Chapter 3
The next day was torture. I wanted to see the little blonde again. Gale. No last name that anyone new of. Apparently no one knew who he was. Shannon and I had been asking around, but we got nothing. I was at fourth period, math, and so far he wasn't in any of my classes.
"Jasper! Dude!" Someone hissed to the left of me, disrupting my thoughts. I looked over at Danny, the source of the hissing. He was gnawing on the mteal part of his pencil, looking confused. I sighed. Here we go.
"Jasper, I don't get this." Danny complained. I sighed and took his paper to "help" him.
"This would be easy if you just paid attention." I said. Danny pulled a face and began to protest, but I cut him off. "You know you don't, so don't deny it." Danny frowned and palmed his face.
"I know, I know, but if I get a bad grade I'll be benched at the next football game. Coach Victor doesn't play around." Danny said before taking back his paper. I glanced around to see if the teacher caught us, but she was explaining a math problem to a student. He pretended to pay attention while he checked out her boobs. Gross.
Someone bumped into the back of my chair, causing me to jolt forward. I looked up and saw Ashton Little, goalie for our school's soccer team. Danny noticed him too. Oh no.
"Watch where you're going, dipshit!" Danny snapped at him. Ashton narrowed his eyes and took a step towards Danny.
"Shut the fuck up, Fisher, before I shove my fist down your throat!" Ashton growled back, which was actually pretty humorous. I doubt he could even reach Danny's throat, he's so tiny. His last name is Little for a reason. The football players called him Chicken Little.
"I would threaten to do the same, but we all know how much you love to have things shoved down your throat, faggot." Danny snickered, and all the other football players in the class snickered. I flinched. If he only knew.
"Sorry to disappoint you, but I wouldn't touch a dick, especially one as small as yours, with a ten foot pole." Ashton shot back and some soccer players laughed. I rolled my eyes as they went back and forth.
The football team and the soccer team have hated each other for as long as I remember. I don't know why, and I'm pretty sure they don't either, but it doesn't stop them from fighting constantly.
Finally, the bell rang, ending the argument, and we all headed out for lunch.
"Sorry about that, by the way. I didn't mean to bump you." Ashton apologized on his way at and I nodded. He was a really nice person and I'm pretty sure he and Danny would be great friends if it weren't for the rivalry between their two sports.
Danny and Ashton glared at each other before they left the classroom. The football players went one way and the soccer players went the other way.
Danny and I walked down the hall, occasionally saying hello to a few people. Girls gazed at us with desire, but we ignore them.
I ignored them because, well, I'm gay. Danny ignored them because, well, I actually don't know why he ignores them. He could probably have any girl in our school. Hell, he could probably take a hit at a few guys as well. I couldn't be the only closet gay here.
We entered the cafeteria, automatically dodging to left as pasta was flung at us. The class clowns grinned at us while one shouted an apology. I guess they're waiting for someone to walk through. Whoever they were, I felt bad for them.
"Idiot." Danny grumbled at the one who threw the pasta. I chuckled and headed for the lunch line. Unfortunately, Shannon and I can't always eat lunch, so we have to suffer a day or two and hope we live to see the weekend.
"So, when are you going to tell me who this mystery girl is?"Danny suddenly asked. I groaned inwardly. I honestly thought he'd forget. I looked around for Shannon, hoping she could come and distract, but no luck.
"Um, what about it?" I was careful not to say her. Even though I was pretending Gale was a girl, I didn't want to say it.
"Who is she?" Danny asked loudly. A few girls in line turned to me and smiled, probably hoping they were the one Danny was talking about. I was about to answer but was interrupted by a loud splat. The entire cafeteria grew silent. Danny and I turned around to see why, and what I saw sparked anger in me.
The little blonde stood at the front of the cafeteria with a large and messy pasta stain on his chest. What hadn't gotten on his white long sleeve shirt covered his face. Red tomato sauce painted his beautiful blonde hair and noodles were stuck to his forehead. His pink lips were in the shape of an O, and his eyes were wide.
The silence was broken when one of the class clowns broke into a fit of laughter. The rest of the students joined in and soon everyone was laughing. Danny glared at some of the girls close to us, and they stopped laughing. I glanced back at the blonde and our eyes locked. His grew wider, if that was even possible, and he turned and ran out of the cafeteria.
Shannon and Hayley approached me, looking confused.
"What happened?" Hayley asked, but I wasn't listening. I handed Danny my tray of "food" and ran after the boy. Shannon called my name, but I kept running. I burst threw the door and looked down both halls. At first, I didn't see him so I started checking bathrooms. I finally found him in the fourth bathroom trying to wash his shirt.
I froze and stared at his bare chest. He wasn't ripped or buff, but he wasn't skinny. His muscles were defined and wiry, and his chest and stomach was firm. Droplets of water from his wet hair dripped down his shoulders and onto his chest. I shook my head and stepped forward.
