Chapter 9
Jesse’s POV
Charles’s final day as a student in America came; sure he isn’t technically leaving until tomorrow but still. I walked down the hallway of school with my backpack bouncing on my back and then I saw him stood beside Callie. His blue eyes sparkled with the light, a sapphire, that’s what they reminded me of. His perfect blond hair was style properly and his smile was perfect also. I wanted to run my hands through it, like really badly. ‘Jesse baby!’ that screech brought me back to reality.
‘Hey gorgeous, how are you today?’ I asked my new girlfriend Coby as I wrapped my arms around her waist then kissed her lightly.
‘I’m very good thanks but my life totally sucks at the moment. You see Angelina fell out with me because apparently she fancied you but you didn’t date her because I got in the way,’ Coby began to complain which was my queue to stop listening. ‘And right now no one’s life can be worse than mine! But good news is that daddy is going to by me a convertible when I turn seventeen!’ Coby screamed as she jumped back then clapped her hands like a crazy fool. I just nodded my head like I actually gave a damn what she was saying. Then my gaze fell back upon Charles.
‘Okay so today I’ve called an assembly because basically one of our students need to explain something to the entire school,’ the principle, Mr Jenson spoke down the microphone. ‘Charles Arnold could you please come to the stage?’ Instantly a roar of applause filled the hall, well Charles’s popularity went up quickly. I looked through the crowded hall for Charles and I saw him squeezing through the cheering people with Geoffrey stood in front of him clearing a path. ‘Okay so this is our new student who has been here for a month and today is his finally day. You lot should know him as Charles Arnold but his really name or title is Prince Charles Edward Thomas John Arnold, the prince of Driftwood,’ Mr Jenson began. He then put his hand on Geoffrey shoulder then began speaking, ‘this is Geoffrey Jacobs Prince Charles’s butler. He has been working for the prince since he was eighteen which was last year. So the boys came to Driftwood to get away from the royal life and they’ve been staying with Callie Granger. Prince Charles would you like to say a few words?’ Mr Jenson handed Charles the microphone and then hall went wild, what? So they’ve known Charles for weeks and they don’t give a damn but when he gets announced as a prince they freak out? Not cool.
‘Erm hi,’ Charles said nervously. ‘So this seems really scary speaking in front of the school. It is even scarier then speaking in front of the island. Well Mr Jenson basically explained everything you really need to know. I’m a Prince; Geoffrey is my butler and my best friend. Since I’ve been in America I’ve met some really nice people. Being here isn’t at all like I expected it to be, it’s a little more real then living in the palace. It actually feels as though I fit in here. When Geoff and I first came to this school it was a little scary. Geoffrey ended up wearing a suit because my mother has always said that whilst he is working he must look presentable, he looked completely crazy. I had to make up loads of things to keep him seeming sane. I’ve made friends with quite a few people, like the guys from the football team even showed me how to play American football; I’ll have to show my brothers when I got back to Driftwood. I’ve been treated the same as everyone else for once except the times when I went on a moody rampage in lesson and then ended up walking out but that is basically a Prince strop. So that’s all I’ve really got to say. And thank you for allowing me into your school and accepting me like a normal student. It been amazing and I’ll definitely be coming back.’ Every one clapped as Charles gave Mr Jenson the microphone back.
‘Check you out Char, everyone loves you!’ Callie squealed as she walked in to the classroom a few minutes late. She rushed over to Charles who was surrounded by the entire class, including the teacher, and getting questioned about having his own island. I sat by myself in the corner of the room whilst I sent text to different people.
‘Jesse come over here and get a photo taken with the Prince,’ Miss Briggs demanded as she looked at me though the crowd of people.
‘I’ve already had photos taken with him Miss. If you didn’t know I was friends with him before I found out he was a Prince,’ I replied stubbornly. Aaron made his way through the people then came over to me.
‘You might as well be more then friends with the picture I have on my phone,’ Aaron laughed as he pulled his phone from his pocket then waved it in front of me. The picture of me and Charles kissing at that party was on it. Memories instantly came into my head but they stopped seconds later after Miss Briggs ordered everyone back to their seats.
‘Aaron delete it now. If anyone sees that then you are going to die. Do you understand? Get rid of it or I will break you face,’ I threatened quietly trying my hardest not trying to cause a scene as everyone walked back to their seats whilst looking back at Charles ever so often just so they could see the prince. I wanted to scrape my eyes as everyone in the class including the teacher watched Charles with pure amazement. It was as though he was doing something extremely entertaining but he was just having a normal conversation with Geoffrey. ‘What the hell is wrong with this class? Why is everyone so obsessed with him? He’s been here for a month but now the school knows he partly runs an island everyone wants to fangirl?’ I whined as I bit my stubby fingernails.
‘You’re just jealous Jesse, because you aren’t the one getting the attention,’ Callie muttered as she took her seat beside me. If only that was the reason for my jealousy.
