Chapter 23
Charles’ POV
‘Where am I?’ Jesse tiny voice whispered. I instantly sat up alert. What do I do? Am I dreaming? What’s going on?
‘Callie, fetch someone,’ I blurted out as I jumped up, still holding Jesse’s hand.
‘Eternity,’ Jesse whispered and I just stared at him. What does that mean? And then his eyes flew open. I could feel my eyes watering. Jesse’s eyes were blood shot; he stared at me a little and then began blinking repeatedly.
‘Hey Jesse, it is okay. I’m here,’ I whispered in reply.
Jesse’s POV
Who are you!? Who is Jesse? I blinked repeated. The bright light was getting constantly bigger. I could just see a dark outline of a figure. I wasn’t sure what the figure was, is it good or bad? Beep, beep. Beep, beep. I put my hands to my ears and the comforting warmth vanished. ‘Jesse, what’s wrong?’ I heard a friendly voice say, the outline was speaking to me. I pressed my eyes together and everything went quiet.
‘Eternity,’ I whispered quietly before opening my eyes again. Charles. The beeping began to quieten down and there was no longer a bright light, just Charles. I removed my hands from my ears and Charles instantly grabbed onto my hand before planting a kiss on my forehead.
‘Callie’s gone to get someone,’ Charles said quietly. His voice was shaky; he looked like he was going to cry. Who’s Callie? Then the room was flooded with people and Charles was forced away from me, everyone was wearing white with a small red cross in the top corner. The beeping came back and so did the bright lights. Eternity.
Charles’ POV
‘I can’t leave him, what’s going on?’ I asked as two doctors stood around Jesse’s bed. Jesse shut his eyes and then began shifting in his bed, like he was hurt.
‘You will just have to wait out her for a few minutes,’ a nurse began as she led me to a seat. ‘The doctors just need to take some tests.’ I nodded as I sat down.
‘Make sure they hurry up!’ I demanded as I tapped my feet nervously on the tiled floor. I could still see Jesse moving in his bed, the doctors looked like they were trying to calm him down. Chandler limped round the corner of the hall and over to me. I glanced up at him as he continued to come closer to me.
‘Jesse is gonna be fine,’ Chandler comforted. I just smiled at him as I continued to tap my feet on the floor.
‘You may go and see Jesse now, Prince,’ the nurse told me as she bowed before rushing off behind the doctors. I stood up then smiled at Callie and Chandler. ‘Can you come with me Chandler?’ I asked as I walked over to the door, then stopped straight beside it. I could hear Chandler standing up which was a good sign.
Jesse’s POV
I could see Charles walking back into my room; I couldn’t hide the smile which crept onto my face. All the beeping had stopped, and the whispers of my mother. Plus the bright lights had faded again, everything seemed real again. Charles was stopped just outside of my room, a boy walked up behind him. Wait, was he going to take my Charles away from me? The boy had dark brown hair, he was holding crutches and he had a slight limp. Who is he? And then the door opened. ‘Jesse, how are you feeling?’ Charles asked as he rushed over to me. His eyes were glowing their normal, beautiful colour.
‘I’m good,’ I said as loud as possible, it came out as a quiet whisper though. ‘Who’s that?’ I asked Charles nervously as I glanced at the smiling boy and then back at Charles. Charles’s smile dropped and he looked at me.
‘Are you messing with me Jesse, please, this isn’t funny,’ Charles begged as he slightly knelt, all his body weight was on his arms.
‘Messing about what?’ I asked as I looked back to the boy with the crutches nervously.
‘That’s my brother Chandler. You’ve known him for a while now, how can you not remember him?’ Charles’s voice went all panicky.
‘I’m sorry Charles but I don’t think I know him,’ I answered. Charles held my hand and kissed over it lightly. I felt my cheeks blush slightly. ‘Stop Charles, no one knows I’m gay yet,’ I whispered as I tried to remove my hand from Charles grip. ‘Anyway aren’t you supposed to be getting married?’ My voice croaked.
