Chapter 11
A/N: people seemed interested for me to update this one so I decided eh why not, if it's what my babies want then ill update it. Think I'm going to switch it up from the usual and write this in third person. If you prefer it the other way then tell me down in the comments. I just thought I'd try something new.
Also this isn't just a filler chapter so if you're following the storyline then read it all the way though because there is an important part in the end.

Adrian's pen tapped on his paperwork sporadically, he was eager to finish filling out the release forms. Just to think soon he would get to walk around with his angel by his side. Just the mere thought brought a small smile to his face. Carter disappeared minutes before into the small built in bathroom and he was really taking his time. The teen was trying to make himself look presentable, he actually tried to brush out his mop of wavy blonde hair. All of it was for nigh though because it just didn't want to cooperate today.
Adrian would look up from time to time beginning to get anxious. Slowly, almost timidly, the bathroom door opened. Carter stepped out feeling awkward, he plucked at the sleeves, pulling them over his pale hands. The blonde wasn't used to wearing these kind of clothes anymore and they seemed to hang oddly from his lithe figure, they made him feel very conscious of his body. Adrian didn't look up for once, he was completely focused on finishing his paperwork, sometimes he had the dumbest timing.
"So you're still doing that paperwork? I thought you'd be done by now," Carer finally said feeling ignored. Adrian peered up and was struck silent for a moment, though he usually was around this boy, the sun seemed to shine directly on him making his golden hair shine. Never before was Adrian so dumbstruck over someone's appearance. Carter seemed to notice him staring causing him to flush lightly then look away.
With a smile Adrian finally found his words, "There's a lot to do, by the way, you look gorgeous today Angel,"
Carter raised his head but still refused to meet his gaze, "Really?" He asked timidly. Adrian couldn't help but smile bigger at him. Obviously nobody ever showered him with affection which Adrian thought was pure criminal, everybody should just love on this boy.
"Really really, come here," Adrian gestured for him to walk over, Carter hesitantly obliged. Adrian pulled him down onto his lap moving the release forms out of the way so he wouldn't land on them. Carter turned a whole new shade of pink but didn't resist. The brunette smiled at him and kissed the tip of his nose.
"You're absolutely perfect Angel," Adrian said softly but loud enough for the blond to hear. He wanted him to know, because most of the time it seemed he didn't. Carter's hand immediately went to the scar disfiguring his cheek obviously having his doubts. "Even with this?" He questioned.
"Definitely, I forgot it was even there," Adrian mumbled and wrapped his arms around him so he could finish the work he was doing. Carter looked down at the paperwork now resting on his lap and smiled small. Nobody had made him feel this happy in a long time. Carter actually felt like he could trust this guy, this amazing, sweet, protective, guy.
Carter quickly read over the forms while Adrian wrote, having slight difficulties on account of his companions sloppy handwriting. He read that they were just going to the local super-center then right back home. Nervous butterflies swarmed around his belly. He had forgotten that there were a lot of people in this town that could recognize him. Suddenly he began to feel self conscious again, what if they all just stared at him then ran off to tell their friends they had seen the freak.
Adrian however finished the forms despite his Angel's inner qualms. "Okay I need to bring these to Dr. Thuddy do you want to come with me?" Carter considered his question and nodded. Latching onto his hand.
The pair set off to the senior psychologist's office. People bustled all around them, bumping into them on occasion. Carter jumped with every bump, he didn't leave his room very often. Adrian didn't mind him holding onto his arm so tightly, he accepted that Carter may be skittish considering he hadn't left in awhile.
They passed the nurses desk earning whispers from the bored women sitting there. Most of the nurses in this hospital always seem to be gossiping about something. After hearing that the "difficult" patient had finally spoken for the first time in almost a year they were surprised. But to see that the said patient had actually left his room for once of his own accord was just shocking. No telling how long this would be circulating. Adrian quickened his pace fearing Carter would get anxious if he heard them talking. A nurse heading back to find and retrieve Alec almost ran into them. The child had been acting rowdy and testy all day. None of the nurses were sure why, they assumed it was because they hadn't seen hide nor hair of his family.
The closer they got to Storm's room the more anxiety Carter seemed to gain. He was beginning to have his doubts. Even with Adrian walking beside him happily, squeezing his hand encouragingly. People were cruel, people would say things that time couldn't necessarily heal. The worst part is most of them won't even think about it. Most of the cruel things they once told the one unfortunate soul would be cast aside in their mind and filed under unimportant. Quite frankly Carter was unsure if he could handle being talked down to anymore.
Before they even reached her room Storm turned a corner nearly running into them. She flashed them a dazzling smile upon recognition, "Hello boys, did you bring the forms Mr. Smith?"