"Um, hey." I breathed. Smooth, Jasper. Just smooth. The little blonde looked up and blushed before looking away. He scrubbed his shirt a little bit harder and didn't say anything. I cleared my throat and he stopped but didn't look at me.
"That's not gonna come out." He frowned but kept scrubbing until he realized i was right. He peered up at me from under is eyelashes, his big blue eyes begging for help, and my heart leaped. I smiled and nodded towards the door.
"I have an extra shirt in my locker. It was originally for Danny, my best friend, but he'll have to deal." I said, and the blonde offered up a half-smile. I led him to my locker, making sure not to run into anyone. Walking around without a shirt could get you detention, no matter the reason. Besides, they would ask him a bunch of questions, and he didn't look like much of a talker.
"It might be a little big on you..." I trailed off, holding up a long sleeve black sweater. He just shrugged and took it from me, nodding in thanks. I waited for him to put on the shirt before closing my locker.
"So you're Gale, right?" I blurted. He gave me a weird look and narrowed his eyes. I mentally slapped myself. Great. Now he thinks I'm a stalker. This is why you're single, Jasper. After inspecting me for a moment, he nodded slowly.
"Word travels." I explained, and he nodded, looking relieved. We leaned against my locker in silence. I didn't know what to say, but I didn't want to leave. I glanced over at him and caught him looking at me. We both blushed and looked away. I think I've blushed more in these two days than I ever have in my life.
After a while the silence was too much for me.
"You play the violin right?" I asked ad he nodded. "I heard you yesterday on the street. You're really good." Gale ducked his head and he mouthed a thank you. I couldn't hear it, but I assumed he was just really shy.
"Do you want to sit with me?" I asked suddenly. He gaped at me in shock before quickly shaking his head. My face fell a bit, but I quickly recovered.
"You sure? I'm sure you'd love my friends. Well, Shannon's kinda crazy, but everyone else is sain. I swear." I promised. Gale grinned but shook his head.
"Alright, but if you change your mind, I'll be in there." I said. He nodded and I walked back to the cafeteria. As soon as I turned the corner, I broke into a grin. Job well done, Jasper. I managed to semi keep my cool, and he didn't think I was a freak. I went back to the cafeteria, where my friends were sitting at our table.
Danny looked up at me and instantly looked guilty.
"What?" I asked. Danny pointed at Shannon, who was digging into my lunch with a vengance. I rolled my eyes and sat down next to Danny. Hayley was pushing something mushy and a sickening color brown around on her tray.
"Sorry, I fought her off as long as I could." Danny apologized.
"From the looks of what we're eating, she can have it." I snorted. Someone sat down next to Shannon, and I glanced her way. It was her "boyfriend", Damian. They both muttered hellos and dug into their food. Hayley just shook her head and continued to play with her food.
"So, why did you go running after the kid?" Danny asked, chewing on the rubbery chicken they served. I froze but quickly recovered. However, Shanno caught my slip upand stopped eating. Hayley leaned forward as well, smirking.
"Yeah, Jasper, why did you go running after that kid?" Hayley mocked, and threw her a dirty look.
"In case you all are unaware, pasta was thrown at him. I went to help him clean up." I said. Shannon mumbled something that sounded like, "Or you helped him get dirtier", and I shot her a look. Sometimes I wonder how she manages to keep my secret safe, considering her numerous amounts of slip ups.
"Jack Quakes slipped on water and dropped his lunch all over himself last week, and you didn't go help him." Hayley pointed out. That evil bitch.
"That's true." Shannon said, challenging me with her stare. She and Hayley were always trying to force me to come out, but I never did. I wasn't ready, and they didn't get that. My mom and dad would hate me if they knew.
"I didn't help him because there was a wet floor sign and he was running, so he kind of deserved it. This kids new and not stupid, and he didn't deserve to get hit with food on his second week of school. And seriously, is it a crime to help people out?" I snapped at them, my patience wearing thin.
"He's right, you know." Damian added, startling everyone, most of all me. Damian and I don't really talk. I'm pretty sure he doesn't like me since he makes a point to ignore me, so him not only jumping into a conversation with me, but agreeing with as well, was a shocker.
"Jack is an idiot and deserved it, and that kid is cute." Oh yeah, did I mention he's openly bi. Luckily for him, his mysterious attitude, dark sense of style, and rugged looks kept him at the top of the school. Damian's taller and stronger than I am, so he isn't an easy target.
Shannon huffed and pouted at him.
"Cuter than me?" She whined, and he didn't answer. "Damian?"
"See, even he agrees with me. So get off my back." I said, directing the conversation back to me. It's only fair that I help him out since he helped me.
Soon, we all finished our food and got ready to leave the cafeteria. Shannon grabbed Damian's arm and dragged him out of the cafeteria, probably to chew him out for not answering her question. Honestly, I'm surprised she even cares. They barely speak.
Danny headed to his next class, and Hayley and I walked to English, but right when we were going to walk in, Gale walked out.
He nodded in my direction and kept walking. Hayley watched him leave.
"Wow, he's even cuter up close." She sighed, and I nodded.
"I know."