‘No Jesse, I’m not getting married. I love you,’ Charles said, his word caught me off guard.
I quickly tried to change the subject. ‘Where is Kayda?’ I asked as I tried to move my head in search of my little sister.
‘She’s with your dad.’
‘My mom you mean? I haven’t seen my dad in years, you know that Charles,’ I said as I looked across the room.
‘What do you remember Jesse?’ Charles asked me, his voice sounded serious now.
‘Remember about what?’ I asked, confused.
‘About the night, the night you go shot.’ My jaw dropped. I got shot? Did my mom do it?
‘I don’t remember getting shot, was it my mom again?’ I asked as I watched Charles’s hand caressing mine. Charles shook his head. ‘I thought you were leaving back to Driftwood?’
‘We’re in Driftwood,’ Charles replied simply as he stared into my eyes. I wanted to die, what the hell was going on? ‘You’ve been in a coma for over six weeks Jesse,’ Charles said. I looked at him then furrowed my eyebrows.
‘You’re messing with me,’ I said as I pulled my hand away from Charles’s then hit his shoulder.
‘I’d love it if I was. We got kidnapped, you got shot, you found your dad, you’re in Driftwood,’ Charles explained I looked at him like he was a madman.
‘My dad,’ I said in a quieter whisper. ‘Where is he?’
‘He will be here soon, he is fetching your sister,’ Charles mumbled. Charles looked upset, like he was in pain. His eyes were filled with tears and he just stared down.
Charles’ POV
Kenneth and Kayda were with Jesse so I was pacing through the hallway. Geoffrey was sat in front of me on one of the chairs. He was just sat there silently. ‘I thought we had a chance Geoffrey,’ I complained to Geoffrey as I bit my already gnawed of nails. ‘He doesn’t even remember Callie.’
‘I’m sure it’ll just take time Prince. Jesse is a strong boy, and he is a fighter.’ I stopped pacing and looked at Geoffrey for a few seconds before going back to just pacing. Callie had gone home with Chandler to inform the palace. I turned to face the glass window to Jesse room. Jesse was smiling as he spoke to his dad whilst Kayda sat on the foot of his bed.
‘Look, he is happy enough without me anyway,’ I snapped. Jesse turned to look at me and I gave him a half-hearted smile. He signalled for me to go to him but I shook my head. Jesse did the adorable puppy dog face that he always used to do. ‘No working,’ I mouthed through the window. Jesse continued to pull the face and I rolled my eyes before going into the room. Kenneth and Kayda looked at me.
‘Dad, Kay, can you give us a minute?’ Jesse asked his dad and sister. Kenneth nodded then walked out of the room. Kayda gave me a friendly smile and I returned it.
‘So, what did you want?’ I asked as I sat on the chair which Kenneth was once sat on.
‘I need to ask you something,’ Jesse said. I looked at him the raised my left eyebrow which made Jesse grin. ‘I love it when you do that.’ I couldn’t help but smile at him. Jesse put his hand out for me to take it so I did obediently.
‘Are you going to ask your question?’ I questioned as I looked at our touching hands, I felt the spark, like the first time I ever touched Jesse.
‘First, I need to ask something else; are you actually a Prince?’ Jesse asked with a smile. I nodded my head. Jesse smile widened. Even though his voice was still croaky he seemed a little more like Jesse. ‘Then why did you choose me?’
‘I don’t know, because I love you,’ I said, that sounded way cheesier then it was supposed to... Jesse let out a little chuckle. ‘There are lots of reasons, because you’re perfect, because I trust you, because you said you love me.’
‘I said that, wow I must have really been crazy.’ I looked at Jesse with wide eyes and then snatched my hand back. ‘I’m joking Charlie-boy, now give me back your hand. I don’t have the strength to move.’ I looked at Jesse and his adorable, pale, face.
‘Okay now hurry up and get to the point because you’re making me sound like some soppy, cheesy, four-year-old girl.’ I muttered.
‘Will you go out with me?’ Silence.