"Yes, they're almost done I just need Carter's signature," Adrian looked down at the blonde beside him. Adrian retrieved a pen from his jeans pocket and flipped through the papers finally landing on the one requiring the timid boy's signature. Carter gazed at the dotted line shakily, he was scared, unsure if he could really do this.
"You know Mr. Willows you don't have to go if you don't want to," Storm said gently, laying a hand on his shoulder. Carter wanted to, he really did. But he was so scared of the outside world, but more of the people that inhabit it. Adrian would hate him though, he really doesn't want Adrian to hate him. So he signed the paper. A shaky name adorned the paper looking very unsure on the dotted line.
With one last glance towards his angel Adrian handed the papers to the senior psychiatrist. Dr. Storm smiled once more, very happy to see her patient become less introverted. She walked away leaving them to do their deed. The two walked back down and out. Carter squinted in the overly bright sunlight. It was sunny today. Birds flew low overhead chirping a bright, happy tune. Cars littered the large parking lot outside the prison Carter called home. Adrian strolled on ahead not seeming to notice Carter lagging behind.
"Are you alright Angel?" Adrian asked seeming far away. Carter glanced up and realized he was still standing in the threshold to the hospital, he was afraid to leave. Leaving felt out of the question. There were too many bad things in the world. Carter found himself frozen, feeling physically unable to move beyond the confines of his safe haven.
Adrian finally realized that Carter was terrified. Which was believable of course, it had been awhile since he had so much as spoken, it's a huge step to decide to leave. Despite knowing that he had come willingly Adrian began to feel guilty. Had he tricked him into coming with him? Did he pressure the poor boy? Wracked with guilt Adrian walked back and placed a gentle hand on Carters shoulder. "Carter you really don't have to come with me if you don't want to," Carter looked up with wide blue eyes. Adrian remembered when they first met, Carter's eyes had been so sad and dull but now they had some life. It was very nice to see.
"I won't think any less of you if you're afraid to come, you were really brave to try though," Adrian leaned forward, planting a gentle kiss on Carter's forehead. Carter wanted to go he really did but the fear of the unknown was overwhelming. Trying not to think too much Carter stepped over the threshold gripping Adrian's bicep tight. Adrian felt so proud that he was willing to try for him.
"Determined aren't you cutie?" Adrian felt a smile creep onto his face. Carter flushed though always flattered when he's called cute. He clung tightly to Adrian's arm and looked up expectantly, waiting for him to continue to his car. Adrian smiled small and led him to his car.
Carter settled into the passenger side, picking at the soft material of the seat nervously. Adrian could see his nerves still, he was worried the boy would be pissed at him later. It's not like he forced him. Carter chose this path of his own free will. The car started smoothly and drove off without any hitch. Tires connected to smooth pavement pulling them further and further from comfort.
The superstore they were headed too wasn't far. Today was Alec's birthday though so they had to make the trip. The small boy would be sad. Adrian wondered if his family had been by to see him at all.
Miles away back at the hospital Alec hid in an empty room. He felt so sad, it was his birthday and nobody came to see him. He thought surely his mommy would come but no, he was all alone. Victor settled down beside him and sighed. "The nurses will be after you soon Alec,"
"Go away!" Alec said sharply. He didn't want to see him, he was angry at Victor. "Because of you my mommy doesn't want to see me! Everyone hates me because of you! Why won't you just go away!?" Alec screamed at him and cradled his head. Blood pounded in his temples making his head rush. He was just so angry, he wanted to be normal. Nobody should be alienated for something so small. More often then not though that's the case.
Victor began to pout, "Don't yell at me Alec.. I didn't do anything,"
"Go away! Don't talk to me! I want to go home!" Alec's eyes began to tear up, "I want to see my mommy and daddy again.. They hate me because of you.. They think I'm crazy," the tears rolled down his cheeks like crazy.
Victor sniffles not liking all of this abuse but he went nowhere. The imaginary boy stared at the floor in silence with nothing to say. Alec just cried, having a mental breakdown if possible for someone such a young age. His head throbbed painfully, crying a lot gave him a headache. He wanted to be normal, he wanted his family back. Overall Alec just felt betrayed, abandoned even. Not only had his parents not come but Adrian promised him a birthday party and Alec hadn't even seen him in the hospital today.
The door opened slowly. What Alec immediately thought to be one of the male nurses turned out to just be Abraham. Despite the large 19 year age difference between them they were very good friends. Alec seen him much like an older brother or a father figure. The 24 year old felt very protective over Alec, he didn't have anybody and he knew that feeling. Abraham sat down on the side opposite of Victor. Alec told him about his imaginary friend many times though he still finds it hard to hear the name. It's just his luck that it would be the same name.