I was so relieved when school was over. Charles was trying to get back to Callie’s car which was at the other end of the parking lot but failing desperately when everywhere he went “fans” surrounded him and begged for photographs. I actually felt really bad for him, he looked like he was about to have a panic attack or something. I quickly put my books into the truck where Kayda was sat looking as interested in Charles as everyone else whilst recording the commotion with her phone through the back window of the truck.
‘I’ll be back in a bit,’ I told Kayda as I shut the door then barged through the crowd. When I got to the centre Charles instantly looked relieved as he smiled at me and his eyes lightened up which made me smile in return. He looked even more beautiful. I can’t say that about a guy, only girls look beautiful. ‘I thought I’d come and save you,’ I laughed as I took Charles wrist then began pulling him through the crowd so quickly that everyone got confused and the huge crowd just turned into some weird mosh pit.
‘My hero,’ Charles said in a girly voice as he put his hand on his head like a princess in a movie who had just found there prince, if only. ‘Now just to try and get to the car without anyone seeing me,’ Charles said as he sighed loudly.
‘Get in,’ I instructed as I opened the truck door.
‘No its fine, I’ll just run to the car,’ Charles denied as he turned around.
‘Charles I can drop you off at home, text Geoffrey and Callie to tell them what you’re doing and I’ll drive you home,’ I insisted. Charles looked at me before breathing loudly and then slouching over to the car, nice to know he’s thankful for my kindness of taking him home and stopping him getting attacked by hundreds of weird girls. When Charles slid into the middle seat of the car Kayda looked like she was about to scream as she smiled at Charles and fluttered her eyelashes. ‘I’m going to have to drop her off first because she needs to get her things for her friend’s house but I’ll drop you off straight after. Charles nodded obediently and then watched through the windshield in complete silence.
Charles’s POV
When we arrived outside Jesse’s house it was not at all like I had expected it to be, it was ten times worse. A scruffy apartment building stood in front of us. It looked like if you leant against it, it would crumble up into a mound of rubble. The grass around the grey building was over grown and a disgusting yellowy, dead colour. ‘You’re going to have to come inside with us, sorry about the state but I’ve told you what my mom’s like,’ Jesse ranted as he got out of the truck. Kayda was still looking at me with a smile as I followed Jesse. I looked at the floor which was practically covered in drug needles and empty pill packets.
‘So which floor do you live on?’ I asked trying to sound as normal as possible even though I felt a slight feeling of nausea coming on whilst I looked at the surrounding I was in. It looked worse than a dump site.
‘Third,’ Kayda chipped in before Jesse could respond. I just nodded my head. As we walked closer to the building I noticed a few of the windows were smashed and there were lots of trampy looking people wobbling round the building. One of the men was constantly getting closer and I just wanted to run away but Jesse gave me a reassuring smile, he had a wooden cane in his hand and her wore a ripped coat with pyjamas on under them.
‘You!’ the man screeched as he stumbled in front of me whilst pointing his cane in my face. I looked at Jesse who was looking at me still. ‘Give me the watch!’ the man demanded as he raised his voice.
‘Paul get lost, go bother someone else,’ Jesse spat casually as he took hold of my wrist and pulled me into the rotting building.
As we stood outside of Jesse’s apartment a disgusting smell of sewage filled the air and I felt a little light headed. ‘I don’t think my mom is home but if she is then please stay as far away from her as possible,’ Jesse told me, I nodded. And then he opened the door to the apartment. I wanted to cry when I saw the room. Blood covered the floors, Jesse’s blood. It wasn’t like dripping in blood there was just a few random splodges everywhere. I was actually speechless, how could someone live here? The cupboard doors hung by one rusty hinge and they creaked as we treaded through the gloomy room. All over the counters there was bottles and broken glass.
‘Jesse Taylor you’re home. I need you to make me a drink!’ a woman’s voice echoed through the apartment.
‘Kayda take Charles to our room quickly please,’ Jesse whispered. I expected to be taken on like a mad journey upstairs and though corridors but I had to do was turn around then walk two steps before I was in the bedroom. There were two yellow coloured mattresses on the floor. One had a plain quilt with no cover over it and the other one just had a plain blue, fleecy blanket over it. Even the floor and walls in the bedroom had splatters of blood on it. It looked a little like something you’d see in a haunted house. There wasn’t very much things in the room, just a few random boxes and clothes scattered around the room.
‘If you don’t mind me asking, but why is there blood over the floor?’ I asked curiously but then instantly regretting it seeing how rude I probably sounded.
‘My mom has a short temper and Jesse likes to wind her up. When she gets angry she throws things or scratches and Jesse always seems to be in the way,’ Kayda mumbled. I nodded.
‘Jesse I said make me a drink or else!’ I heard the woman scream.
‘I ain’t doing nothing for you,’ I heard Jesse reply before a plate or something smashed on the floor, or onto Jesse’s body. I flinched at the thought.
‘Shell I go and help him?’ I asked Kayda.
