Sometimes when you're little, you get lonely because all the other kids think you're too small and skinny to be their friend.

Stiles was very tiny for his age so the other kids picked on him. The older kids especially. Stiles had no friends and it made his mom sad and since his mom was sick, Stiles started lying about having friends so that his mom would be happy. Stiles knew that his mom knew he was lying, but it made her smile so it was okay. He would tell her stories of his adventures with his friends and how he killed the dragon to save the princess but the princess was mean so he went to the magician to make the dragon come back to life and be his friend. His mom smiled at his stories and sometimes she would even fall asleep listening to them.

While Stiles was happy about making his mom smile, the older kids were still bullying him which made Stiles cry sometimes. Like when Justin pushed him down the stairs and Stiles hurt his knee really bad but he couldn't tell the teacher. Or like when he was on top of the monkey bars and Adam pushed him off the bars and made Stiles twist his ankle so bad he had to walk in crutches for a whole week (though most of his time was spent looking for his crutches because the big kids hid them).

One day, Stiles was very anxious because he would see him mom after school and he couldn't wait but at the same time, he didn't want to see his mom so sick and weak and tiny. Justin and Adam ganged up on him on that day and they kicked him and punched him until he started coughing blood. Stiles could hear a voice asking if he was alright over and over and telling him to stay awake. Then, he felt hands not much bigger than his own (but still pretty big sort of) lift him up and carry him away, towards the nurse office.

Later that week, Stiles learned that it was Derek Hale who had carried him and who had told on Justin and Adam and their friends.

When Stiles went back to school, Derek was waiting for him at the gate and told him to keep close. Derek stayed with Stiles whenever he could. They had the same lunch and most of their classes were next to each other so Derek was always next to Stiles to protect him.

Stiles told his mom about his new friend and his mom smiled and Stiles was very happy when Derek's mom said Derek could go to the hospital with Stiles after school. When Stiles mother met Derek, she told him a secret which made Stiles frown and Derek smile brightly at her. Derek's smile was so bright that Stiles couldn't help but smile with him and the jealousy of his mom telling Derek the secret was soon forgotten.

Derek's mom had agreed to drive them home from the hospital but Stiles got tired when he waiting for her with Derek so Derek took him on his back. Which is the position in which Derek's mom found them a few minutes later- Derek standing very straight and strong with a very tired Stiles slumped on his back.

Stiles mom died soon after. Stiles stayed with Derek all night and he cried. Derek's family made him pancakes in the morning and he ended up staying with them for an entire week while Stiles' dad was taking care of the funeral and everything.

At his mom's funeral, Stiles was very glad he had a friend like Derek and Derek was very glad he had a friend like Stiles. The two boys stayed together most of the time after that. Stiles went to Derek's house until his father came to pick him up later on in the day or vice versa. The two families became very close and on Stiles' first christmas without his mom, the Hales invited him and his father- Sheriff Stilinski- to their christmas dinner with the whole family.

The Hales were such a big family that the Stilinskis were overwhelmed very fast. They both became accustomed quickly enough, however, and had a great time with the Hale family. In addition, Derek was always next to Stiles and made sure he always had a chance to talk and participate in the games. Derek's sister said something about Derek having a really cute boyfriend which made Derek blush and Stiles frown a bit. Derek's sisters and his cousins awed at the sight and the older ones giggled.

Stiles, at one point, decided that it was okay that his mom had died and that, when he felt that it wasn't okay, he could always ask to stay with Derek.

Eventually, Stiles started feeling  better about the death of his mother and Derek and him became closer than ever.