"What's wrong Alec? Don't cry, it's your birthday. You should be happy," Abraham said in the gentlest voice he could muster. He didn't want to intimidate him or anything.
"I want Victor to go away but he won't.. I want to be normal Abe," Alec wiped his tears away profusely.
"I know buddy I know. Don't worry about it though. Did you tell me the other day that Your new friend Adrian was going to throw you a birthday party,"
Alec shrugged sadly, "He was supposed to but I haven't seen him today.." Abraham felt for the boy. He wanted acceptance but he wasn't getting it. Abraham didn't believe Adrian just forgot, in fact he figured they just left to get things for said party.
"I'm sure he'll come, now enough of this pouting. Let's see if we can get the nurses to give you some ice cream eh?" Alec nodded slightly. Abraham smiled lightly and helped him to his feet.
At the store Adrian was having difficulties of his own. The problem was Carter. Once they pulled up and parked he just kind of froze. Carter seemed to be literally glued in place with not intention of moving at all. Adrian had been working for 15 minutes straight trying to coax him out. It's obvious that he's scared but Adrian doesn't want to just leave him in the car. That's not bonding time!
"Come on Carter,my pure more likely to get hurt if I leave you here alone then anything," Adrian stated reasonably.
"Then stay.." Carter's voice was small and childlike. It was a beautiful day however there were a lot of people walking in and out of the store. No doubt this wasn't the idea for a worried, overly anxious person. But they made it this far it would be a shame to have to to back. If it really came down to it he would leave Carter in the car if that's what he really wants but he would prefer not to.
"No Carter I have to go in, listen I'll let you stay out here and lock yourself in but really I think it would be maybe better to come in with me. It would be nice for you to see stuff while you're out of that hellhole." Carter looked at the ground silently unsure of what to do.
"Okay.." Carter responded quietly, nearly in a whisper.
"Okay you're going to stay or okay you're going to go in with me?"
"I'll go in with you," Carter unbuckled himself slowly, he appeared to be shaking again. Adrian smiled at the boy softly, very impressed with him for conquering his own fears so many times today. Carter looked out the door very weary. The parking lot was a vast, dirty place, full of cars and people. Anything could happen. Carter didn't trust that nothing would.
Adrian held Carter's hand as he rose from the car. "You're so impressive Carter, you make me so proud," Carter flushed lightly and looked around over the car. He closed his door softly and clung to Adrian's arm again like when they were still attempting to leave the hospital.
They got some looks from some people but Carter didn't seem to notice so Adrian did to say anything. Not that Carter was capable of seeing their faces though because he had his eyes to the ground once again.
Adrian decided to think about what to get for Alec, he knew he was going to get a cake and some ice cream. Maybe something Superman related, he remembers him mentioning that he wanted to be superman when they first met. How come all children seem to want to be one of those played up super heroes? What's wrong with guys like deadpool or maybe some of the X-men. Children are so impressionable.
"What are you going to get Alec?" Carter asked softly managing to look up at Adrian.
"Uh I don't know yet," Warm air spread around them, warming them as they entered the store. Just thank god it's warm in there. Nothing like walking into a warm building to escape chilly spring air.
"You should get him something superman related, he likes him," Carter offered trying to help. He liked to help when and where he could. In fact he was so caught up trying to think of what they would need to get he didn't even realize they were walking through the store, unknowingly facing his fears.
"Yeah I know I remember him telling me about that when I first met him, he said he was going to be superman when he grew up. Then again he also told me that a Victor was going to be batman. You know why do children only like the mainstream super heroes? Is it because they are so publicized and widely known?" That was probably the reason. Carter pondered his question for a moment.
"Well maybe, it's what they've been taught. That's the super heroes that just come to mind first," Carter responded thoughtfully. It's amazing what the human mind can overlook when focused on one singular thing. Because Carter seemed very calm for someone in his current situation.
"Hey Carter," Adrian said with a bemused smile. Carter looked up at him meeting his gaze.
"Guess where we are," Carter looked around slowly. It seemed to dawn on his face with a sense of urgency, that he was in the middle of a superstore. Now this might not seem like much to the normal person but considering Carter hadn't left the finite area of the mental hospital in months this was pretty big. Quite frankly though Adrian was quite proud of his sweet little angel.
This was going good so far. Carter tensed up gaining a look of immediate anxiety. They were going along pretty well at least until Adrian decided to open his big mouth. Someone needs to learn to filter some things before speaking.
"Calm down Angel you're doing great so far, just pause and take a deep breath alright?" Adrian spoke very calmly, he knew it wouldn't do any good to make the poor boy more anxious.
Carter looked around and took deep breaths, trying his best to calm himself. "I don't think I can do this Adrian. I'm sorry if I've disappointed you or ruined your day.."
