

"I'm gay."

I was taken aback, speechless really. Of all things, that was not what I expected him to say. My eyebrows shot up so high, I felt like they were ready to fly off my face. I tried to process what he'd just said, because it wasn't sinking into my head.

A silence stretched between us. Dask began biting his fingernails and I frowned. I knew I had to say something, but my brain didn't seem to be functioning properly. I desperately searched my head for something to say. Something to assure him that he didnt need to massacre his nails with his teeth. Then I grasped onto a thought: he'd told Clara before me.

"That's what you were talking to Clara about yesterday?"

"Umm...yeah," he replied.

"You told her first?"

Dasks eyes got wary.

"You told her before me!"

"She guessed. She wanted to talk with me about it." He tried to explain.

I knew I wasn't helping matters, but I went on anyway. "What is she, a shrink? You go over her house one day, straight, and the next day you're gay?"

Dask looked flustered. "She just helped me piece it together properly in my head."

I stood up and began pacing the room, upset for no apparent reason. "All our fooling around has messed with your head."

He looked at me. "I wanted to mess around."

I stopped walking and looked at him. "You knew you was gay when we messed around?"

Dask shrugged, and his voice was quiet when he said, "I dont think so, but I wondered about it sometimes."

"Because we messed around," I declared. "You might not be gay. I mean, I like messing around too. All guys do."

"Not with each other."

"Some do." I attempted to explain. "I looked up this website last night and lots of guys experiment."

"But, I am gay."

I faced towards him, after sitting back down on my bed. "Are you sure?" I asked.

Dask nodded his head.

"Why didn't you tell me?"

"I am, now."

I sighed. Then a thought occurred to me. "So, we can still make out?"

Dask shook his head. "It wouldn't be right, now that I know I'm gay."

I frowned. "Why not?"

"It wouldn't be right."

"Oh yeah? Who said that? Clara?"

Dask shook his head.

"What did she say to you?" I asked.

"Nothing I didn't already know. But, I didn't know for sure until I talked with her yesterday."

I was so freaking angry that he talked about it with her first.

"Will you please forget about Clara?" he asked.

"Will you?" I asked.

Dask frowned, "She's my friend," he said.

"I don't care."

A flash of hurt crossed his features. "I do."

I felt terrible. I walked over to him and gently looped my arms underneath his and lifted him off the seat, wrapping my arms around him in a hug. "I'm sorry," I said.

His arms wrapped around my waist and he leaned his head on my shoulder. He seemed to be breathing easier and I was relieved. I felt him smile against the side of my neck, his lips having accidentally grazed my skin. "It's okay, Jo."
