Chapter 5
Jesse’s POV
I made my way from the cold shower to my bedroom in just a towel trying to avoid any man who would probably be exiting my mom’s bedroom.
‘Kayda get up,’ I barked as soon as I had shut the bedroom door. My 14-year-old sister was still sleeping on her mattress with a large plain duvet covering her petite body.
Almost instantly Kayda began shifting in her bed before arising and looking at me with sleepy eyes. ‘What time is it?’ Kayda grumbled as she rubbed her squinted eyes whilst trying to stop the light sending her blind.
I tossed my phone over to her so she could check the time herself as I looked around the small bedroom for my black slightly skinny jeans. When I saw them they were resting on top of a box which contained Kayda’s make up and products. I quickly picked them up along with my black boxers, and then began putting them on under the towel so Kayda wouldn’t get a flash of my arse.
‘Where is mom?’ Kayda questioned as she began pushing her duvet onto the dark, stained wooden floor.
‘With some creep from last night,’ I snickered. ‘Now hurry up and shower before her hooker wakes up and sees you, you never know what those men will do.’
‘If her hooker does anything to me I'll bitch slap him,’ Kayda laughed as she stood up before putting her light pink jacket on over her pale blue pyjamas before vanishing out the door whilst holding her underwear in her left hand.
I collapsed onto my bed before picking up Kayda’s mirror and looking at the cuts from Geoffrey, they were going pretty well to be honest. The cuts I'd made on Charles’s body had already gone; well at least I don’t have to see them when I go to his to do this stupid drama project.
‘Jesse Daniel Taylor!’ My mom’s voice beckoned down the small hallway from the lounge which was also her bedroom in our tiny apartment. I tried to blank out her voice but then she tripped through my bedroom door with some weird man stood behind her. He had a smirk plastered on his face and he kept raising his eyebrows at me. ‘Do fancy making me and this nice man a drink?’ My mom asked with a smile on her face.
‘No mom, no I don’t. Get your hooker to do it for you or do it yourself. I’m sure you know where the kitchen is and you have your huge stock of booze so piss of and do it yourself. If you can’t see I’m getting ready for school,’ I snarled as I pushed myself off the wall which I was leaning on then walked over to the two drunks stood in my door frame. I shoved my mom out of the way causing her to stumble into the arms of Mr Hooker. ‘If you touch my sister, I'll kill you,’ I snarled to the rather, dirty looking man as I shoved past the pair of them.
Once I'd got out of the view I made my way to the bathroom door, where on the other side Kayda was having a shower, and slouched in front of the it.
‘Do not speak to me like that Jesse. I’m your mother!’ my mom screamed into my face as she crouched to my level; the fact she'd made it over to me without falling was quite surprising.
‘Unfortunately,’ I muttered under my breath as I tried to block her beer breath away from me.
'How dare you?' she hissed. Before I had any time to react I felt a sharp stinging pain in the side of my face. I just shrugged it off, trying not to let the burning sensation effect me, and then looked at her. My mom’s red eyes glared at me.
‘Is that all you’ve got?’ I asked with a slight sound of annoyance. And then the pain actually hit me as my mom’s sharp, red fingernails went straight into my cheek before pulling down. I could feel my skin ripping away and then blood fell down my cheek onto the already stained carpet.
Mr. Hooker was still stood behind my mom with a smirk on his smug, yet so punchable, face and then he headed to the kitchen whilst rubbing his hands through his hair.
‘Now make me a drink Jesse or else you’ll regret it when we have Kayda,’ my mom stuttered.
‘You touch Kayda and I’ll have to kill you as well,’ I threatened as I shoved her lightly.
Kayda was dabbing a wet facecloth on the cut which was still bleeding on my cheek as she tried to tuck her white top into her high-waisted blue shorts. ‘I have to meet someone this morning,’ Kayda began as she dropped onto my mattress as I hugged my light gray vest top to my chest.
‘Who are you meeting?’ I asked as I tried to look in the mirror at my face without moving too much.
‘Just this guy,’ Kayda mumbled.
‘Does Kayda have a crush?’ I teased as I poked Kayda’s skinny stomach.
‘No I don’t, he’s in your year.’
‘Who is he?’ I asked concerned; why was my little sister meeting some boy from my year?
‘Davis Jackson,’ Kayda muttered; I recognised the name but I couldn't put a face to it. 'I have to walk with him; he knows our mom and he isn't afraid to tell people about her,’ she explained to me. Everyone at school knew that Kayda and I weren't exactly millionaires yet they didn't actually know how serious the condition is.
I turned to Kayda as if to say "what the heck". ‘He's not going to say a word about mom, and you're not walking with him,’ I declared as I looked at Kayda the same way mom had been looking at me. ‘He won't do anything and you're going to have to stop speaking to him,’ I continued to lecture.