Adrian grabbed his hand gently and pulled him aside towrds the restrooms. The hallway leading to the bathrooms was narrow but empty. Carter looked around nervously unsure why he was being brought here. Hopefully Adrian wasn't trying to make him face anymore fears, the crowded store felt like enough. Quite frankly the store felt like too much, It felt like uncharted territory. What if something happened? It was he What ifs that always got to Carter.
"Carter, you're nervous, I understand. The fact of the matter is though you tried, if you want me to I'll walk you back to the car and you can stay in there. I dont want to pressure you into anything and I want you to be comfortable. Personally though I think youre definitely strong enough to handle this though," Adrian assured Carter with a gentle squeeze of the hand. Hopefully the nervous boy would be able to think more clearly in this secluded place than with a bunch of people around/
"Really? But what if somthing bad happens?" Carter asked in a small voice.
"Tell me what you think could happen sweetheart,"
"Like what if someone tries to hurt me, o-or what if somone tries to hurt you?? People are the only real monsters in this world and some will harm you without a second thought! I'm just sc-" Adrian quieted the boy with a kiss. Carter didn't resist and he certainly stopped his worrying at least for a second.
Adrian pulled away to cup Carter's face lovingly, "None of that will happen, I promise. Today will go smoothly because I will not let anything mess it up,"
Carter thought about what Adrian was saying slightly dazed but considerate. Just anything could go wrong and that frightened Carter to no end. This time though he would listen, he would believe everything Arian was telling him. He didn't want to be scared anymore. "I'm sorry for worrying, I'll stay with you. I came to help shop for Alec and thats what I'm going to do,"
"Okay, I like this attitude, lets go do this," Adrian wrapped an arm around Carter's shoulders and led him back out into open territory.
Carter though still worried, wasn't as nervous as before. He felt assured, he was believing everything Adrian had told him. The pair walked around from aisle to aisle. First stop though was the bakery, they picked out a chocolate cake and got Alec's name written on it. Next they visited the party aisle to gather plates, cups, decorations, Adrian wanted to go all out. Alec was a sweet kid and deserves to have a nice day. Being the geniuses they were in all their talking neither remembered to get a shopping cart so by the time they got to the toy aisle they were completely loaded down.
"Do we need to find a shopping cart or something? This stuff is starting to get heavy," Adrian asked as they paced up and down the boys toy aisle. Carter regarded his question with a nod also starting to feel the brunt of their stuff. Though not sure if he wanted to help search for a cart.
"I think we can handle it though, we only need his present and then we can go check out, it seems kind of monotonous to go find a cart," Carter stated matter-of-factly shifting everything in his arms to rest more comfortably. Adrian nodded and got some superhero action figures and a superman stuffed animal. Hopefully Alec would enjoy his stuff.
"Okay do we have everything Carter?" Adrian asked making a mental checklist.
"Name stuff off to me and I'll tell you,"
Adrian nodded once again, "Alright, candles,"
"Check," Carter assured.
"Decorations,"
"Check,"
"Cake,"
"Check,"
"Ice cream,"
"Cheeeeck,"
"Cups and plates and stuff like that,"
"Checksky,"
"Presents,"
"Check-a-roo," That one forced Adrian to smile.
"Bags for the presents,"
"Czechoslovakia," Adrian smiled again, amused by Carter's antics
"Alright well that's all I can think of-wait do we have juice?"
"No but I think we can make it over there,"
"Alright then to the drinks, then to the check out and then back to the hospital," Carter nodded and followed closely behind Adrian. Though being much braver towards the situation he still tended to shy away from passing strangers.
After their trip back to the drinks they returned to the front to check out. Unbeknownst to them they had caught some unnoticed but very unwanted attention. Their unwanted admirer followed them, remaining well hidden, out to the parking lot. He hid among the cars watching with care. As the couple entered their car their follower did the same. Followed out of the parking lot they drove towards the hospital. Neither realized somebody was in their wake. And that somebody was not happy.
Through traffic, lights, and signs alike they were tailed. Each road being filed into their admirer's mind. He's waited for far to long to lose what he's got going now that's for damn sure.
They pulled up at the hospital and got out chatting pleasantly as they gathered their shopping bags. The "admirer" parked somewhere away to watch them walk inside. A mental hospital? He thought, so this is where he's been hiding from me.
"How dare he try to hide," he growled. Rage seemed to fill him to the brim but to be fair it never took very much to make him angry. Carter should know that by now though. "That little bitch thinks he can stay hidden forever does he?"
Thoughts seemed to line up in his mind, hatching a brilliant, though insidious, plan. Talon was going to have Carter back one way or another and if that guy thought he could have him he had another damn thing coming. Carter is his possession and always will be.
