Chapter 2

"Come on Jasper, what's up with you?" my friend Danny asked. After a long lecture from the school secretary, Mrs. Birch, Shannon and I rushed to P.E. just in time. Unfortunately, I'm clumsy and knocked over a cart of dodge balls, catching the attention of one of the gym teachers. Shannon, being the best friend she is, left me for dead, stuttering some crappy excuse. Another thing I suck at. Lying. So now, Danny and I are running don't-stop-until-I-say-so laps for being late while Shannon gets off scot free.

"I'm fine. Why were you late?" I asked, trying to change the subject. Danny glared at me.

"I was rutting with Reyna Pitts in the handicap restrooms. Now don't change the subject. I can tell when you're lying."

Danny is the only person who knows me as well as Shannon. He and I are close friends and neighbors. When I was eleven, Danny moved into the house across the street from mine and we became instant friends. Six years later and we're just as close.

"Woah! Reyna Pitts? How was it?" I faked a smile and hoped that he'd forget about what he was saying.

"Jasper!" Danny snapped. Damn. I sighed and rubbed the back of my neck as we jogged.

"Nothing. Look, I said I'm fine. I'm just thinking about something." Danny glanced at me and smirked.

"You aren't thinking about something. You're thinking about someone." I shrugged and looked away. Having confirmed his suspicions, Danny laughed.

"Who is she? Do I know her?" I tried not to cringe when he said her. If only it was a her. All I could think of all day was the cute little blonde with the violin. I prayed that school would hurry up and end so I could go back. Maybe I would see him again.

"No, you don't." I muttered. Danny was about to say something else, but Shannon began to jog beside us with a grin so large, it was scary. Her sister, Hayley, trailed behind her. Shannon was obviously the dominant sibling of the two. Hayley was usually quiet when they were together, leaving Shannon to do all the talking.

"Guess what, lover boy." Shannon smirked. Before I could speak, she continued. "Hayley knows who your crush is! Isn't that great?" My face turned red and at that moment, I just wanted to strangle her. Danny was standing right there and she told Hayley I was gay!

"Really? Who is she?" Danny asked excitedly, and Shannon looked at him like she had just noticed he was there. Hayley giggled quietly at my expression.

"Sorry Danny, it's Bff confidential. So go away while I make Jasper's dreams come true." Shannon said sweetly, but Danny knew her well enough to know it was fake. Any minute now she could pull out a switchblade and shank him. No lie. Shannon may not have a switchblade, but she isn't above the idea.

Danny grumbled but jogged away, throwing me one last glare. Once Danny was gone, I grabbed Shannon by her shoulders and shook her violently.

"What kind of best friend are you? What if you slipped and Danny heard? What if he started to hate me? AND WHHEN DID YOU TELL HAYLEY??" I questioned her, internally having a panic attack. Shannon rolled her eyes and shoved me off.

"Please, I told her the moment you told me. Hayley is really good at keeping secrets." Hayley nodded.

"His name is Gale and believe it or not, he goes to our school." Hayley said and gaped her. How did I not know that? A gorgeous boy like him was walking around our school and I hadn't seen him! Shannon must have sensed what I was thinking because she quickly explained.

"He just got here last week, and he doesn't talk much." She said and I nodded. Maybe I'd keep an eye out for him.

I asked Hayley if she knew anything else, but she didn't. He didn't talk to anyone, not even the teachers. In fact, Hayley had to ask the teachers just to figure out his name.

While we walked and talked, Shannon's boyfriend, Damian Buschell, jogged by. He slowed down to give Shannon a half hug.

"Hey." He said.

"Hey. She said, and that was it. He jogged away and Shannon kept on talking. I can never understand those two. They claimed to be dating, but they barely spoke. At parties they go their seperate ways and Shannon usually goes home with some other guy. I know Damian knows Shannon cheats on him. I mean, the whole school knows! Yet, he never says anything.

"You guys are such a crappy example of a couple." Hayley said like she does everytime their in the same room and still ignore each other, but Shannon, like always, just shrugs. I shook my head but didn't say anything.

Soon P.E. was over and everyone went to the locker rooms to change except me since I was late and didn't dress out. Shannon and I walked to our next class, which was English with Mr. Furman.

"God I hate this class!" Shannon groaned for the umpteenth time, and I nodded in agreement. Mr. Furman loved to give us long essays on boring or complicated subjects every week. And to top it off, he makes it due on some weird and random day, like Thursday. And it was never the same day.

Mr. Furman was hunched over his desk grading the essays we had turned in yesterday (A/N: Tuesday in case anyone was wondering). His glasses were pirched on his nose and his cold black eyes scanned the essay in front of him before marking the front page with a giant F. Geez, I hope that isn't mine.

"Is it just me or did it get ten times colder?" Shannon whispered to me as we took our seats.

"No, it's just the draft of cold air coming from the Principal's office, which is just down the hall, Ms. Simone." Mr. Furman said without looking up from his grading. The class laughed and Shannon blushed.

"I don't know Mr. Furman, it feels pretty cold in here. I'm thinking it's something crueler than the Principal's office, like our previous assignments." Shannon said cheekily. The class looked at Mr. Furman to here his response.

"Well, Ms. Simone, why don't I send you down to the Principal's office to see how cold it is there, and after school, while you're here for detention, we'll spend an hour an a half comparing the two."

The class oohed and laughed. Shannon opened her mouth to respond, but before she could the bell rang, signaling the class was starting. I smirked and shook my head as Shannon flipped Mr. Furman off while his back was turned.

Mr. Furman began his lecture on poetry, but I couldn't focus. All I could do is think about the little blonde who had filled my mind since I saw him.