‘How are you going to stop him?’ Kayda asked.
‘I’ll break his face, that’s how I’ll stop him,’ I hissed; my temper has never really been something that I can easily control.
‘Please don’t Jess, just tell him not to. I’m sure he’ll stop,’ Kayda pleaded. I just rolled my eyes then pushed her hand away from my face before pulling my top on.
-
Driving my truck, I turned down the street which Kayda was supposedly meeting Davis Jackson on. Kayda was sat next to me tapping her feet on the dash board like she does when she’s nervous.
‘It’s him there,’ she pointed out as she sat up straight then pounded her fist on her lap. I quickly stopped the car at the side of the road then slid from my seat.
‘Davis Jackson?’ I called as I looked towards the guy which Kayda has said was him. The boy turned around and I saw his face looking confused; he didn't look like the type of guy who would be blackmailing people but you can never judge a book by it's cover.
‘Yeah?’ the boy asked, still confusion rung in his voice.
‘You've been saying stuff to my sister haven't you? Kayda Taylor,’ I spat, saying her name to "refresh" his memory. As I walked up to him my fist clenched and my body tensed.
‘No,’ Davis denied quicky, a little too quickly. 'I haven't done anything,' he continued to deny.
‘Lies,’ I boomed as I smacked my fist straight into his cheek bone. A strange crack sound was made and I instantly knew his bone was broke; I didn't even want to the think about the consequences I'm probably going to be facing later.
Davis cupped his hand over his cheek. ‘I haven't even done anything, I don't even know Kayda,’ Davis sniffed as he backed away from me.
I raised my fist as if I was going to hit him again and the scared boy tripped backwards; I done enough and it was now my cue to leave.
Turning around to go back to my car, I noticed Geoffrey and Charles coming up to me without their sidekick, Callie. Charles was doing a steady jog and Geoffrey walked quickly behind him whilst adjusting his rucksack.
‘What are you doing?’ Charles asked as he pulled my shoulder back.
‘None of your business,’ I growled as I shook my shoulder from Charles’s hand.
‘Jesse leave the guy alone, give him a break. What’s he done to get you like this anyway?’ Geoffrey asked as he stood behind Charles.
‘Like I said before, none of your god damned business,’ I spat as I walked back to the truck were Kayda was looking at me. ‘What?’ I asked grumpily. Kayda just rolled her eyes then crossed her legs in the passenger’s seat before I started up the truck and headed to school.
-
As soon as we arrived at school I waved to Kayda as she ran over to her little girl group and began speaking to her friends. I made my way over to Ashley who was stood at the side of the school next to Louisa whilst they were both smoking.
‘Look babe, I don’t think it’s working between us,’ I mumbled casually as I took the cigarette away from Ashley and took a large drag.
‘What are you on about Jesse?’ Louisa asked as she stubbed her cigarette out on the wall then looked at me with her dark blue, beady eyes.
‘I’m on about, I don’t want to date you anymore,’ I said stubbornly as I took one of my own cigarettes from the first pocket of my bag. ‘You’re not my type, you never were.’
‘Jesse...’ Ashley said softly. I put my hand in front of his face.
‘You’re just going to break up with me...again?’ Louisa questioned as she put her hands on her hips then pouted her light pink, made up lips.
‘Pretty much,’ I said whilst nodding my head. ‘Now piss of from round here, go stand with the wanna-be’s.’ Louisa looked at me with an evil glare before stomping off. Her heels clomped loudly on the floor as her hay-like hair blew in the wind.
‘That was harsh,’ Ashley muttered as he threw the stub of his cigarette onto the floor then looked at me with wide eyes.
‘I don’t care, her makeup is harsh.’ I admitted plainly. After the events of the morning I was in no mood to be kind to other people's feelings.
‘You really need to think about what you’re doing Jesse, eventually you’ll have no one left and you’ll turn into that weird kid, Dick-Loving Danny.’
‘Who the hell is that?’ I asked confused as I scrunched my face up with disgust.
‘Exactly. He use to be you, well like you. He was the most popular guy in the school, every week he’d have a new bird. That was until he admitted that he had gotten bored of girls and he decided to swap to guys. He was then forced to leave the school due to loads of threat notes from other guys. Trust me I know, I use to be his best friend before that happened,’ Ashley began to explain.
‘I’m never gonna be one of them gross homos. I like girls and only girls, do you understand?’ I grunted. Ashley looked at me before walking away. Me gay? Hell no.
After break I had two lessons of gym; I’ve always been pretty good at sport.
Callie and Charles are both in my gym class which makes thing 10 times worse.