‘No. I tried that once and then I ended up spending a week in hospital. The best week of my life,’ Kayda admitted sadly before giving me a half-hearted smile. I really wanted to cry now, how lucky I actually was even though I was constantly frightened of being taken by the man who killed Geoffrey’s parents. ‘He’ll be fine trust me, he’s survived getting stabbed so I’m sure he’s going to be okay,’ Kayda said comfortingly as she walked over to her mattress and sat on it then hugged her legs to her chest. ‘So what’s it like in Driftwood, in the palace?’
‘Well it’s nice I guess. I’m not technically allowed out of the palace though,’ I said as I smiled reassuringly at Kayda, I was actually trying to think of something nice so that I wouldn’t have to think about Jesse, the thought of him getting hurt was too much for me to bare so I just stared at the ground then tapped my foot.
‘Why aren’t you allowed out of the palace?’ Kayda asked.
‘Because there is this man who wants my family off the throne, he killed Geoffrey’s parents because my mother didn’t give them the throne. If I leave the palace there is a chance of me getting taken then killed,’ I explained. Kayda’s mouth dropped open and I watched the ground whilst trying to get the sound of Jesse shouting out of my head. ‘Can I go help Jesse please?’ I pleaded as I began walking closer to the door.
‘My mom might hurt you Charles,’ Kayda said nervously as she instantly stood up and dashed in front of the doorway.
‘I’ll be fine. I’ll go help Jesse then we’ll come back.’
‘I can’t let you do that. Jesse will shout at me for putting you in danger. He likes you ya know,’ Kayda said randomly.
‘I know, we’re friends,’ I answered as I nodded my head.
‘I mean as more then friends, he told me not to say anything so don’t tell him I told you.’ once again I was speechless. Jesse Daniel Taylor, the straightest guy in school, fancies me? I didn’t have any time to progress what Kayda has just told me because there was a banging on the door. Kayda stepped away from the door and then Jesse fell in. His hands were covered in blood. Automatically Kayda began looking for something. I took Jesse’s hand then helped him onto his mattress where I could then see the cut on his face which was causing all the bleeding. ‘Excuse me,’ Kayda said to me as she walked around me then knelt down with a facecloth then began wiping Jesse’s face like it was a normal progress to go through. Maybe in this house it was?
‘Don’t you need to phone an ambulance or something?’ I asked worriedly as I looked at Jesse who had blood trickling from his eyebrow and nose. Jesse shook his head but he didn’t take his eyes off of me. Kayda held the facecloth onto the cut on Jesse’s eyebrow and she handed him some tissue to hold on his nose. ‘I’ve got a band-aid in my bag,’ I told Jesse as I took my bag from my back then looked in the front pocket for the band-aids Geoffrey had packed for me.
‘I’m going to go fetch some more tissue from the bathroom, can you do this?’ Kayda requested as she stood up, threw the facecloth on the mattress and then took off for the bathroom. For a few seconds I just stood there with silence and Jesse was watching me. Then I remembered I had the band-aid in my hand.
‘Would you like me to put this on your eyebrow?’ I asked Jesse as I remember what Kayda had asked me to do. Jesse nodded his head gently as I knelt down to his level on the bloody floor. I picked up the facecloth then wiped the cut a final time. ‘Don’t move,’ I said calmly as I peeled part of the packaging of the band-aid away and then stuck it carefully onto Jesse’s eyebrow. I could see a smile forming on Jesse face which made me lean backwards a little. ‘What’s wrong?’ I asked confused. Before I had any time to react Jesse had his hands wrapped around my waist and he pulled me on top of him.
‘You’re leaving tomorrow so I won’t have the chance to do this again,’ Jesse muttered. I used my arms to stop myself from flattening an already broken Jesse. I raised my eyebrow at him still confused that was until Jesse pulled my face onto his. Our lips met and instantly I tried to make my mouth move in time with his. Being a Prince isn’t necessarily very good on the whole relationship status; I haven’t kissed anyone before. I shut my eyes and then I felt Jesse’s tongue enter my mouth, I wasn’t exactly sure what to do so I just froze.
‘I told you he liked you as more than just a friend.’ I quickly pulled away from Jesse startled then stood up and scurried to my bag. Kayda was stood at the door with a smug look on her face whilst holding tissue.
‘I better go, don’t worry about dropping me off. I’ll call Geoffrey then Callie will pick me up,’ I decided as I put my bag onto my back then began to walk to the door. ‘Bye Jesse.’
‘Charles wait. I’ll drop you off like I promised. Kayda get your stuff quickly,’ Jesse insisted. I didn’t even try to refuse his offer.
‘You’ve been quiet since you got home, what’s up?’ Callie asked as she flopped onto the bed beside me.
‘I’m just sad about leaving tomorrow,’ I lied as I looked at Callie with a warm smile.
‘Charles don’t think I believe that, you’ve lived with me for a month now. I know when you’re lying,’ Callie said. I wanted to shut myself away and hide.
‘It’s just Jesse’s house. It’s horrible,’ I said trying to make something else up. ‘I’ve just realised how good my life is,’ I continued. Callie nodded which meant she believed me, thank goodness. Then I thought back to the kiss Jesse and I shared. Jesse kissed me and I liked it.