I changed into my black Nike shorts and a white polo shirt before putting my red converse back onto my feet. I then began walking to the field where Mr Harold was waiting for us.
Callie was sat in the centre of the field picking grass whilst Charles was sat besides her hugging his knees. ‘Taylor!’ Mr Harold shouted to me.
‘Yes Sir,’ I answered as I jogged up to him.
‘You and Charles need to go get some equipment from the sport room,’ I wanted to shoot myself in the face then and there. Okay, if I don’t like someone I end up doing everything with them, if it’s someone I love then I get pushed as far away as possible. ‘Arnold, get over here!’ Mr Harold shouted to Charles.
Charles stood up whilst fiddling with the strings on his gym shorts. ‘Go with Taylor here to go fetch some equipment. I want all the footballs and cones. Go now you’ve got ten minutes, I’ll be counting. If any of you fight or anything both of you will be stuck with two weeks of detention. Do you understand?’ Mr Harold shouted. Charles and I nodded obediently before beginning to walk with like a two meter gap in between us both.
‘So how are you getting to Callie’s tonight?’ Charles asked me finally starting conversation after like five minutes of silence. He was struggling to hold a bag of footballs whilst I played with some cones.
‘I’ll walk. My mom needs the truck so I guess walking will be easier. I might have to head off at like seven though because I need to meet my sister.’
‘You have a sister? How old is she?’ Charles asked.
’Fourteen, what about you? Do you have any brothers or sisters?’ I asked completely un-interested in our conversation.
‘I had two brothers and two sisters,’ Charles said. I nodded pretending I actually cared.
‘Cool,’ I muttered quietly as I dropped a cone on the floor then quickly picked it back up. ‘So you aren’t from round here are you? Where’d you actually come from? Europe?’ I asked. Charles had an ascent, I sounded a little like a cross between English and South African.
‘I’m from a small Island called Driftwood. It’s in between Australia and Madagascar,’ Charles said simply.
‘Why are you here then?’ I questioned.
‘Because I wanted to come visit Callie. It’s boring staying in the same place all the time. Repeating the same duties over and over again.’
‘What do you mean by duties? Is your family like majorly important?’ I heard Charles murmur something under his breath but I didn’t quite get it.
‘I mean that I had to do lots of things, you know go to school every day. Our school hours are different to yours though. It’s starts at 10 in the morning and ends at four in the afternoon. Also I have to go to lots of boring places. You see my family is very boring to be honest,’ Charles began.
I just nodded again as we reached the field again.
-
Once school had finished I dropped Kayda at her friend’s house then took the truck home before heading to Callie’s house.
Knocking on the door then I heard some feet scampering towards the it. ‘Prince I’ll get it!’ I heard someone shout. Who the heck is Prince? Is it like a nickname or something?
The door open and Geoffrey was stood in the door frame wearing some black suit trousers and a white shirt. Why the hell was he dressed like that again? ‘You’re here,’ Geoffrey muttered as he looked me up and down before allowing me to enter the house. ‘You smell disgusting,’ Geoffrey stated rudely.
‘Shut up,’ I spat I headed for the stairs. Geoffrey followed at my ankles. I walked over to Callie’s room and was about to open the door when Geoffrey began to speak.
‘They’re not in there. They’re in the guest room.’ I turned from the door then looked at the door which Geoffrey was stood in front of. Geoffrey twisted the handle of the door. ‘Charles, Jesse is here. May he come in?’ Geoffrey asked in a formal voice.
‘Yeah he can come in. Why are you acting like that?’ I heard Charles voice which made me grin. ‘Change out the stupid suit then come in here and help us do this,’ Charles instructed as I walked into the guest bedroom where Charles was holding lots of different clothes.
‘Am I getting in the way of something?’ I asked as I walked further into the room allowing Geoffrey to close the door.
‘Don’t worry about it, Callie and I was just choosing some clothes for me to where when I go home. It’s always been a big deal with my family to look nice when getting home. A Driftwood tradition.’ Charles said with a smile. ‘Anyway I’ll be back in a bit, I just have to go speak to Geoff,’ Charles told me as he vanished from the room leaving me alone.
I quickly walked over to the laptop which was set up on a desk and clicked onto the internet. I tapped “Driftwood” into the keyboard then pressed search.
A page came up so I clicked onto it then began scrolling through the pictures. They were all of places that looked like things you’d only see in Heaven. On every single picture there was bright green grass and the roads were paved with perfect pebble. All the buildings were painted white and there was neatly cut shrubs outlining most of the grass areas.
Then the information came to screen. “The small Island of Driftwood, ruled by Queen Annette Elizabeth Jane Karen Arnold and King Edward Ronaldo Arnold. The Island was found 67 years ago by two survivours of a plane crash; those survivors were Lady Jessica Breem and Lord Ashton Breem, the parents of Queen Annette. The royal family have four children that go by the names of Prince Chandler...”
‘What are you doing?’ Callie asked which startled me causing me to jump up from the bed.
‘I was just looking up Driftwood, Charles was telling me he lived there and that I wouldn’t know the place. It seems like a pretty awesome place,’ I stuttered as I walked backwards as Callie sat on the bed then pulled the laptop onto her lap.
‘And what did you find out about Driftwood?’ Callie asked me as she raised both her eyebrows causing her forehead to wrinkle.
‘That it’s run by a King and Queen called something Arnold. And that it looks nice. It doesn’t even look real,’ I said as I watched Callie click things on the laptop.
We had been writing up a script for over an hour and so far we had gotten two lines. ‘I don’t even know what the plays going to be about!’ Charles yelled in frustration as he slid of the bed onto the floor. ‘Geoffrey can you write my lines?’ Charles asked casually as he smiled at Geoffrey.
‘I’ll do some of them but you have to do a majority,’ Geoffrey said casually. What the heck? If that was me I’d be doing no one’s homework.
‘No Charles if us lot are doing our work you can do yours as well,’ I chipped in as I took the pen from Callie then chewed the top whilst I looked at the sheet of paper with two line written for Callie and Geoffrey to say. ‘Now tell me what this is actually about so I can write something.’
‘Miss Lincon said that we need to write a romantic play. If we start it off at a school and then a new person joins so then Callie can be caught in between the boys and then they’ll be a massive argument. In the end Callie can go off with a guy that had nothing to do with the love triangle?’ Geoff suggested.
‘What and then we can make the left over guys become gay together and then everyone lives happily ever after?’ Callie put in as she laughed to herself.
‘We aren’t having any dykes in this play,’ I spat as I looked at Callie who was still smiling at her comment.
‘Seen as you’ve just said that, you can be one of the gay people,’ Callie decided as she looked at me then took the pen from my hand then scribbled all the writing from the paper and began writing a cast. “Callie – the girl of the love triangle, Geoffrey – the guy who just ends up appearing, Jesse – a guy in the love triangle who then falls for another guy, Charles – the guy who Jesse falls for.”
‘Cross that out Callie!’ I demanded as I tried to take the pen off her.
‘Not happening. We have an idea now Geoffrey so let’s begin writing our script. Jesse you piss off with Charles and make sweet love so we can put some little romantic bits in our play without you or him stopping us,’ Callie laughed as she eyed Charles who was completely oblivious to what we were speaking about as he pulled shaggy bits of the rug and then twisted them in his fingers.
I looked at Callie with a sad look, ‘please don’t make me gay. Let Geoffrey be gay with Charles if anyone because I just don’t fit that part.’ Callie just burst out into even louder laughter which made Charles sit up in alert.
‘Have you written anything else?’ Charles asked, well he obviously wasn’t listening. Charles snatched the script from Callie then looked at it before screwing up his face. ‘I am not being a homosexual, especially not with Jesse,’ Charles muttered as he looked at Callie, his blue eyes sparkled with the light; he pulled himself onto the bed using the covers for support.
‘Well think of something you want to put in the play so we can change your part. Why can’t we have gay people though?’ Geoffrey asked as he looked at Charles and I whilst smirking.
‘Because firstly, gay with Jesse?’ Charles complained. ‘If it was someone good looking then maybe, but Jesse? Seriously?’ Charles whined. Wait does this mean that Charles is gay?
‘Dude, are you gay or something?’ I asked Charles as I stood up from the bed and looked at Charles who just shrugged. What the Hell? 'Anyway I need to go pick Kayda up,’ I stuttered as I looked at my wrist pretending I had a watch.
'But the play!' Callie yelled at me.
‘Think of something...just, make sure I’m not being gay in it though,’ I insisted whilst backing away to the door. The top of my thigh hit the desk causing me to curse allowed.
‘Charles is really gay? No flippin’ way,’ I whispered to myself as I rushed down the stairs still rubbing my thigh.

Hey, it's Alex again!
If you are still here and you didn't ditch because of how much of a fail this chapter was then thanks!
I honestly didn't know what to write because I had writers block but I said I'd try to write once a week.
Pretty much in this chapter I just wanted to put some things out there about Jesse, also I wanted to speed some things up because if not then this beginning story part will be going of for years.
Okay now that's out there, hope you enjoyed it. Even though I'm not particularly proud of this chapter I still thought I should at least post something.
Please don't hate me :) Anyway vote, fan whatever?
-ALEX!
It's like the 19/08/2014 and I'm (T) editing this; this chapter's like so cringey. What the heck is "Dick-Loving Danny?" Yay for improvement! :D
